There are several less populated amazing places to live in Virginia. Perhaps you should visit Winchester. The Oldest City west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rich in American History. The Old Town district Walking Mall is alive with arts and music plus many Restaurants . Frederick County has beautiful parks and disc golf course. There was a also a Par 3 Golf Course. The countryside is full of apple and peach orchards as well as at least 3 farm markets! Definitely my number 1 place to live in Virginia.
These are all the densely populated areas of VA, except Staunton, which is pronounced Stanton. I've lived in NoVA since 1978, agree with Alexandria and Arlington, but I'd switch Herndon with Leesburg. Other good areas that aren't so expensive are Lexington, Abingdon and Monterey is gorgeous but not much there, lots of driving just to go shopping, but quite scenic, the Little Switzerland of Virginia, which is really all of Highland County, not just Monterey to be fair.
Herndon?! Very questionable. It has a cute downtown area but a high crime area especially on one street; Florida Avenue. There are many gangs here and several fairs have been canceled due to the threats made by such groups. You forgot some gems; Luray, VA for one
Actually, the content were produced by a native person who lives Virginia since she was 2 year old and now she already has grandchildren (you can see her profile at the bottom of the full article: homeia.com/city-living-guide/best-places-to-live-in-virginia/). The person who did the voice narrator for this video mispronounced the city Stauton because he does not live in Virginia. Overall, the content for our article and this video were written by a native person who are actually living in Virginia for many years.

"Less than an hour from DC" is not a benefit! Staunton and Bridgewater are closer to central Virginia and a lot friendlier!
Virginia is for Lovers!!!!
