Capes are dangerous! They can snag to a trebuchet, be chewed off into a dragon's maw, trip in a stair, stuck in a window, sucked into a storm of vengeance, NO CAPES!!!!!
now i want one to give my players strongholds so i can maximize the chance they get a tailor and make them a halfling named edna who is an eccentric who only makes outfits for successful adventurers ascended into nobility... no spoon fed born noble brats... only the men and women who can and probably will become gods... but also... no capes!
My 7 yr old son walked in while I was watching and asked "Is this guy running his video sped up?" No, son, he just has a lot to say, and wants to get the most information into the smallest amount of time. Signal : Noise
I cannot accurately express my excitement with regard to this upcoming product. As one whom plays a level 11 Paladin, and wants to relive that "stronghold/follower" time, this is going to be AWESOME! I've already secured an ally through role-playing, so I expect that roll may never happen ;) What truly surprised me wasn't the allies or mounts - it was the Ambassadors. THAT opens up a whole new meta-game inside the actual game. Politics, baby >:) Great work Matt!!!
Running Lost Mines of Phandelver, can't help but think that charts like these can also be used to repopulate the town as word gets out of the players presence, but also the reopening of the famous mines. Maybe optional suggestions for drawing followers (or at least "interested parties") to a community based on the party as a whole. I really like the thought of artistians and militia growing the town and it's resources. - Thank you Matt!
You are your own biggest critic. I recently just started DMing again the players said it was a rough start but I started watching your videos and everyone says the storyline detail and the gameplay has advanced to a game that the players and I enjoy doing every week.
You truly are a river to your people! The wand of wonder is so cool. I'm totally going to include the common, uncommon, and greater versions of it as a "reward" from the deck of many things for my setting. I'd really like to hear more details about your upcoming campaign and the setting for it as well as more about Strongholds.
The ideas in my head.... ooooh boy!! Gonna have to start a campaign where the players are the Followers, doing missions for the owner of the stronghold.
2:12 Ok, if I hadn't already put up enough to get this book, the fact that the chart includes Alicorns would have sold me instantly. This just made my day; I can't stop smiling.
Really looking forward to this coming out, just donated to the kickstarter both to support you and the work you do, and to take a look at making strongholds, something I've wanted to do for a long time.
Matt, you’ve done a lot to help and inspire me on my great DMing adventure. I love your videos, and I’m very thankful for all that you are doing and I can’t express how excited I am for this book. Keep up the great work! Oh and Priest is really good so far!
Best thing about this, is you can tell from how Matt talks that he has a genuine and deep passion for the project. I listen to a lot of his youtube videos while I am working, and just from his tone and tempo you can tell how excited he is.
ok bud i love your videos amazing; also people who think you talk to fast just are not on our level of excitment, i have never backed anything but this speaks to my soul i NEED this book. so good sir you have earned my canadian monopaly money.
Matt I've been watching you for over a year and I have never bought into a kickstarter... Until now. I am so excited for this book! Congrats on having a crazy kick starter you deserve it!
Decipher's LOTR RPG was my first RPG. Loved that essay. The flavor stuff in that book was fantastic. Read it cover to cover. Went back and read it again years later, and was just dumbstruck at how much that game left on the table. Still has a special place in my heart, though.
I am beyond excited! MY players just attained followers and a stronghold through their actions in my game. I have NEVER played in a game that did this, so I was at a bit of a loss for exactly what that would mean for them. Then THE NEXT WEEK you came out with this. Just awesome
Really love this. I've been working on strongholds and follower rules since 5e came out and while I made some great progress I'm way more excited for your stuff to hit my table.
Super excited about this I really have missed the Followers rules from 2nd edition. I have been house ruling versions of this since the changeover to 3.5. Thanks Matt for putting this together.
Video reminded to go back the Kickstarter. Had to wait how my finances looked at the end of the month. They were good enough to make sure I get the awesome Kickstarter exclusive hardcover. Thanks for all the hard work. :)
I just finished reading Priest and it was one of the best books I`ve ever read! Thanks to you I`ll begin my first DnD campain this weekend. I thank you so much for making such awesome content. You are really a river to your people :)
When you first mentioned how cool strongholds and followers were back in your "Let's Make a Fighter" videos, I hoped a book like this would come up. I'm excited you are the one to make it.
