I was in Bangkok and head a hard time speaking to the locals. I hopped into a taxi once, pointed to where I wanted to go. The ride was quiet and I wanted to know about his day and life in thailand, so I asked if he spoke English, he shook his head, "no." Then I asked him in Lao, "could you speak Lao?" He looked at me and smiled replied in Lao, "yes! I could speak laotian, I'm from Issan!" Bam, that car ride got interesting as I was trying my best to remember my own language and speak to him, but he completely understood me or the context of it and helped me find the right word. At the end he thanked me for him meeting a Lao person in Thailand, and making his day a bit more enjoyable with oth our broken conversation. 😅 miss ya taxi driver in bangkok!
That sounds interesting indeed! I am glad you had a memorable trip.
wow I had this same experience in Bangkok LOL! (I am Lao-American)
I'm trying to learn Isaan so I can impress my family from Thailand next time they visit. I said e-yang last monday to my sister and the elders heard and were shocked I knew a word in isaan.
Don’t no if you no the word for delicious in Isaan, it’s sep lai in case you didn’t no
It’s kind of basically just lao
Dear K. Mod and K. Pear This is an excellent video. I have been learning central Thai for about 13 years now: I read and write in Thai and have learnt with a number of Thai teachers - both good and bad. I have also done a degree in Thai. What is really helpful about this video is that you explain the differences between Thai and Isan in English and then demonstrate slowly. You also have the captions below in Thai script which makes it really helpful to follow. In addition, you explain some of the simple substitutions that occur between the languages - for example, รัก and อัก.I will be watching this video again and following some of your other UA-cam clips. Thanks you againDavid (Mhoo Whan)คุณหมูหวาน ฝรั่งหัวใจไทย ร้องเพลงลูกทุ่งหมอลำ ทำอาหารไทย
สวัสดีค่ะคุณหมูหวาน ขอบคุณมากค่ะสำหรับคอมเมนต์ มดกับแพรดีใจที่คุณหมูหวานชอบบทเรียนนี้ค่ะ :)

It’s awesome Thailand has many dialects...my family is from Issan and they all learn central Thai language and are fluent in Lao/Issan language and speak fluent central. So growing up my parents spoke Issan/Lao to me...but I’ve learned a little central as well...and I now live in Canada and speak English and French...so many languages in my family... many Laos people in Canada as well...some Thai. But we are all relatives. I love all of Thai/Laos culture and traditions. PS. Mod is so beautiful and pear is cute 🙏🏼👍🏼🤗💯❤️thanks for the lessons!!
I like northeastern song. This lesson is very thankful for me.
Isan is spoken Lao. But read and written like thai. Learn both languages to understand Isan.
I’m Lao and Thai Issan is basically Lao just like how normal Thai is close to Lao.
It sounds Lao to me. Isn’t Isan a variant of the Lao language?
@@mitchellsouphasith3763 In french, this language is called both "isaan" and "laothaï". So, I guess it is.
@@thechilledonion9313 it is Lao language yes
I love u 2 ❤❤😂😂😂
love isan... best music in Thailand :)
Best muay thai entrance
Luk Thung rocks !!!
I am in heaven watching your informative lesson. You are both even more beautiful than usual today.
Thank you for your kind words. We are happy to hear that you found the lesson useful. :)
For all foreigners in Thailand we have at least three local languages and Thai language is formal language I’m E-san people and i think Laos it’s like brother and sister

Isan is like the North Ireland to the UK or the Québécois of Canada…just modern artificial borders divide the people. Lao people are Isan (and if you go back further Lanna Thai too) ancestors. Why else do you guys eat Sticky Rice and not regular White rice as staples unlike Central Thais? Lao-Khmer-Mon are Central Thais ancestors….shame history and blind nationalism doesn’t teach most Thais about their peoples amazing heritage ties!
@@wegotit2587Central Thai the real Siamese are Mon-Khmer. They actually nothing to do with Lao people. Now if you want to put it in modern perspective most Central Thais are now mix of Mon, Khmer, Chinese, Indian, Persian, Malay and Tai.
Great that you make lesson about Thai Esan language ! Thai and Laos very similar most words !
so glad Mod and Pear are back, with a very interesting lesson!! ;-)
Thank you for your kind comment. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. :)
Perfect! My girlfriend is from Esaan...i really had to learn this to impress her. Thank you so much ^_^
Manit Monsur Congratulations bro, stay sweet with your girlfriend 😉
Thai issan = Thai Lao
Aaron Vilayphone No, Lao is a completely different language. Isaan is Isaan, yes it’s very similar to Laos but it’s not
A A
You’re such a dumb ass. Go read up on history. Aaron correct. You are probably Isaan and don’t wanna
Have any association with Lao. That’s is fine but to say they are two different is bullshit. The Thai look down on your dumb ass.
Ny S Isaan and Lao are different, so shut up if you don't know anything about it.
@@benjamatuthanukro3626 They're quite similar
@@MrLaobuck whoa, no need to get so offensive.
I'm half thai but I'm living in Laos right now, felt almost identical to Lao

