Thanks for sharing your reviews and rationales for these six books. Your review of A Fever in the Heartland was so compelling that I have added it to my TBR. The power of the Klan has always unsettled and frightened me. I began teaching in the mid-1970's in Louisiana and was shocked, concerned, and helpless when I noticed students in my classroom doodling/sketching Klan symbols or when I encountered giant billboards advertising Klan gatherings. Thankfully, we only lived in that state for four years. Sadly, we continue seeing and hearing the same vile and abhorrent messages that were being spewed then. Hopefully, Egan's book is a first step towards awareness of this darkness in our past that has never gone away. As you pointed out, these ideas have merely been disguised and repackaged. I'll be reading this one very soon!

I still want to read A Fever in the Heartland. Eve is my best book of the year so far! And the group of books in the top 12 was very strong!

Wowow! That is impressive the move for King, since I know you adored that one... Excited your 1 was already on my tbr to get to this year even if its not for btp.

I filmed mine way early, too. I am finally giving up on trying to get interested in Doppelganger... but your 5 star books all sound compelling.

Yeah, people are all over the map on Doppelganger. And, to be fair, I went into that one with probably the highest expectations, thanks to the Women's Prize.

I truly appreciate your reviews of the books. I also judged this same group in this round. Our bottom two books are ranked the same way and I had much the same thoughts that you did, so thank you for articulating them so well. Similarly, I had a hard time ranking the top four books because they were all sooo good. My top three ended up being the ones that went through, but I also echo your endorsement of A Fever in the Heartland. It was a very good book and very timely indeed. The final round is going to be tough to rank because all the books are very worthy.

Oh yes! I'm already worried about ranking the final six! I only need to read two, and one had been on my TBR forever (Master Slave Husband Wife). I did just start We Were Once a Family yesterday, so we'll see how that goes.

Great Job! I really want some young female actress producer to do Fever in the Heartland as a movie or series very soon, it’s awards potential if done well should be off the charts.

A Fever in the Heartland should be required reading for everyone. It was so eye opening. I might be biased though because Timothy Egan is one of the two nonfiction writers that I immediately want to read as soon as their new books come out. And to clarify your statement about Oregon being a blue state - it may be blue, but it is still racist AF. One of my coworkers is black and the things she tells me about how she is treated on a regular basis is absolutely shocking.

Unfortunately, I'm not surprised about your coworker's experience, but it still breaks my heart. I've heard a number of people of color say the same thing.

Very interesting! I'm intrigued to read all of them except for Doppelganger, partly because of mixed reviews but I also never really got hooked on the premise. All of the other ones sound super interesting. And good for you for thinking for yourself and not just going with the family colors, I imagine that can be really challenging and I respect that a lot.
I read 1984 in July, so I'm very curious to read Wifedom, and also Julia by Sandra Newman which is the retelling from the female main character's perspective. Eve and Fever in the Heartland are high on my list to read as well UGH how to fit everything in?!

I know! So many books, so little time! I will say that Eve and Fever are both great on audio, though!

@@awebofstories Good to know! I can't find them on my audio app or the local library, but I'm sure they'll come in eventually.

I agree with your take on Wifedom. The fiction parts (they were pure fiction) diminished the value of the nonfiction parts. I was waiting for it to be booted out of the Booktube Prize to film a ranty review of it. I will try to film it this weekend. I liked Doppleganger more than you did. In fact I liked it very much. I can see what you mean by it casting too wide a net. Towards the end I was wondering why antisemitism and anti-zionism had to do with dopplegangers. But it didn’t bother me that much. 😁

Interesting that your top three are non-fiction.
