- For one reason or another, sometimes UFC divisions completely get thrown out of whack, because the champions left the weight class, refused to fight the challengers or at other times, even left the UFC altogether. These are the champions that held up divisions.

Interim belts are ridiculous on the surface. Either the champ is going to be out long enough to vacate, or you just call the top contender the top contender. Interims have never been anything more than top contender fights with a make believe belt attached.
@@markzuckergecko621the difference between an interim champion and a title eliminator is that the latter can be promoted to champion if the actual champion is out for that long (like Aldo, Arlovski, Barao, Whittaker, and maybe someone else)
That is literally the only reason for having an interim championship.

Its hard to get behind Jones who got an immediate title shot with zero HW fights, then waited for Stipe for "legacy" only to not fight or relinquish the belt...all the while you see guys like Jiri and Jamahal get hurt, vacate, and come back quicker than Jones will. Its honestly really shitty to the fans but even shittier for Aspinall

I feel like the Figgy/Moreno fights stalled up the Flyweight Division for a time too. About two years at least
Some of the rematches were unwarranted but the ufc REALLY wanted figgy as champ

Jones literally seems less chaotic when he's bullying a whole division and fans. The dude had one of the craziest comebacks ever still found a way to squander the good faith.
I can't believe I am about to defend Jones... but what does good faith do for him? I mean, honestly, he is one of the most hated fighters of all time. For many good reasons. Yeah, he got some good press after the Gane win but with his legacy I don't blame him for feeling like he doesn't have much left to prove. If I had the leverage to hold out for a big pay day for a relatively easy fight, I would do it too. Not saying I like it, but his behavior is indeed what is best for him, and I can't really fault him for being selfish in such a brutal sport and industry, especially at his age.
The fact that he has less money isnt on the UFC but on his inactivity and suspensions which are his fault so Jon Jones only has himself to blame and needs to shut up and just fight.

Jones is less chaotic when he is "fighting" (in the media for fighting, even tho he doesn't fight many people anymore). The instant that attention and limelight is off of him, he is going right back into being a wife beating, coke snorting, cop's worst nightmare POS that he is

Any Russian champ holds up the division because they can't compete for a third of the year because of Ramadan and other religious practices. Nothing against the religion but just saying it plays a role

It’s crazy how much the lightweight division has been stalled. It seems like it’s spent more time stalled than not considering how it first started and then the examples they mentioned
I think it's a giant missed opportunity to bring up Mousasi and not use the Tommy Toe Hold impression of him!
There should be a set amount of time during which, regardless of circumstance injury or otherwise, the titles must be defended or they are lost.
They do that in boxing. No matter how popular the champ, you either defend in a timely manner, or you get stripped.

You forgot the two years without a W135 title defence between 245 and 269. People try and frame Nunes as a good thing when the division’s fall in relevance was on her watch. Even if you don’t directly blame her she’s the Tim Sylvia esque figurehead on top.
The one thing you can say with Rocky as champion is the field is massively open, and that can only be a positive.

The fact that 8/10 of these happened within the last 10 years is demonstrative of how much the power is tilted towards Dana more recently. None of this happens in other major sports.
Other promotions have it set up to where it can't get too political. Tournaments and seasons help with that. In the ufc, either you play ball with Dana or don't play at all

12:06 The vital piece of information missed is that all of the shambles with promoting Aldo to champ again only happened because Rumble pulled out of the fight with DC that was meant to be the main event for UFC 206. That meant Max and Pettis had to pushed to the main event. So Dana decided to make it for the interim belt since he hates main events with not title on the lline, therefore promoting current interim champ (Aldo) to champ, and stripping Conor.
Jones stalling another division while Omalley keeps sandbagging at 135… I see UFC hasn’t changed since I’ve stepped away. Good, it sucks to support their exploitation of athletes.
The ufc trying to exploit fighters and fighters are trying to exploit their place in the rankings, whether it be champ or just ranked. Some fighters are awesome, but it's mostly a political mess
All this mess could all be avoided if they just got rid of interim titles. If the champ is injured and or simply unable to defend their title then they should just be striped.
If they want to keep the interim belt they could do a 6 months min for interim belt and 1 and a half years for the title to be stripped, it's not ideal but it's a bit weird
First of all, Grasso v shevchenko 2 never should have happened.
Secondly while the judge scores were fucking messed up Grasso should have a win on her record for the second by unanimous decision

There’s not enough fighters anymore who are game to fight anyone at anytime. All the champs today are holding out for double champ status or easy wins. People like Holland, Thompson, Gaethje and Dober are keeping the lights on by going out there and putting on a show regardless of the outcome
Those are cool names but they aren't champs. Contenders and ranked fighters shouldn't have to carry their division and be the main reason to watch because their champs are busy with easy fights, taking a long break, or going for double champ. Feel bad for good contenders in lame divisions

Jones could have fought stipe in 2017. Both were champs and on winning streaks but stipe was literally one punching people. Had to wait until stipe is in a retirement to randomly beg for the fight

Ngannou defended his title against Gane in 2022. I know this for a fact because I lost so much money (to me at least) betting on Stipe in the rematch and I was waiting for a trilogy bout between them for almost a year.
That ngannou ko essential retired stipe until ngannou left. Then stipe came out of hiding

GSP is an all time great no doubt but it's so disappointing the best middleweight roster we ever had was frozen just because George knew Mike had one eye. He signed a multi fight deal with his fingers crossed with zero intentions to defend the belt because no other MW had one eye.

3 was close? Reyes was more accurate landed 7 more sig strikes and 7 more overall, stuffed both takedown attemps. Both fighters landed 7 headstrikes however reyes landed 13 body strikes to 5. The only way you can score that round in jons favour is because he landed 1 more leg kick than reyes… 14 media outlets to 7 scored it for reyes and every mma fighrer and pundit scored it for reyes. You have to be blatantly biased to say jon won

The way the udc just closed an entire division for inactivity is crazy, considering how many times that stuff happened in the new era, funny thing since lightweight will go on to be the most important and most stacked division in the sport history
Imagine if it stayed closed forever? All the superstars the ufc had wouls never have emerged, and mma would never reach any popularity among casual fans, since they wouldn't be doing those crazy numbers they did

Let’s not forget that FRANCIS was recovering from knee surgery and couldn’t fight! It’s not as if he was healthy after completing his contract. That part of the story needs to be highlighted as a contributing factor into him not fighting!

Jon Jones is the reason why the light heavyweight and now heavyweight division sucks. No one takes those division champs seriously because as long as Jones is lingering around, many fans don't feel like those champs are really the best in their division. When Jones goes away, it'll allow those divisions to grow.

Draws are OK, they beat bad decisions. Anytime we got a draw, the rematch was decisive
