It is important to note that the “Turbo” part wasn’t removed from Super SF II. You just had to select it. Once the title screen would come up you simply had to push right or left on the D-pad to access three different speed levels: Normal, Turbo, and an in-between speed. The color of the “Super” in the title would change to indicate each speed.

One correction: the “turbo” aspect was not missing from SSFII- you just had to turn it on. On the title screen, when you just see “Super Street Fighter II” after Ryu shoots the fireball towards the player (and BEFORE hitting start), you hit right or left on the D-pad. This changes the color of the title and makes a “Speed” title with stars. 1 star is regular speed, 3 is “turbo”, and 2 is a middle point.

For me, it's Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers. It was the second video game I've ever played when I was a kid, I remember being so blown away by the classic Capcom jingle and the game's opening, I grew up watching my uncle and cousins have full-on tournaments with this game (as well as NBA Jam), it was this particular installment that was the basis for the 1994 movie; which is my absolute favorite guilty pleasure, and I used to have the biggest crush on Cammy. I know SSF2: Turbo and SFA 2 are seen as better on a technical level, but SSF2 not only has a special place in my heart but still holds up to this day.
For some reason, going from regular SF2 to Turbo, they took out a few things, like Honda's bath tub no longer overflows, and there's no breakable sign in Ryu's stage.

Hi Drunk! I just wanted to mention 1 thing about Super SF. All the bosses get a revamped tool set, since they actually get different attacks with different buttons, not just the same animations. Pick Vega/Claw, and check all his normal in Hyper Figjting and compar them with Super. Really, SSF2 had basically 8 new characters. Love your vids man keep'em comming!
While some of you had the privilege of playing these games comfy at home, I had to go out with my buddies to a nearby arcade store and spend a lot of my pocket money on the arcade, still it made me appreciate all the great VGs I have today :) I'm eternally grateful
Street fighter on the Snez was/is the best 😆 LOL I have a fighting stick and it is fantastic on the fighting stick on the PC using MAME 😆 there I test my case pnsl😂
Street Fighter II Turbo is my favorite. The speed increase was much appreciated and it was great to play the bosses. I remember saving up for it for months and going to Target with my dad to buy it.
SF alpha 3 is probably my favorite of all the sf games, had tons of characters some were unlocked, had 2 player coop like ryu and ken vs bison to re-enact the fight from the anime, was just a great game
I remember the first time seeing Street fighter 2 at the arcade when it first came out and I was like woooooow. Then the first Mortal Kombat came out and I was like holy shiiiiiit. lol! Seeing that pixelated blood gore and violence as a kid was insane. But Street fighter was by far still my favorite.
great overview.. seems like turbos a good one and if you can play on normal mode still pretty much makes the first outdated. and yeah alpha impressive. really cool they got that to run and play well on the snes.
My favourite was Turbo because the additional boss characters and alternate outfit colours, plus the cheat code that unlocked the max turbo speed to 10.
Alpha 2 wasn’t another version of Street Fighter 2. It was the 2nd game in the Street Fighter Alpha series, which was a prequel to the Main Street Fighter series.
HUGE SF fan and i played SF4 competitively for years and had all of these as a kid. Your analysis is spot on and makes perfect sense. Turbo is definitely overall the best SNES port to date with i think super SF2 right behind it because of features and characters.
Dude your channel is a slice of heaven. Please dont ever stop! Keep bringing game after game to us! And dedicate a whole channel to MegaDriveDrunk! You are forgetting the sega people! The megadrive/gensis and its games demand your wisdom!
youre so right about the sound. Its actually the first thing I noticed when I played the game. Plus, in Super SF2, Its the same sound for light/medium/Heavy kick/punch. In the first sf2, it was 3 different sounds. Also, I dont remember a SF 2 turbo in the usa for snes. I remember Super SF2 coming out.. How did I miss that? Unless it was just an overseas release (?)
