There are a few ways you can recover unsaved Excel files. You might not get the latest version with all of your most recent changes, but it’s a lot better than starting from scratch. Let’s take a look at those recovery methods to see how it’s done!
Imagine you had been working on a really important Workbook for hours and the system crashes. The file is not saved, and you just lost hours of work because you forget to hit the save button.
But what about when you realize that you made a mistake while working on the workbook an hour ago? How do you go back to an older version of the Excel file?
Well, don’t panic because we have compiled together some of the most efficient tips to recover unsaved Excel files and their older versions.
By default, Microsoft provides an AutoRecovery option which can recover files that were saved, but their latest version cannot be accessed because the system or Excel crashed.

No because I'm on MAC so there isn't even an "option" button under "File" - any suggestions on recovering from an Apple product?

oh my goodness, if i could give 5 thumbs up I would! I wasn't sure this would work as the file wasn't showing in the Autorecovery side tab in Excel, but lo and behold there it was in the file location that you helped navigate to. Thank you!

We've found the lost file on the location we have saved it (in our case, in a desktop folder), but with a different file type: a TMP file with another name. We opened the TMP file with excel & there was the lost file we've been so worried about losing its data! So we really recommend checking the file path you saved your excel file into but look for another file name & type (a TMP file type) and open it with excel & we hope that your problem would be solved!

I tried finding mine but unfornately there is nothing in my XL start folder and other folders are empty as well. I feel so defeated :(
I saved my file and created a new folder but can not find it at all. And it does not even show as recently used on computer or excel. I did this in hopes it saved the prior saved one but the folder is empty. :(

AutoRecover is such a life saver.
When my excel file crashed, I recovered it using the "Recover Unsaved Workbooks" in built-functionality.
Thankfully, I was able to recover my file which was not even saved.

Folder is empty 😢
Your folder says empty when you were hovering over it but when you opened it, there was something there 🤷🏼♂️
Why when i change autorecover location it keeps saving in appdata/roaming ? :(
