  • My name is Ian and this is part of a series documenting when I was in helicopter training in the Robinson R-22. It's been a while since the last training flight, and this video is pretty old at this point, but I wanted to continue a bit more with this series for anyone who is looking to become a flight instructor. On this multi-part series, I'm sitting in the left seat and learning how to teach a student to fly. On this flight we primarily worked on low rotor RPM, straight in autorotations, and hover autorotations.
    Video Highlights:
    1:26 - Low Rotor RPM
    4:02 - Straight In Autorotation
    5:48 - Hover Autorotation
This video is not intended to be a substitute for in-person instruction with a Certified Flight Instructor.
Outro Music: "Invisible" - Vibe Tracks

Awesome, got quite excited when I saw this in my notifications. And it couldn't have come at a better time, I am putting my 3rd hour in the R22 tomorrow!

Well done. Its kind of like trying to get into your students head and then getting him or her to get into your head. Very tricky.

Low rpm in a robinson has great potential to become catastrophic with just the simple mistake of abruptly pushing forward cyclic. This is known as a low-G push over and it may cause the main rotor to contact the tail and shearing it right off. It's the Achilles heal of all robinson helis and it has been the main cause of hundreds of fatalities.

Glad your back. I'm jealous of those of you who are learning to fly helicopters. I was never able to master the helicopter. Years ago I gave it a go but just couldn't get it together. I went back to fixed wing. It was a 'mind' thing I guess but I enjoy your videos non the less. Keep flying safe.

That student seems like he would be extremely difficult to work with.

The "student" in the video is the CFI that is teaching the "CFI applicant" how to be a helicopter instructor. I thought the I thought the CFI Instructor did a fantastic job explaining and demonstrating to the Applicant what to expect from a actual student and how to explain the maneuver to an actual student.
