I, am torn which I like better, the Martinelli/Ponselle version or this one ! Both are out of this world,I am totally in a flux, I try to listen to both in sequence , and after listening a few hundred times am still undecided,so I will continue listening to both,Rene @ 88yrs
Not a chance. This is a beautiful recording but it lacks something that Martinelli & Ponselle's had - a well-defined inner fire. Corelli injects too much pathos and passion. The fire in his singing is not contained; it spreads beyond its controllable limits. Martinelli achieves maximum effect without going overboard. Good as the recording is - and it is outstanding, it lacks that something "extra" that cannot be defined in words but exists ephemerally - somewhere in the upper stratosphere. Nilsson is superb; Ponselle is sublime. There is a difference between the two terms. I can well understand your justified enthusiasm.
Shlomo, you'd better explain what you mean by "The fire in his singing is not contained". Seems to me it's a contradiction in terms as far as singing is concerned...
In order for fire to be effective it must be contained, otherwise, it becomes unruly and either ineffective or worse, destructive, Well-focussed exuberance is an asset and, as such, is welcome; if it is not contained it may ruin a performance.
Shlomo, it may well apply to a REAL fire, but here it is singing we are talking about! Corelli's fire is not of the kind that can be extinguished by any earthly means and is of the kind we would not WANT to extinguish! Just listen to his delicately performed diminuendos. And that is when he chooses to somewhat modify his interpretations of more sensitive passages. Ciao!
I admire your fighting spirit, Leonora but I'm not here to fight. Corelli's performance certainly deserves inclusion among the many outstanding recordings of this scene. But these are always subject to ranking. It may be fair to say that our ranking criteria differ. I would discuss this with you over a cup of coffee, willingly. As you say - Ciao.
Superb! What a beauty! Breathtaking mezzo voce and diminuendos...

@FranciscoArvizuH: Ok, but what do the dates have to do with anything?

Lovely singing.TY Cesaare for posting.
Great singing from both tenor & soprano. A rival for the great recording by Martinelli & Ponselle.

Exquisite!
My error. The appropriate term is ethereally, not ephemerally
Why didn’t you let the music peter out at the end?