I'm really excited about this book. I recently started a West Marches style campaign (also based on your discussion of that), and a few of my players are interested in building their own keep. I plan on using these rules once they get past that point.
The DM for the 5E game i played in(that is in hiatus), would enjoy this kind of stuff. He had my Orc Necromancer get an apprentice, and 2 kobolds i messed with became followers of our Kobold Rogue.
I always loved the follower lists from AD&D 2E: they gave that additional benefit that Fighters, Rangers, Paladins, and Thieves needed when compared to the spellcasting classes. Unfortunately, my group rarely got to 9th or 10th level in any campaign (I myself only making it to being a 9th level wizard once - still my favorite class), so we never really got to see those benefits. The PCs' groups of followers tended to be made up of "named NPCs" and hirelings (themselves eventually becoming "named NPCs" that stuck around for story just as much as they did for their pay... well, some did, anyway). With these new upcoming rules, I personally don't think absolutely everything HAS to have some kind of game mechanic benefit (as that road leads to a tendency for power gaming in some players), but I do appreciate the possibilities for plot hooks and extra roleplaying involving these new followers. Also, despite my personal opinion, I can't deny that it'd be a good ruleset for newer DMs and players to try out in order to get comfortable with the whole idea. :)
Hey Matt! Just a minor thought here, but the idea of your Stronghold buffs only lasting so long provides some GREAT incentive not to do that most 5e thing of Long Resting after every single fight, if after 1 or 2 or however many long rests, you lose all your fancy Stronghold bonuses. It would provide a meaningful mechanical reason not to simply heal to full after every minor scrap, and help prevent every fight from being a 1 round nova. Just a thought, here. I'm super excited to see these rules!
This sounds so incredibly awesome! Super excited that I backed this, and can't wait to play with these rules. Side note, totally going to incorporate level titles into my game from now on!
i just have to say that i dont know if i will ever be able to experience these cool rules bot oh my god i love how all of this sounds and i suddenly want a stronghold
this is right out of my childhood heyday of playing D&d we had a thing called reputation and the higher your rep the more followers you attracted modified by your Charisma as well as your level but usually by level 10 you could have a full functioning keep with loyal followers you attracted or hired at a huge discount very very cool I can t wait for the book too come out
Every update I see, I get more excited about my decision to join at the super stream supporter level. I'm starting a new campaign soon, and i hope the play test material is released in time for the new group
So far I was still on the edge about buying the book, but this video absolutely convinced me. Just joined the kickstarter! I just hope it comes out before my campaign reaches that level. (Currently lvl 3, and we're pretty slow, so it might work!)
Leonhardt Blankhe I am also hoping to get the rules before my players get where they could use it. I think he will be releasing more examples that could be used to make do in the meantime tho
just add it somewhere in as soon as you get your hands on it. Wasn't this part of Matts spirit of DnD? The rules are for the players, not the players for the rules!
Can’t wait Matt, currently running yawning portal and plan to use this as a between dungeons. Likely next season they will find an undead pirate ship, and our lost and lonely dwarf will start building a stronghold on the island of Evermeet. Your book can’t come out soon enough 😆
9:21 - 10:22 this part reminds me a lot of a moment from a one shot I was playing in that was based in the WoW universe. Another player was playing as a blood knight (they're a bunch of special elf warriors iirc) and to get the mechanics they wanted they played as a bard 2/fighter 1/ sorcerer 1. The funny thing was that they actually in-character said something like: "I'm bard fighter sorcerer" to a curious NPC, to which my character said "I thought you were a blood knight."
Just fyi Matt. UA-cam has This vid categorized as the Paladins Video Game on your description Love the vid, your kickstarter, and can't wait to see the book pdf
I would love an in-depth video on each of the different types of follower units that you can attract. I find these rules very exciting and make the world that much more full
The 3rd Stronghold Action you put in looks like the thing Aderyn had cast on her in Priest against those Urmen Bloodrunners (IIRC). Love when the writing plays into mechanics.