I play Super SF2 TNC to this day. More frequently recently on Analogue Super NT and the MSU-1 version, which ports over music from 3DO version. The improved music makes a massive difference. Have to agree with the commentary - I wish I could port over the heavy punch and kick FX from the earlier SNES editions
I got SFII- WW, and then wasn't allowed to get Turbo as my mother said it was a waste of money. But she didn't get that speed, and being able to pick bosses was a big deal. First time I saw SFII-Hyper (it's arcade name) I was shocked to see Chun-Li do a fireball. I'd only seen her do it via her lightning kick on the bootleg versions. I don't like how the music stops at the end of each round. Keep that playing. As for SSFII, although I played it at the arcade, I didn't like it enough to want it at home. That game seemed to drift too far away from the essence of SFII being gritty. It went more pretty and the announcer was weird. The Alpha Games were amazing and I loved playing them in the arcade. Alpha 2 was a huge hit at my local arcade and there would be groups of teens and some young men who would challenge each other. I have fond memories of beating people.
That last game is part of the Alpha series, a prequel trilogy taking place between Street Fighter and Street Fighter II. It’s a very different set of games from SFII. They introduced target combos, custom supers, alpha counters that let you interrupt block strings, air blocking, multiple super combos with varying levels of strength, Bengus was all over the art of this game (worked on the Marvel vs series as you mentioned, Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, etc.), deeper story, and not to mention that Street Fighter Alpha 3 has the best announcer since Bruce Buffer. Alpha 2 was very special indeed, very similar to how special Resident Evil 2 is to the N64. Why isn’t Leon Kennedy in Smash yet?
The first SFII SNES port was next level stuff at that time. It may look creaky now, but back then it was phenomenal, and it set an entirely new standard!
For those wondering why Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo wasn't mentioned, it's because it wasn't released on SNES. This version introduced those ultra super combos and Akuma. It also had 4 turbo speed modes. I still prefer Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the same reasons mentioned in this video (announcer, sound effects, character voices) but SSF2T was still a pretty solid addition to the SF2 saga.
Big diff is that Guile and Honda lost their straight jumps to be replaced with weird flips in addition to the special move and lineup changes. A small but significant change in terms of how they controlled.
Even though I never really liked this game that much since i always sucked badly at it, it still makes me very nostalgic and is a game that I consider a true gem. A blast from the past. I still don’t like to play this game, but I have it and I enjoy watching friends battle each other.
Turbo is my joint as well as the arcade. Fun fact the snes version has two codes one the first one everyone know the down L Up R Y B in the menu screen to unlock more stars to make the game faster but did you know if you took the player two control and input the code when the word turbo scrolls across the screen you can disable all special moves.
In Street Figher Alpha 2 you can change the button configuration. Since the heavy punch and kick are set to the L and R buttons I always switch them with the light attack (a and x).
Yep! The sound alone of Super Street Fighter 2 broke the experience. I loved when the plane flew to Japan and the announcer said "JAPAAAN!" in Hyper Fighting. SSF2 announcer sucks!
Although I grew up in the 90s I actually never really got into Street Fighter. I don't play fighting games very much unless it's the Super Smash Bros games. However I do also enjoy the Tekken and Soul Calibur games. I even played the original Soul blade that came out for the PS1 quite a number of years before Soul Calibur came out for the Dreamcast. I also played killer instinct on the SNES as well.
A while back I wanted to stream SF2, but wasn't sure which game I remember liking the most from my childhood (I rented all three at different points). After replaying them, I agree that SF2 Turbo: Hyper Fighting is my favorite, and SFA3 on PS1 is my favorite in the Alpha series.
It's astonishing that they got Alpha II running as well as they did on the SNES. Of course as with all 2D fighters, if you can play it on Sega Saturn you should.
Of the first three, I've always preferred Turbo because of the sound as well! And Alpha 2 is a whole other thing in my mind. Pretty much like you said.
One thing I really didn't like when I realized it was going on, is that in Super Street Fighter II, you don't fight every character. There are 4 added characters, but there aren't 4 additional matches. I guess that's easier and more fair, but I wanted the game to be as big as it could have been.
