  • Matt Colville's Strongholds and Followers just came out for D&D 5e and it is packed with great home brew content! So of course the Home Brew Crew is here to review and see how this great Dungeons and Dragons supplement measures up. In part one we go over the followers section, and answer the question is it better than the new Sidekicks UA?

    Great video! :D Of course I would say that....
    We updated the retainer rules in version 1.01 so they save against spells differently (much harder to wipe them out with one spell) and the language for how they use skills is clarified. And Trackers get Pass Without Trace instead of Find Traps.

      Wow Matt! thanks for the kind words, those sound like great updates to your rule set we can't wait to see them in action. We really are enjoying Strongholds & Followers, come January we should be live streaming some of our weekly home brew sessions and would love to have S&F be part of those sessions as well (with your permission of course.) We are really trying to get as many home brew authors known with our channel as possible because there is so much great stuff out there to try out. If there's one thing we've learned it's that D&D takes on a mind of its own when you don't limit the creativity of what can be done. Once again thanks for all you do with the community, we honestly wouldn't have even started playing if it weren't for your videos. - Tony Home Brew Crew

    The way I read the healing, you can heal them with spells and they gain 1 health level per die of healing. So Cure Wounds from a 1st level spell slot would heal one health level.
    I'm not sure I'm reading it correctly though.

    I like how constructive your review and criticisms are. So much stuff on the internet is either "This is terrible and if you like it ur dumb" or "This is great, and if you don't like it ur dumb". This is a much more honest pros and cons approach, esp. the way you compare it to WOTC stuff.

    The Sidekicks Unearthed Arcana is really good for giving DMs simple tools to quickly generate and "level up" Nemesis NPCs that hold grudges against specific members of the party. Long term middle tier enemies that can come back over and over again throughout a campaign to harass and challenge their opposites/mirrors. All the DM needs to add to ensure they always escape from the party is a Ring of Spell Storing with Planeshift or Greater Teleport or whatever.
    For Order of the Stick fans the sidekick UA rules are perfect for helping the DM recast the Linear Guild without going through the parry roster and creating full "PC" builds to mirror the actual players.

    nice review and comparison between Retainers and Followers, I found the Companion System by Chris Ramsley (on DM's Guild) also very interesting to compare with the other two.

    The Sidekick is not a retainer, they are just a friend who adventures with you. So I don't think they are supposed to be used in the same way. You don't want to be a high level adventurer and have your 7th level retainer with you. They would die for sure. But I agree that this is a good rule set for out of sight out of mind management of a stronghold. You definitely don't need dozens of sidekick types around you to keep up with.

    Un-earthed Arcana? what's that?

    • @AthanUntapped
      @AthanUntapped 5 років тому +1

      Unearthed Arcana is the name for the open release playtesting of design done by the official D&D Wizard team. You can find it by going to the official D&D site and looking under 'articles'. All they've ever done is available, but they're sorted by newest, and they only accept playtest feedback from the newest article; so for example 'Sidekicks' is the newest so you can get it, and give feedback on it. You can also get the article from last month 'Ships and the Sea' but you cannot give feedback any more.
      It's how WotC get feedback and adapt new design to the desire of the community, and also gauge interest in particular topics. Some of it, if it does well and has interest, goes on to be updated and published in the books; for example Centaurs and Minotaurs were in the UA a couple of months before the release of the Ravnica book, which had them updated and officially in it. Likewise, over a year ago they did a bunch of UA articles for a bunch of subclasses, many of which like the Hexblade and Samurai ended up in Xanathar's Guide to Everything. Not everything makes its way into books, like they did Mass combat rules TWICE a LONG time ago, but there is (currently) no sign of any such thing making it into any book.

      @@AthanUntapped Actually I was questioning the guy on the right's strange pronunciation. I know what Unearthed Arcana is, but not what Un-earthed Arcana is. By the way it is an old AD&D book which introduced new classes and spells, as well. Sorry to trick you.

    • @AthanUntapped

      @@nathankelley1466 oh, alright. I thought you just didnt know and wrote it like that because that's how he pronounced it.
      And yeah, I'm aware of the history of the title, but that's irrelevant in reference to what they mentioned here in the video.
