Dr. Moore is accurate in stressing the importance of a good ending -- it makes all the difference in the world. I'm a chord melody player myself and often employ this method of raising the I chord half-a-step; with major sevenths, it's a very lovely sound. Excellent lesson!
Thank you for the whole "Western Swing Series" I'm so in luv with it. I started Gipsy Swing guitar at the age of 48 and i still in it at 58. Since a few years i'm also in Country music and so i found your Western Swing vids on UA-cam. So there is much relationship between Gipsy Swing and Western Swing. I think i could play lots of Western Swing right from the stand...but not much chance for it over here in Germany. My best wishes from Germany and god bless. El
El, Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your knowledge of the similarity between gipsy jazz and Western Swing. I think you'd be surprised at what type of response you'd get if you played some Western Swing in Germany. It's the beat that get people going. I hope you're a subscriber!!!
I just returned from a trip to Berlin and while there I came upon a club on the banks of the Spree river where people were dancing to swing and western swing music. It was awesome, even my teenage daughters were into it. To echo Mr. Huston's comments, the beat gets people moving, even those not dancing were groovin'... And thanks for WSR - a great channel. I play bluegrass/Jazz/Western Swing on the guitar and fiddle, and this channel is a terrific resource. And, I'm a subscriber!
My favorite ending/turnaround is the first inversion of the I, chromatically walking the bass note down to a iim6, and then a V7 slurred from a half step above or below
One reason that a #Imaj7 resolving to a I chord works is because the maj7 note in the #1maj7 is the I chord root. It especially works with songs that end on the key note since it's in both chords. In this example the #1maj7 resolves to a 1maj7. It also sounds nice (maybe better) resolving to I or I6.
I have two channels. The one I'm on now is my guitar channel where I started posting guitar licks/solos and songs as I relearn them after recovering from a couple of strokes I had in 2004 that made playing impossible for years. I have another channel, since 2006, that is my personal youtube channel where I follow people and channels that interest me, but where I only post family videos that are not made public. I started following you from my private/personal channel, and don't want notifications coming twice....so I don't subscribe to the same channels from both of mine. I have 2400 subs here on this channel, and over 856,000 views...so I get hit with lots of messages asking for assistance, spam etc. but I wanted to start following this series on my guitar channel...so I'm here today from that. Hope that didn't just make it more confusing..haha.
DD, I spoke with Dr. Moore regarding your question. He and I were wondering if, at some point, someone was going to pickup on that but of course, we were focusing on the #1 to 1 ending. The turnaround you're referring to is 1, 1dim, 2m7, 57 or 57+. I hope that helps. And, I hope you enjoy Western Swing RULES!!!- R.H.

So you can actually link my channel to your channel????
your example was a more involved turnaround, but your explanation was only the simple 1/2 step modulation...please explain the turnaround