I think street fighter 2 turbo snes is the greatest street fighter 2 game behind super street fighter 2 turbo arcade. I think that specific sf2t snes port blew even the arcade version out of water, from everything from the music to the sound effects and voices. Even after I got ssf2 for snes, it still couldn't do for me what sf2t did
Interesting perspective of these games. I can't remember if I played Super Street Fighter 2 on SNES or not. I definitely played it in the arcade. The Street Fighter Alpha series is supposed to take place before Street Fighter 2 if I'm not mistaken. At least the first one was. That's why they had Charlie instead of Guile. This video brought me back to my crazy 20s. Yes that's how old I am. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video! You did a really good job explaining the differences and described each game very well. You were so right when you said it all depends on what you like and grew up with. Go, SSF2 The New Challengers!!
My childhood! I remember Good Guys electronics let you put things on pre order and you could make payments. I did this with sf2 and when drove by I mad small payments. I had to hurry before it launched. I miss those times.
i bought street fighter 2 for super famicom for $120 back right when it came out. what an amazing game. truly loved that game and played it hundreds of hours with friends. my favorite though is alpha 2. i was BLOWN AWAY that the snes could pack this monster arcade hit into a cart. yes there is mild slowdown and audio is poor (sounds like it is missing parts of each song) but the game itself is done very well for a snes title.
1:50 - 3:08 I've been saying that for YEARS. The punch sounds are so important. Sadly in Super Street Fighter, SF3 THIRD STRIKE, SF4 and SF5 they are a major let down and sound so feeble compared to the other Street Fighter games it takes away from the feel for me.
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is insane. It's good for leveling the playing field a little bit because it's new to most people. It's pretty weird to see load time on a SNES game, too! I like the original best overall. The other two really don't strike me as different enough so I just have the original and alpha (japanese versions)
@@luisabalos1973 Japanese version highly recommended because the price is better and you are going to get legit copy and not a reproduction. many of the rare/expensive US SNES titles are reproduced and sold deceptively. im sure there are some reproduction/fake Japanese titles too but not as many
I like Fei Long, he’s one of my favorite characters in the series but to say that he, a generic looking Bruce Lee clone, stands out more than a constantly smiling Jamaican kickboxer is crazy. Deejay is one of the most unique, cool characters in the series.
I always thought DeeJay looked like a sprite rip from an inferior game. And he was imbalanced as heck too. His normals seemed to have priority over everyone else's and he could use his machine gun punch to i-frame through everything. He's definitely more unique and original than Fei Long though, got to agree there.
I own super street fighter two and love playing it. Both cammy and fei long are great characters to play so based on that I guess I should stick with what I've got. Great video though keep up the good work.

Turbo only added turbo mode...
It was a good game. The sound is so terrible though
Super street fighter 2 is one of the greatest fighting games on the super Nintendo just my opinion.
While some of you had the privilege of playing these games comfy at home, I had to go out with my buddies to a nearby arcade store and spend a lot of my pocket money on the arcade, still it made me appreciate all the great VGs I have today :) I'm eternally grateful
I know this is an old post but this game and your review still gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling, thank you mate:)
Street fighter on the Snez was/is the best 😆
LOL I have a fighting stick and it is fantastic on the fighting stick on the PC using MAME 😆 there I test my case pnsl😂
I remember having blisters on my fingers playing Street fighter and I would have to stop playing for like a week. I was definitely a fiend.
great overview.. seems like turbos a good one and if you can play on normal mode still pretty much makes the first outdated. and yeah alpha impressive. really cool they got that to run and play well on the snes.
The key to turbo is changing your style of fighting.
This is something I needed for a very long time. As a kid I had World Warrior, but I was always curious what the updates brought to the table.
Cammy is in Super Street fighter 2 so that's the one I always go with
HUGE SF fan and i played SF4 competitively for years and had all of these as a kid.
Your analysis is spot on and makes perfect sense. Turbo is definitely overall the best SNES port to date with i think super SF2 right behind it because of features and characters.