I'm glad you chose Tailor for you main example, since honestly most players would roll and see a Tailor as something boring, but it sounds to me that once you explain any of the results (and their mechanical benefits) to a player, they are likely going to say, "Oh shit, that sounds cool!"
just looking at the paladin special ability granted by the stronghold i know im gonna have use for this book. and thats a very small portion of what it holds. i cant wait to see what you do with this and what it means for the future of your new company.
You have mad me salivate for the chance to use these rules. My party currently has a stronghold in one of my games and i would love to make it even cooler for them.
I really want to throw some of that sweet money to your Kickstarter, but for some personal circumstances I cannot not. However! There is a high chance that I will get once it is out on your marketplace. One way or another, you are getting my money.
+Rodrigo Quaresma yeah it’s not bad, but I think folks would be confused with some of the siege engines. Like, do people think of catapults as artillery? I think maybe! We’ll see, still got plenty of time to work on this.
+Matthew Colville I think a problem with splitting the classification along the current lines is also that ranged weapons were ubiquitous among both mounted and unmounted units. Light cavalry included mounted javelin throwers, mounted archers, mounted crossbowmen, and even mounted musketmen throughout history and across cultures and empires. Perhaps consider discarding the tripartite split of infantry/cavalry/ranged and instead make ranged simply another subset of infantry and cavalry? I certainly agree that since the advent of gunpowder warfare, artillery has come to mean cannon (and all its subsequent iterations).
I want Strongholds & Followers soooo bad. I feel like it's a chunk missing from my homebrew world(s), because even though those things are there.. I dont have a great way to implement them. Can't wait for the stream either.
Chocolate Thundah it's very old school and it brings back memories of simpler times when I ran the game for a couple of friends and did everything SO WRONG(I was only like 10 when I started) but we had fun and that's the important thing!
So excited for this Matt!!!! I currently have a difficult work schedule to join a game, but hopefully one day I will find a crew to run with lol. I cannot wait to watch your adventure unfold.
One thing that seems like an obvious change is that alignment (when it comes to attracting followers) should be based on people's perception of you rather than your actual alignment. Since after all people can only ever actually evaluate you based on your behavior and the information available to them. So good characters framed for a horrendous crime shouldn't attract good followers, but evil characters who've very well hidden their true nature might.
i hope the system comes with a cost to mantain units so you have to spend gold and gather resources like food from farmers around your outpost or maybe you have to take "jobs" as a mercenarie army where you fight in battles for lords around the country, building relationships with various factions and stuff like that
I was just reminded of a simple warfare system called Song of Blades and Heroes, It has a lot of unit types along lines of what could be in Strongholds & Followers. Ever seen it? Pretty simple system, though it's miniatures based. We used playing card style units. On another note, check MyFitnessPal. I used a simple tracking system to go from 220 to 190 pounds in three months. That can adjust the center of gravity for the bicycling.
Instead of Archer maybe Skirmisher would be a better choice of name? Pre modern skirmish units were mostly ranged unites with light to no armor and with only minor melee combat abilities when contrasted to the more heralded heavy infantry.
Hey @Matthew Colville I dont know that you'll have time to read these comments, But as a long time fan and viewer I can tell you I really enjoyed your break downs of what was happeming in your game more than I enjoyed the stream of you actually playing. It would be really cool if you could do short break downs of the sessions edited together with highlights of the stream, telling us the tale in a 10-15min window? Just an Idea, I know I would love it. Thanks again for your great content!
My friend and I have done solo campaigns where I ran my the other "PCs" in combat while he handeled them in RP. It was fun, but a bit draining having to learn to play a Fighter, Paladin, Rogue Warlock and Druid.
Hey just put in for the kickstarter! couldn't do the minis but I'm excited for the book. Suggestion for renaming ranged units (you could just call them ranged units) Missile Units is accurate and sounds very official.
I ALSO loved the level titles - I have created a whole hierarchy and history of a Monastic Order for my monk based on the idea of the old Monk chart - Grandmaster of Flowers and whatnot! Hmmm I wonder if anyone else would be interested in that...?
Having a professional tailor gives you advantage to resist grappling, because of her insistence that you never wear a cape.
NO CAPES
this great
Capes are dangerous!