If I hear that correctly, the tones in Isaan vary slightly from the tones in Central Thai. I would really appreciate a video on that! :)
I am from nkp ,all my life i thought i speak isan ,but one day i found out i am actually speaking loas because all my friends in usa said my isan is so different from everyone.

That was an excellent lesson. Thank you Mod and Pear.
Watching you two best of friends is so much fun.
And I learn a little Thai on the way too. :)
How about doing another lesson for the Lanna dialect? Please
Thank you for the lesson. More please, so that I can communicate better with my Isan friends.
Great Video, I really got a lot from this very useful video.

You don't see or hear Khmer surin saying they speak issan. They say, they speak khmai. They are proud of being khmer.
We are proud to be Khmer-Siamese and indigenous people of the Northeast region.

Hi Mod
Have you stopped doing the video?
Its so fun before to get new video, when they were more frequently.
Hope there will be more and more often.
Will you continue to make videos?
Do you have other projects in the pipeline?
Has something happened, there are so many video as before and not now?

Ladies... thank you so much for this video. Now I will be able to dazzle all of my friends from Isaan....and I have many.
BTW - You two were so na-rak maak maak back in 2016...and 15... and 14...and 13. 😉
This was a very educational video. Thank you! After watching, I had to go read more about the Isan language on Wikipedia.
Isaan=Lao, no such thing as it being dialect of standard Central Thai or its own language. Want to get the full experience of learning “Isaan,” then learn Lao. Why? Because unlike Isaan, not only you will get to learn the Lao language properly but also because Lao still maintains its original script. Isaan is forced to write using Thai script (and many of the younger generation no longer can understand their original ancestors’ writing system). Isaan terminology is barely a footnote in modern history, while Lao identity and terminology has existed for over 4,000 years! It’s okay if Isaan choose to be referred to as Isaan Thai and no longer Lao (it’s their choice and we do not blame them due to extreme forced Thaificiation brainwashing). So yes, learn Lao. It’s like asking a person, which is more worth learning, standard French or French Canadian? The obvious would be the standard original form of the language.
Your videos are great!! I use them all the time to improve my Thai. Can you please produce a lesson on the weather A-gart?
ThaiwithMod .....~Pear~ and ~Mod~ .... {Pear look like a KOREAN girl} and {MOD look like a Vietnamese girl} And they speak English style USA . But both are a good teachers.
Thank you for telling me how easy it is. It isn't it's totally confusing. :-)
Esan language is very similar to Laos language. It’s mixture of Bangkok language and Laos.
I lived in Nongkhai for 15 years and miss Esan language and Esan food such as Kaoniyao(sticky rice),somtam, and gaiyaan.

I love both of you
Wow very nice 👍Like to learn Isaan been to Khonkaen good impressions when going back
I love all of your vedios! and I love to learn Isan language
Wow, didn't realize that Isan dialect is so much different than the vocabulary from standard (Bangkok) Thai.
It's because standard Thai is heavily influenced from the Mon-Khmer dialect. As a matter fact the real Central-Thai people are Mon-Khmer before the arrivals of other ethnic grouops to the Chao Praya region.
khop khun laai laai der:-) great !
Isan language is basically lao language Not Thai language Isan is a form of lao language.
David Vue Isan is brainwashed and stupid. Be glad your ancestors lucked out by living on the Eastern side of the Mekong and not the Western, otherwise you would have been forced to identify as fake Thai nationality and forced to forget about your ethnic cultural heritage.

