Huge fan of this synth! The interface and design are beautiful, and the tones are gorgeous. The exchange between the player and synth are like a conversation! I want one!
There's much to appreciate here aesthetically. The panel design is the obvious thing. But the insistence on a moon-based inspiration is a fresh choice. In general, the lightness is appreciable. Thank you for using that tone of purple. Not enough things swing to this aesthetically light of a theme. I could keep going but thank you for making these design choices. I am curious to see what you come up with next, visually and aurally.
This is my perfect synth. All of the things i've wanted, but all in one small package instead of lots of bits of gear cobbled together. Cannot wait to get this!
I've been waiting for something like this for so long, a kind of mini groovebox designed for generative patches. Will be waiting for this very eagerly! All I'd say since this hasn't been released yet, I know it seems small but at least for me its not, PLEASE change that micro-usb to usb-c. Again, I know it seems like a minor thing, but I've had nothing but bad experiences with micro-b, and its not worth the hassle when we have something thats not only better but more widely used.
Seems more pattern focused than timber/noise focused, though it does have some of both, which is interesting. I think I like where this is going better than the MakeNoise approach to such stand-alone boxes. The Pluto here makes sense to me and isn't pretentiously trying to be "mysterious," which is a big plus in my book. There's plenty of "discovery" to be had working with things when you know how they work, if those things are well designed. I don't want to have to discover what something does, I want to discover what I can *do* with what it does, and this has a nice clean design for that.
Great stuff, good to see a truly innovative instrument! I expect this to be popular :) Two suggestions: 1) Draw lines to divide the three main sections on the front panel for clearer use 2) A simple decay envelope for the voices if you can squeeze it in... A sequencer-only version would be a great spin-off too
The amp section is based around low pass gates, so AD envelopes aren't as relevant. Could be a nice thing, but you could always patch up to a bigger system with an ADSR.
Looks and sounds wonderful. Great demonstration; the last five minutes really got my attention. I was about to purchase the 0 Coast; but that’s now on hold. I’m waiting for the price and availability of the Pluto; I suspect I won’t be disappointed.
@@abrokenrobot that’s an empty statement. Every synth is “good” for someone and the cost (perception of price) is relative to what is in the market. When you know that a Folktek Mescaline was $450 in the Indiegogo campaign, that a Lorre-Mill Double Knot V.1 was $450 new, that a Make Noise 0-Coast is $499, but easy to find at $450, or that a Hikari Monos is $270, you necessarily have to conclude that this is too expensive. All of those have analog oscillators, filters, envelopes, and/or LFOs. This is completely digital! A Raspberry Pi or a Teensy board are around $40. The entire set of components for this cannot go beyond $150 (exaggerating!) individually priced. Now, would people think that is justified to pay $450 for this? Many people will. It is a nice synth! Synths are luxury goods, so they can cost a lot more than the labor & components or the use-value just because people think they are “classic” or “unique.” I would not pay $450 for this one, but I’ve paid a lot more for other synths because of those reasons. It is not difficult for us, synth geeks, to fetishize noise making machines.
@@abrokenrobot I would say if they are a desktop modular synth, then yea they try to go an affordable route cause you figure it’s a “all in one.” If we talking Euro rack den yea you right obv.
Saw the pricepoint today, and I have questions, most of which are "why?" I was on-board until a few hours ago. I really like this. I sincerely hope that subsequent videos will change my mind.
@@modernsounds2767 cool. I’m of course up for this and that other project. I started my DIY adventures with the amazing Gecholoop synth and was able to solder a tiny microchip on the board (I mean, no through-hole). When the thing started making sounds I found the feat twice as gratifying as exploring/experiencing the sounds only.
I'm not even into modular but since it's battery powered and so tiny i might just get one to play around with while on the beach... plug it into my field recorder, i'm sold.
Damn, this thing is incredible! If you can manage to get this out for less than Teenage Engineering prices I bet you could sell more of 'em than you could make!
The only thing I have to criticise is the usb micro port. Please use USB-C, it’s easier to plug in blindly, everyone has cables by now and it’s more robust! Apart from that, it’s an awesome little synth, great job on the design, both UI and Audio!
What I'd be dearly missing is a SD-Card to record all those happy accidents. This looks like a super fun device to muck about on the go! (Especially as it is very diffrent to the tracker thing.) But having to carry an extra recording device would make using it in transit a bit of a chore. On top of that there is only one audio out and no audio over USB, so you'd have to carry a splitter as well.
No diy option planned, but you’re not the first one to ask, so if there’s lots of interest then I might consider some kind of diy option. Subscribe to my email to get updates on availability and price. buttondown.email/modernsounds?tag=youtube
Super nice. Sadly the camera frame rate and the led rate don't match well when you film it, but the explanation about the Moons was still clear enough.
If you're not too far into developing this I would love if you can have each voice be split between the output, one hard left and the other hard right on a stereo output jack. I think this would be so nice for post-processing options.
Are the modulation outputs pulses or sines? From the pulse width control, I’d guess pulses, but there’s a lot of gradual movement going on in the patch. Or is that the lpg slew limiting the output?
He said they were pulses with a width control, but I also wondered why i wasnt hearing hard steps with the waveform knob being modulated/ how to trim the pulses without vcas?
Very cool. For some reason, this reminds me of a double sequencer I saw that was somehow influenced or inspired by Blasser. Anyone remember what that thing was called?
Perhaps the Lorre-Mill Double Knot. But that one was analog with banana jacks (and better sounding IMO). This is a great digital version of that type of “Buchlaesque” synths but, of course, less unpredictable and “cleaner” sounding.
@@MisterNiles yes, the Pluto is a lot more straightforward. The Double Knot is a rather “esoteric” synth for a niche “artsy” segment. There is a middle-of-the-road option: the Liquid Foam by Herbs & Stones. Like the DN, it uses banana cables and is analog, but it has a more standard filter and an LFO tied to one of the sequencers so that it is controllable enough. I guess it is more expensive than the Pluto (the Pluto is supposed to sell for $450, the Liquid Foam is around $500) but worth it IMO, since it its analog... although the original DN was $450 (not too bad for that kind of synth).
I like this style and the design is clean. Are the voltages eurorack compatible? I could see patching the CV to my volca modular and having them sync and trigger each other. I have been kinda wishing there was something semi-modular that had some stuff similar to mutable modules like plaits so the wave table could be interesting.
Genuinely the first synth I've been excited for prior to release

I fall in love with anything remotely buchla-esque, so, I love this.
Thank you. The Music Easel was a major inspiration for Pluto’s design.
Wow, beautiful clarity in the visual design of this! would be a joy to play with.
Got my Pluto today from Perfect Circuit after wanting one for 2+ years. What a lovely, inspiring little box. Thanks for sharing with the world!

really creative interaction and beautiful design. I love you you simplified a voice down to one knob and two jacks

I'm calling it now.....this one's going to be an instant cult classic!!!! Watch out Teenage Engineering.

Why? Will it cost 3 times as much as it's worth?
Ok.

Rightt.. in this economy 😅😂
It will be, it seems. $450 is the expected price. A bit too much for me for a small digital synth.
Modular synths aren’t ever really both cheap and good
