- On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Alan Gilbert conducts Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, which was on the programme at the first concert of the newly founded Symphony Orchestra of the North West German Radio in 1945. Because of the corona pandemic the concert was held without on-site audience.

Magnificent performance by Gilbert and the orchesta! I also have to mention what a mighty sound the timpani had. Very full and majestic!
Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser romantischen und perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente. Der dritte Satz klingt besonders schön und echt elegant. Der intelligente und geniale Maestro dirigiert das perfekt trainierte Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Wahrlich hörenswert!

An absolutely fine performance, Mr Gilbert, perhaps the finest I've heard of this symphony. You've got a talented orchestra with very fine musicians, thank you. I like to thank especially the french horn player for her impact at the beginning of 2nd mvt. I can imagine Pjotr Iljitsh lurking over the banks of Neva river with a happy face (and sad at times). Marvellous!

it is frustrating to me that many who lead the NYPhilharmonic don't do well there but have great careers before and after as Gilbert seems to having with the NDR.

This is an absurd distancing of the brass from the rest of the orchestra..also the distance between players..as conductor, I would've never accepted this.
Well, that was due to the pandemic of course. 🤷
Useless finale with a lot of rhetoric, many unwritten tempo changings