My family is from Laos. The isaan dialect sounds exactly like Lao.
Becuase it's the same Language
Thai people just call it "Isan" but, Isan people call it "Lao"
Isan is nothing more than a dialect of Lao (mostly Central Lao and Southern Lao speech patterns) mixed with a few Thai words here and there (obviously due to modern state formation influences). To claim it as a dialect of Standard Thai is ridiculous! Even linguists agree, Isan is a dialect of the Lao language….so yeah, I’m going to go with facts from scientists/historical ties over modern Thai State Nationalistic “propaganda.”
To say Isan is it’s own language would be like saying to someone from the U.S. that they speak good “American.”🤣 Yet even though the U.S. has a population significantly much larger than the UK, Americans still acknowledge they speak English and not “American.”
So why is it such a big deal for Thais to just not acknowledge facts? There is nothing wrong that.
@@wegotit2587 wow, talk about a coincidence, I was JUST talking or rather debating these same thing with someone yesterday. Using the EXACT same talking points and evidence you outlined here. Telling them that linguistics have established that Lao and Isan are varieties of the same language while Thai is completely different. Anyone saying otherwise, has just been brainwashed...I also made the point, that the situation is the same with Northern Thai, it is not a dialect of Standard, but its own language in its own right, that is actually closer to Lao but not a dialect of Lao in itself...Thank you for this....
because it is Lao, dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Calling it "Northeastern Dialect" is not only untrue, but it is insulting....Also, if the Thais look down on the Isan people, why would they want to claim Isan language is simply a dialect of theirs, you'd think they would want to distance themselves as much as they could by calling it "Lao"
It's lao language. Cuz once Upon a time quick history... The eastern parts of Thailand use to be part of laos. So not only the Thais Conquered and took part of laos land they also took the people. But I'm glad they still speak the laos language. And all the foods you eat in isan are a staple of laos food. Give credit to where it's dued . Obviously the isan people which originally was laos will call them isan now since it's been years and years now and they seemingly made their own identities of being a hybrid of both Thai and laos language combine. But deep deep down they are lao.

Very nice Pear and Mod ! So people from I-saan can understand (and speak?) central Thai ? But central Thailand can not understand or speak i-saan?
Greetings from Pattaya.
Everyone has to learn central at school, that is what they have to speak in classes. They can speak whatever they want when they leave though.
tnx for the info

No such thing as Isan language. U Thai need to show respect to Laos more and stop being ashame if u want to use their language, god damn
No such thing as isan language. You don't see us Americans speaking English and called it speaking American. Even though some words are spelled differently, but it's still the same.lol
Be proud of your Lao heritage, Isan people.
Khmer surin are proud of being khmer.
LOL. I thought exactly that, the main languages spoken in Isan is Thai and Lao. Lao ethnic probably speak Lao at home or amoung themselves, and use Thai at work and other places since it is the official language of Thailand. Other ethnic groups would also use their dialect at home, and Thai officially. The "Thaification" is trying to differentiate people of this region from Laos. But they are different to central Thai, therefore they are trying to create a distinct identity of this region. After many generations, it will be just that. Majority of young generations will not know their heritage. Some already have forgotten, judging from comments made here.
I'm Khmer Surin too but I don't get the this Isan belong to Lao claim? 😂😂😂 I mean what have the Lao people accomplish in Isan or Thailand in general?
i love how isan people use "ham noi" for little boys ;)
Lol, almost 50% country folk nickname for boys.
That translate to little penis haha lol

How to say good morning/night/sweet dreams in isaan? Plz ty
This is small, but is จ slightly different in Thailand than it is in Isaan and Laos? I feel, in this video at least, that จ was slightly more dentalized when Pear spoke it, and that when Mod spoke it, it sounded a little more breathy, I think, and was closer to the (Northern) Vietnamese ch-/tr-. This is pretty small, and I don’t think I can afford to focus on learning Thai right now, but I still am curious.
Also, ร is not only interpreted as ฮ in Isaan and Lao, but also sometimes ล, right? Even in standard Thai I believe ร gets simplified down to ล in casual speech.
Isan, Issan, Isaan, Isarn, Esan, or Esarn - take your pick, it’s just transliteration at work and all variants are good. Now, for some lingo lessons to show off to your bar(girl)friends.

