A big no for doing PhD in India. I did PhD in India, totally demoralised about my self confidence. Joined a lab in UK as post doc fellow, thankful to the professor in UK, brought back my confidence in my knowledge. Working in industrial sector here at UK as stand alone researcher. Totally worth moving abroad if u want to make all those years worth of study.

@@gauravcharjan7293 Hello Gaurav! If you are a PhD holder, the UK government opens a few postdoc fellowships around Jan-Feb Every year. Keep an eye and try to find a good lab who can host you for your fellowship. Professors in UK are interested in being a host for such fellowships and support you in the whole process. Its amazing to get such support. Moreover, the UK government has relaxed visa to permanent residency options in UK for PhD holders. I applied for Newton international post doctoral fellowship in 2019.

I am a PhD scholar in a prestigious Central Govt Institute. This Institute holds its own PhD entrance and provides it's own fellowship. The competition was tough, but I got it. My parents were
excited as they thought was very prestigious to PhD here. A year went by smoothly, but i soon started facing problems in 2nd year. I realised my guide had little knowledge about our topic. She is the HOD and quite old and doesn't want to waste time learning new concepts. As a result of which the entire burden of the research work fell on me. From making protocol to funding paper work to correcting my own work I had to do everything on my own. I used to cry and wanted to quit but somehow went along.. Right now I am in 4th year and writing my thesis. I realised that I know more than other PhD scholars with young guides. I realised due to doing things on my own I got an opportunity to learn everything from boring paper works to doing stats for meta analysis. I have friends who do not know how to submit an article in a journal or what are important funding agencies as all this work was done by their guides or seniors in lab. So everything in life has good and bad side to it. Sometimes when you go through the worst, you come out more patient more knowledgeable and more learned

PhD in India is a scope for exploiting students.. we r neither like students nor like professionals. I am CSIR fellow.. neither do we get a regular income, nor are we respected for our job. My suggestion for anyone who is passionate about research, if you to be respected for your knowledge and hardwork, go abroad.. your hardwork will be appreciated over there, you will get your legit income at the right intervals and you will be respected.
Anyway, instruments in India don't work properly.

Being a student you can feel it that by the time you apply for Ph.D in India after finally qualifying NET, your energy already gets drained up because of bad education system and developing zero skills among the students in India. I’m in masters right now and feel so frustrated sometimes because of continuous assignments thesis semester finals and not even a single field trip for the students!! I’d say, If you came this far then don’t waste ur further energy in something which is not good for your mental health and giving you zero outputs, rather go abroad and work, learn under professionals, you will be more at peace.

I enrolled into a PhD program in a Renowned Public University 2 years ago. I had a remarkable academic background so got a seat under a Senior Professor who otherwise does not give seats to average scorers. My Supervisor would call me up in the middle of nights and shout upon me for no reason and then later apologize as well. Throughout these two years, she made me change 6 topics of research and made me do book review on one of her favourite authors for a year straight. Now, when even after taking extension, my topic is not decided, my synopsis is not even started with and I have planned to drop my PhD already. I literally feel that in India, some of the Arrogant Supervisors too are a reason for making this otherwise Beautiful Academic Journey no less than a Torture. Also she made me start taking anxiety pills coz she left no single situation where she would not embarrass me. But then Karma came to the rescue and I finally got back into a Contented version of myself and she on the other hand is still a Toxic and Depressed Person. All I want to say is, Do not let any toxic supervisor make your life Toxic. Life is not Limited to One Supervisor, One Academic Program or One Opportunity. I will start my PhD again but never compromising again with any toxic supervisor.

Your observation, Analysis and conclusion about ph. D in India is cent percent true. It's a bitter truth of Higher Education in India. Day by day situation becomes worst as so many vacancies in many colleges and universities are vacant no one is there to teach/guide students. That's why illegal practices are increasing and students with a confused mind set get degrees. But zero knowledge it's very worst situation for a developing country like us.

I think root cause of chaotic atmosphere in Indian education system lies in primary education. As primary education is not world class here 99.9% students can't lead themselves in positive directions. Because if potentialities of children are not explored within 5th standard most of the students will follow worng direction in future.
I found most of the students can't draw well even they don't like to draw but drawing is needed almost in every prestigious profession.
If anyone can't draw well with speedy hand he will not be able express his ideas with confidence. I do think I am right in my views.

