How to Propagate Blackberries Easily (Part 2) Rooting Results for Tip Layering

  • Here's Part 2 of how to propagate blackberries. Last summer we did some tip layering of our thornless Triple Crown Blackberry plant and got massive roots. This summer we've got the results and this little blackberry layer is just starting to put on new growth. We now have an exact clone of the parent plant and can continue to expand on our Blackberry row.

    I have followed your channel for several years. Last fall we watched you first Blackberry video and immediately began rooting several Boysenberry and Blackberry branches into two pots. Through the fall and winter they developed great root structure. We cut away the pots and planted them in our bed in January. I am really pleased to see how your buds turn upward. It will be great to see our new plants growing in the spring.

      Definitely take cuttings. Seeds will take forever to grow and fruit and there is too much genetic variation. With seed, you'll never get a specific blackberry variety.

    You didn't really torture the plant. It's pretty hard to kill a blackberry. I had one in a 30 gallon self-wicking pot, that was leaking, and all the water would run out of the reservoir. There was a huge split in the bottom. I built another self-wicking pot, and dug out a big chunk of the root ball to transplant into the new pot, and planted it there. I dumped everything out of the old pot, repaired the split, lining it with heavy plastic for insurance, and filled it back up. There were plenty of roots left in the pot from the previous plant, so I threw them back into the "newly repaired" pot, and covered them up with soil. It wasn't long before I had new blackberry seedlings growing up from the odd pieces of root that were left in the pot. Right now, there are about 15 to 20 seedlings that are about 6 inches tall, in that repaired pot, just because I threw the roots back into the pot that didn't get transplanted with the previous plant. Blackberries are pretty tough. If they're left alone, they will completely take over a field. Make sure you get the ones you want because it's almost impossible to kill them after they're established.

      You're welcome, Brian, and I'm glad you enjoy it. As long as the parent plant is cold hardy to your area, you shouldn't have any problem with the cuttings surviving. Cuttings are tougher than most people think. I made a series of videos about overwintering rooted cuttings in different climates. Upside down?! That's interesting! Hey Mike I live about an hour south of you and recently got a load of fine fir bark after watching your potting mix vids. It contains a good amount of super fines which I'm concerned will wash to the bottom of pots and fill the voids and lead to rot. Does yours have super fines? I sifted some through a window screen and removed some micro fines but took forever. Can I use it as is? The pile is also quite warm.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 роки тому

      Yes, use it as is! Mine is the same way. You want the super fine, all the way up to the fine. If it was too coarse then the water would just drain right through. Test for yourself, just fill a 2 gallon pot with the bark and put a watering wand over it and see if it drains well.

    Hi Mike - I know when you root cuttings, you stress to keep them in an inert substance, a humid environment, and out of direct sunlight. When you "layer" it though into another pot, won't it get direct sunlight if it stays by the parent plant until it roots?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, but that's a little different. The layer is already acclimated to the location it's at, whether that be shade or full sun, and it's still attached to the parent plant so it will continue to get all the moisture and nutrients it needs from mom.

      In the hoop house is essentially outside. The ends are open all winter and all the plants freeze hard as a rock inside. Blackberries can take extremely low temps and you have nothing to worry about with them. You can leave them outside, in a hoop house, on a back porch, in an unheated shed, or wherever else you want, as long as it doesn't warm up and break dormancy through the winter. For that reason, I wouldn't put it in a green house.

      @@MikeKincaid79 Wonderful! Thanks for the quick response! If that's the case, I think I will wait on cutting it off from the main plant unless it's absolutely necessary to move it.
      By the way, I had two vines springing out, and put the tips in two different planters. One was a very thick, sturdy (and long) vine with big, dark leaves. The other was shorter, very thin, and the leaves were smaller and very bright green. In your experience, are they equally as likely to successfully form new root systems, or is the young, thin vine less energetic about pushing out new roots?

    Be careful where you plant them. It took me forever to get them out of my yard and my neighbors. My neighbor from Oregon informed me that some species can be considered noxious weeds. He was right. I really didn't have the room for them.

    Be careful. I'd give anything to not have blackberries springing up all over my back yard. No weed killer kills them either.

      These are thornless and you can train them to stay in one area. I'll have future videos about this.