So good! Isarn isn't easy to learn, because there are no books or lists with words and expressions. I practice with songs
Isan is Lao.
They don't have words or expression for Isan is beacuse of Isan and Lao is the same language
if you want to Learn pure Isan you have to learn Lao
@@RS-fn4cg yes. I agree. Learning both important. Because we speak Lao but write thai.
@@AreeyaKKC yes, Thai people just call it "Isan" but, Isan people call it "Lao"
@Ben Stormrider, Your best reference would be to pick up Lao language books. Isan is just a “regional” label. There is no such thing as an “Isan” language…just like there is no such thing as speaking “American” or speaking “Mexican.”
The only difference with Isan dialect versus standard Lao is the incorporation of some Thai words and Khmer speech patterns for some Isan dialects.
Also, when you learn Lao, you can also pick up learning the writing/reading system too, which is much more phonetically written and easier to learn than standard Thai (thanks to Communists influences to modernizing the written language to increase literacy rates). Learning to write/read in Lao would definitely be impressive because Isan people no longer know how to write/read standard Lao cause they have to use the Thai writing system now.
I was told in central thai, I love you = pom rak khun, this esan seems totally different.
That cause Isan=Lao language but with borrowed Thai phrases integrated due to political modernization nation state.
The whole regions b/w Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia is so freaking close to each others and at some points in the history, lands are exchanged hands back and fore and people living on that lands as well. Biggest one is France colonized in 1947 and onwards with huge divided b/w the regions. Northeastern part of Thailand used to be part of Laos and no longer no more since the France divided the country alone the Mekong river to the west and designated as Thailand
I mean Isan used to belong to the indigenous Mon, Khmer, and Kuy too. Did you forget about that?
@@imperialkhmer6146 ain't forgot nothing but if you missed the point mentioned above. Here it is again..... That damn Legacy colonialism affected the entire regions just like what they are trying to it today and every parts of the world.... Ukraine is prime example and many many more.
Interesting differences. Can you help me with some Thai sentences for my video?

I LOVE THAILAND LANGUAGES AND CULTURES - WW
Lol thanks for this video! Its so helpful and Isan is such a fun dialect. Can you post some more vids please?
Please do not refer to Isan as a "Northeastern dialect" when it is infact a dialect of Lao language.
Isn’t Lao a dialect of Thai, but politically “different” from Thai?
I mean, you could just as well say that Thai is a dialect of Lao. It's like a Norwegian Swedish dynamic.@@WinniesHonayyyy
@@Ned88Man wait, so correct me, Lao “could” be considered a dialect of Thai, but the same could be said the other way around??
I think I kinda understand the Norwegian Swedish part?
Yes, it's definitely Lao language!!
Yup! People need to stop calling it “Northeastern Thai” no such thing!@@AMMe_936
I think northern dialects are more soothing to the ears.
Because you're from northern part lol
They aren’t “northern dialects” they are languages
When I am in Isan (Ban mari - near Selaphum) they say "Eer" sound for yes - I have not heard "maen". Is it different in different Isan villages/ places? Kop kun laai laaai!
Okay now I understand - thank you!

Eer = yep
Maen = yeah
Kha = yes
Something like that 😄😄

When I talk to my friends, I say "eer" for yes.
When I talk to someone who is older than me, I say "maen" for yes
When I talk to my parents, my teachers, or a stranger, I say "Kha" or "maen kha" for yes
And I think all of the provinces in Isaan are the same.
Sorry for my bad English, I just try to help you. 😅😅

Can you do southern Thai?
New Subscribed and liked!
always getting confused is it thai or isaan? your video is helpful, thanks
neither, its a dialect of Lao

Isan should be incorporated to Laos.
I think isan should just be it’s own country. We are proud of our Lao blood but not the government
@@Thethe49er yes, independent Isan!
Did you ask the indigenous people Mon, Khmer, Bru, Kuy, Khmu,?? 😅😅
how do you say yes and no in isan?
Yes - แม่น maen, No - บ่ bo. And if you have close friends you can agree with an "ugh" sound spelled roughly as "เอ่อ". I used to live in Sakon Nakhon with a Thai family when I worked in Thailand as a teacher :)