Being a research scholar myself a few months back, I would like to mention a few things.
    1. A scholar NEVER gets to choose a topic of research for his/her. The supervisor's decision is penultimate.
    2. Research work is actually fun if it is NOT something you are just forced to do. We worked in labs for about 12 hours; we worked on weekends, holidays. All those were enjoyable. We learned things together, we found out new solutions to our problems together, we had feasts while working late, and many more. But it feels pathetic to stuck in the lab without any particular work!
    3. All of us are raising our voices against the situation. But has anyone among us given any idea to improve the situation?
In India about 6% of the population is poor. So, we cannot blame the government always for not providing sufficient amount of research grant or researcher positions for researching just anything.
What percentage of our research outcome is applicable to the society? What are the benefits we are getting from the researchers and their highly impacted publications?
We are always blaming at each other. Have we ever tried to identify the major problems and solve them?
I worked at a CSIR laboratory outside kolkata for about a month. I was overwhelmed to see that all the buildings have solar panels and the back up power is provided by the solar energy only. To complete our PhD curriculum, everyone has to complete a set of 'course work', which barely has any outcome. There (at that CSIR institution) the scholars had to visit any nearby village and teach something new technology/technique to the people (we call this process 'technology transfer'). Whatever the researchers are finding out there, they are using it for the welfare of the society. Therefore, it is utmost important to direct our research for human welfare not for personal welfare.

    1. Aren't they (PhD holders) getting jobs even in industries with some handsome income (like how much can we get after PhD in industries)?
    2. Does Post doc. after PhD put some weightage to our careers (who are interested in Research specifically) ?
    3. & Most importantly; Isn't doing PhD in foreign financially challenging too.. (initially), What if some of us can't afford it? 😞

      1. That handsome salary is available for only STEM PhD holders. What will a Theoretical/Experimental Physics PhD holder do? In the US/UK, physicists are employed by defense industries where they do top notch modelling work on missiles, optoelectronics, etc. Where is this happening in India?
      2. Two to three post-docs are common in the West if you want to have tenured position in universities. From what I have read, one post-doc is ok if you want to jump into industry.
      3. Initial costs are high(~5 lakhs) but you can get a loan for it. It's not an extremely big amount.

Sir i have wasted my time in India for the UGC net exam as a arts humanities student. And ugc net exam syllabus is absolutely irrelevant to the phd program. Where as in abroad phd courses require the relevant work experience related to your academic field and all. So this is where the difference begins.. so after the so many exhaustive experience now I am thinking of applying in abroad for the higher studies.

    • @ishannande7763
      @ishannande7763 2 роки тому +2

In India exams are used to weed out the competition. That's why you see everywhere entrance tests, aptitude tests and so on. The population is so high and quality jobs so less that such exams become unfortunately necessary.
India seems to be the last place to do a PhD in arts and humanities. I mean where is the post-PhD scope for this field ? Also, I don't know any institute apart from TISS and JNU which will be a good institute for a PhD.
I agree. When I interviewed for my PhD abroad they asked me technical questions related to the research topic. I got into the program because I also had relevant work experience. In India if you want to excel at something you need to either be in IT(lot of money if you make the right moves) or you need to be extremely smart(IISc, IIT, etc.). Everything else seems to be bound in mediocrity.

Doing a Ph. D in reputed institutes will teach you not only conducting research but it will give a lot of mental strength. I agree that the opportunities are not quite good enough. You aquire a lot of skills while persuing the doctoral course, which will be useful in the life time especially when you go abroad with a pH.D degree you will see the real meaning of it. For individuals interested in research can go for a post doc positions out of India, like US, UK. Them you can see hope.. Simply doing PhD for the sake of senior positions is waste in India and not gonna acheive anything unless you do it in IITs or AIIMS

Big big no for doing phd in india.
I have seen how horrible the way phd scholars are tortured by their thesis supervisor( phd guide).
Not every thesis supervisors are devils. But majority of thesis supervisors are devils. Thats true whether you like it or not.
In private universities like amrita university , coimbatore , phd scholars are slaves. Discontinuing phd is the only way to end their slavery especially in that cse dept.
But such slavery will never ever be brought to light. Academic system in india is framed in that way. If a phd aspirant got an immoral supervisor, he/she is destined to suffer. Everyone else will simply watch as mute spectators.
Better to go abroad or else do a background analysis before choosing a guide in india. This is foremost important than anything else for a phd joinee.

I think it's a very rudimentary classification - "India" vs "Abroad". I think it totally depends on the university and most importantly your supervisor. I know multiple instances of people being troubled by their supervisors in their program in the best of universities globally - UC Berkeley, Stanford, UChicago etc. So much so that they quit their programs. Every university in India has a drastically different approach. I'd suggest you focus on that rather than such gross generalizations

    • @siddharthdangwal6054
      @siddharthdangwal6054 2 роки тому +2

@@shomusbiologyofficial The topic is also super important. What I meant was every lab and university is different in a country. Classifying the quality of the PhD based on the country is a very rudimentary classification. This ignores a lot of variables and may lead to people missing some great opportunities here in India and blindly moving to some other country at a university which is much worse than the opportunity they were getting at home simply because it is a "foreign country". Extremely wrong classification and very rudimentary analysis