They can snag to a trebuchet,
be chewed off into a dragon's maw,
trip in a stair,
stuck in a window,
sucked into a storm of vengeance,
NO CAPES!!!!!
now i want one to give my players strongholds so i can maximize the chance they get a tailor and make them a halfling named edna who is an eccentric who only makes outfits for successful adventurers ascended into nobility... no spoon fed born noble brats... only the men and women who can and probably will become gods... but also... no capes!
While having a plain, simple tailor gives you a steady source of intrigue.
5:55 - Marksman, it covers all the types of ranged combat without giving any specific designation.
My 7 yr old son walked in while I was watching and asked "Is this guy running his video sped up?" No, son, he just has a lot to say, and wants to get the most information into the smallest amount of time. Signal : Noise

Rob French Great idea for an application of the tables! I might just steal that for my campaign, haha
You are your own biggest critic. I recently just started DMing again the players said it was a rough start but I started watching your videos and everyone says the storyline detail and the gameplay has advanced to a game that the players and I enjoy doing every week.

30 minutes of information brought to you in 15 :) love the passion represented in the project....
Why would you want a tailor?
Good sir, let me introduce you to plain simple Garak!
HELL YES!!! He was my favorite character in DS9 I think!
I would love a 'simple tailor' like Garek. :D
Sisko really cheesed the list, says paladins don't get spies and he gets a "tailor."
Far and away my favorite Star Trek Character OF ALL. TIME.
The ideas in my head.... ooooh boy!! Gonna have to start a campaign where the players are the Followers, doing missions for the owner of the stronghold.
I wish I had seen this the second it came off its ripping hot press. I love it all!
Just backed!!! Super excited to see the end product! Good luck Mr. Colville
2:12
Ok, if I hadn't already put up enough to get this book, the fact that the chart includes Alicorns would have sold me instantly. This just made my day; I can't stop smiling.
This feels like heroes of might and magic and I'm 100% in.

My mother was a tailor. She sewed my new blue jeans...
It's a shame about your father, though. But at least he had a suitcase.
This is tremendously awesome. This video inspired me to back the project. Love the paladin table and I trust your skill as a writer. Excellente!
Video reminded to go back the Kickstarter. Had to wait how my finances looked at the end of the month. They were good enough to make sure I get the awesome Kickstarter exclusive hardcover.

this Book keeps getting better and better as you disclose contents ... hard not to be salivating at the options as you said, well done Matt!
Best part of the morning is turning on UA-cam and finding a new video about the book!
i just have to say that i dont know if i will ever be able to experience these cool rules bot oh my god i love how all of this sounds and i suddenly want a stronghold
this is right out of my childhood heyday of playing D&d we had a thing called reputation and the higher your rep the more followers you attracted modified by your Charisma as well as your level but usually by level 10 you could have a full functioning keep with loyal followers you attracted or hired at a huge discount very very cool I can t wait for the book too come out

This is way more than I imagined I would get with this book. Thanks Matt for your hard work!
I am a simple man. I see charts, I like.
So far I was still on the edge about buying the book, but this video absolutely convinced me. Just joined the kickstarter! I just hope it comes out before my campaign reaches that level. (Currently lvl 3, and we're pretty slow, so it might work!)

This is turning out to be exactly what I have been hoping for. Filled with anticipation toward the finalized product!
So glad I jumped on this kickstarter.
There are no raining fish in the followers chart?
Man, that just kills my hype. lol xD
just add it somewhere in as soon as you get your hands on it. Wasn't this part of Matts spirit of DnD? The rules are for the players, not the players for the rules!
Been following your channel for a couple of weeks. Just dropped my pledge for the KS. Congrats! And, looking forward to it.
Can’t wait Matt, currently running yawning portal and plan to use this as a between dungeons. Likely next season they will find an undead pirate ship, and our lost and lonely dwarf will start building a stronghold on the island of Evermeet. Your book can’t come out soon enough 😆
I'm going to have to save up for this before my campaign gets too far in. Thanks for fleshing out a system i thought had a lot of potential!
This sounds like a D&D mobile Gatcha game. I'm excited to incorporate this stuff in my Campaigns
I was already into this. This video put me over the top. I'm full-on excited about the possibilities this opens up for the campaign I'm running.