Dude your channel is a slice of heaven. Every video I watch brings me to the time my cousin and I would visit each other every weekend, and sit in front of his SNES or my Megadrive, and play from sunrise to sunset. We would play game after game, having the best times.in our.lifes. Please dont ever stop! Keep bringing game after game to us! And dedicate a whole channel to MegaDriveDrunk! You are forgetting the sega people! The megadrive/gensis and its games demand your wisdom!
Thanks for watching
youre so right about the sound.
I wish Capcom had released Super Street Fighter II Turbo on the SNES.
I always liked Super Street Fighter II. Enjoyed the extra levels and added diversity of more characters. The combos were fun too.
Alpha II was amazing.
I had three of them, 2, turbo and super street fighter. Loved all three.
During SNES AND PS1 I played, purchased or rented nearly every fighting game on those systems!! I used to love fighters and rpgs
It may look creaky now, but back then it was phenomenal, and it set an entirely new standard!
super street 2 turbo all the way, it was the most requested challenge games in the arcade back in the days
Super and Alpha 2 are my favorites
For those wondering why Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo wasn't mentioned, it's because it wasn't released on SNES. This version introduced those ultra super combos and Akuma. It also had 4 turbo speed modes. I still prefer Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the same reasons mentioned in this video (announcer, sound effects, character voices) but SSF2T was still a pretty solid addition to the SF2 saga.
Interesting US SNES Classic received Turbo, Japan Classic pre-loaded with Super.
1. Turbo
2. Super
3. Alpha
4. Warrior
Big diff is that Guile and Honda lost their straight jumps to be replaced with weird flips in addition to the special move and lineup changes. A small but significant change in terms of how they controlled.
Wow this is from 6 years ago. Can’t wait to see the updated list!
Probably the 5th time I’ve watched this. Great video man, thanks. Gets me wanting to play all of them, and practice a lot .
Dude that Jamison analogy spot on just great stuff
Street Fighter 2 will always have more meaning to me as it was my first introduction to fighting games
Damn it's crazy they used the same sprites from alpha 2 in later games like CVS2 on the ps2
Alpha 2 for the snes is impressive that they were able to shove a 32-bit game into a snes cart and have it run as well as it did
really big fan of Super Street fighter 2 Turbo. the 1st SNES game I used to play almost everyday
sf2 special chamption edition on genesis what i grew up with. With all stars on!
It's astonishing that they got Alpha II running as well as they did on the SNES. Of course as with all 2D fighters, if you can play it on Sega Saturn you should.
Street Fighter 2 Turbo is my favorite 2D fighting game of all time.
Of the first three, I've always preferred Turbo because of the sound as well! And Alpha 2 is a whole other thing in my mind. Pretty much like you said.
You can change the controls of Alpha 2 during the match by pressing start / select. cheers !
Jk Simmons with a flat top 😭😭 I cant unsee that now 😂😂😂
well done video and excellent way to summarize their differences, and I would agree with literally everything you said. Good work
Street Fighter 2 was the first game I’ve ever beaten. For me though it’s SSF2, still in my top 25 games of all time. Played it so much
Super Street Fighter II was great and still holds up to this day. I still enjoy playing it from time to time.
The Alpha series was called 'Zero' in Japan. They were set as prequels
Awesome video! Great job pointing out the small details and differences in each game!
Just discovered you, Snes Drunk. Love your work.
Thanks for taking the time to watch
Good video, but there's totally a button map option in SF Alpha 2. It's in the options in the same place it is for the other games.
Alpha 2 with the speed cranked up option is better than most n64 ps1 fighting games. It's AMAZING the snes could do this.
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is insane. It's good for leveling the playing field a little bit because it's new to most people. It's pretty weird to see load time on a SNES game, too! I like the original best overall. The other two really don't strike me as different enough so I just have the original and alpha (japanese versions)
Friend, which one do you recommend, the Japanese or the American version? I saw that there is a lot of difference in price..
