Loved the rebuild process, will definitely be rebuilding some of my planes over the coming weeks.
The iron sharpening process i found rather complicated, not to distract from how you sharpen your blades/irons and chisles of course! You do a fantastic job!!
I can sharpen an iron or chisle in under 30seconds with only two steps. And i mean shaving sharp. Thats whats required in the workplace. Time is money.

This is one of the best restoration videos I have seen. I will refer to it often. Thank you. Somewhere Mr. Harris is smiling.

i was worried you were making a museum piece that wasn't going to be used at one point, but seeing the jig for squaring off the iron and the final result made it clear - i'm sorry i doubted you. lovely result.

Usually when I get ahold of one I set them up to be used. Occasionally I’ll get a plane that I’ll pass onto someone else because it’s a rarer plane and I usually don’t mess with collectible or rare planes.

If I can make a suggestion, get a 1" paint brush and cut the bristle down straight across really short. Excellent for getting into crevices to clean stuff without scratching

I normally use Q-tips, but had run out of those.

Great result. I still haven't used a No 4 yet. I do use No 3, 4-1/2, 6 and 8 more than all other bench planes. People say you have to have a No 4 and No 5, but it's up to your personal preference. Use the ones you are happy with. I might skip No 4 and go straight to No 604 when I rebuilt my plane till.

I agree, I really like no 3’s. I agree with you, people should use the planes they are comfortable using.

Hey Dave, such an awesome restoration you did, I really enjoyed the process, just wondering what’s the point of using the fine metal wite wheel at the beginning if you then use the 400 grit with oil to get rid of the rust. I kinda understand you as your passion is palpable and your videos transmit that!
    Well done 👍

A heavy wire wheel if used too aggressive, leaves permanent marks. The wire wheel I use is made for brass and aluminum and thus is considerably more gentile on the metal.

That turned out beautiful. Good work on the restoration and tuning.
I wonder how the performance of this almost 100 year old plane would compare to a mid-price ($100 +/-) modern plane?

You can just about tune any plane to perform well. If the iron were upgraded a little thicker it would perform as good as any.

Great videos. I'm just starting out on learning out to clean up and restore bench planes, and your videos have been a great help. Out of curiosity, how would you deal with any rust or resin in the corrugations since lapping won't get to them?

    • @DaveCorinth
      @DaveCorinth  7 місяців тому +1

I take 180 grit sand paper and fold it so that it will fit into the corrugations. I do this before I lap.

Hi Dave I have restoring and selling and collecting Stanley planes for years. Great job. By the way where did you get that Stanley rule and level company tee shirt?
    Thanks again, Rick Hill

Could be this was a second #4 that Mr. Harris decided to have that grind put on it so he would have a light scraper plane? Could be he sold it at a garage sale an’d had it done or it was sold at a multi-family rummage sale hence the name and how much? I greatly enjoy your channel.

Could be, who knows. My first thought was that it was a price grinding the edge. We’ll never know for sure. And thank you for watching.

Great video, learned some new ways to deal with rusty spots :) Anybody has an idea about a german product similar to the paste wax?

Now you have to take it all apart and wax it all over again.