I like the idea of using these where the player characters start as followers for an NPC Strongholder
woah, a generational game. Mind blown.
2:32 You don't know me. Maybe I'm saddened by the lack of fish rains in the follower chart
Just fyi Matt. UA-cam has This vid categorized as the Paladins Video Game on your description
Love the vid, your kickstarter, and can't wait to see the book pdf
I would love an in-depth video on each of the different types of follower units that you can attract. I find these rules very exciting and make the world that much more full
Late to the party but at 3:50 I think Matt meant that there are 9^2 combinations
The 3rd Stronghold Action you put in looks like the thing Aderyn had cast on her in Priest against those Urmen Bloodrunners (IIRC). Love when the writing plays into mechanics.
My paladin had a demon lady follower. It was pretty cool for character development.
Great video! I am really looking forward to the rest as we get to learn more about the book. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
14:27 The "artesianal" power of my welldigger follower is to produce mineral water.
I hope we get a video on how and when the Playtest will be, I am getting very excited to add this to my Storm Kings Thunder Campaign
You're my hero Matt, keep kicking ass until the sun goes down!
You have mad me salivate for the chance to use these rules. My party currently has a stronghold in one of my games and i would love to make it even cooler for them.
This project is the best thing to happen to D&D, since D&D.
"Missle units" encompasses arrows and javelin, but also artillery like trebuchets and catapults
This is so helpful, my players are almost level five and want a stronghold thank you!
Definitely would like to hear more about the upcoming stream.
Matt, this is so cool! I'm so freakin excited for this book! Thank you my friend!
I really want to throw some of that sweet money to your Kickstarter, but for some personal circumstances I cannot not. However! There is a high chance that I will get once it is out on your marketplace. One way or another, you are getting my money.
I am going to get the book even just for the military stuff... I LOVE coming up with military units, names, backgrounds, banners and the like.
Artillery is probably a good name for the ranged units =]
+Rodrigo Quaresma yeah it’s not bad, but I think folks would be confused with some of the siege engines. Like, do people think of catapults as artillery? I think maybe! We’ll see, still got plenty of time to work on this.
Artillery or missilers if you don't want to say archers.
Why not Skirmishers?
The more I hear the more I like this. Are there going to be rules for what tables multiclass characters roll on?
+Matthew Colville I think a problem with splitting the classification along the current lines is also that ranged weapons were ubiquitous among both mounted and unmounted units. Light cavalry included mounted javelin throwers, mounted archers, mounted crossbowmen, and even mounted musketmen throughout history and across cultures and empires. He put gnomes in the follower chart! I can only imagine the cognitive pain he felt when he wrote them in.
This is so useful I’m going to be starting a campaign soon and I will be using to try and curve murder hobo-ism behavior
I like Matt's spin on D&D so im glad the book's language will reflect this.
I need to go to Kickstarter and support this project, I will definitely be purchasing the final product as well.
THE POSSIBILITYS ARE ENDLESS
One thing that seems like an obvious change is that alignment (when it comes to attracting followers) should be based on people's perception of you rather than your actual alignment. Since after all people can only ever actually evaluate you based on your behavior and the information available to them. I am so excited for this supplement! Can't wait to see more.
Missile Infantry or Projectile Infantry has always worked for me. Also, Missile/Projectile Cavalry.
i hope the system comes with a cost to mantain units so you have to spend gold and gather resources like food from farmers around your outpost or maybe you have to take "jobs" as a mercenarie army where you fight in battles for lords around the country, building relationships with various factions and stuff like that
Percentile charts! Warms my ooooold Arduin book lovin' heart. :)

Man I REALLY need to get this book! It's giving me happy thoughts of 2E and the followers you could get back then!
Love this idea! Fits perfectly into a post apocalyptic setting.
Always need a little Colville to start my day.
This is pretty cool. Having resources like this gets me excited as a fledgling GM.
I'm so excited! I'm starting to DM for my siblings and I know they'll get a kick out of having a stronghold!!

Hmmm I wonder if anyone else would be interested in that...?
super existed for my next campaign because of this book!!!
For ranged units, just refer to them as missile units or projectile units
I can't wait until this comes out!
