Thanks Carl. That was exactly what I was expecting. The Game Changers didn't really critique it properly. You always give a balanced critique and review. I will say about this years packs that Eco Lifestyle and Nifty Knitting really work well together and blend well with Tiny Living and Parenthood's decor. I think we need packs that blend really well with what we already have in the game. Plus fixing the trashcan bug and the one that leaves skill building bars above a Sims head or the one that shows the wrong label above an item when you fly over it with the mouse and the stinky leaves one and the future cube/ball of clay one which I had to install mods to nix. Edit: Also command routing for toddler care is the pits. The engine can't resolve actions so goes in a loop for ages.That also needs fixing.
At least jungle adventure game pack seemed more fun and you could bring your whole sim family. Like a real vacation in a way. This pack seems like a fade. I mean for a pack like this where its based off my favorite movies and franchise you cant build houses within in the pack!?

It's preposterous is why I brought it up. I am reviewing a new pack, I play the new pack. If i can master caster in 1.5 or less hours its a problem to me. I expect at least 5 hours of gameplay for $20.
That's because Sims 4 is pretty low on gameplay. This just confirms what a lot of us think. Sims 4 is more about the graphic and sets around the towns, NOT about gameplay. I mean, of course, I want a nice looking game, but what is the point of it if gameplay is shallow?
This is why they didn’t do a livestream. If the people who were holding onto the hope it might be good saw all this in a livestream they would have known how bad it was and known not to buy it. Feels bad as a Star Wars fan and as a Sims fan.
Feels like this release was heavily restricted by at least one corporate entity. IDK, EA usually just eats the criticism so I'm not sure it was all their call. Not at all. Just hard to get two corps to agree.

@@Gingeries17 I saw in a review that you can woohoo in the building where you change clothes and sleep. The animation is very tame, not even a kiss before going inside, just love hearts above the building.
So...Star Wars without the force,the aliens are sims wearing costumes and you travel there by taking a vacation...a theme park. At least we could fake force powers with occult sims...
Use alien occult apply to star wars mask. Make Jedi and sith spellcasters Use and book only specific for Jedi or sith style maybe. wield magic with hands no wands and brooms. Use lightsabers specific Jedi or sith Create own clones of troopers with trained fitness create group with chosen location for going to community lots or meeting up households purhaps with own these behaviour style groups with higher rank plus can have own work force to publish those books for empire for those troopers on same lot make sim richer. I'm sure those go through Jedi way have different approach for the town but leave that to those who follow Jedi way lol 😁 Change oasis springs into star wars theme or location ideal for textures of theme pack. Bottom line guess have to do what always done lacking packs in the passed do best we can with what we got. as for pc players I'm sure maybe able mod help build occult sure ve interest to see those with pack try do more with it.

It's basically just the Disney park- and I also hate the lightsaber shop there. They blatantly ripped off Oliver's wand shop at Universal's harry potter park but it doesn't make sense. You buy wands. The only people who buy light sabers in Star Wars are bad guys. You either climb a giant mountain on a snow planet or get given a lightsaber.
You can blame the sequel trilogy for that. I'm going, to be honest, I loved those movies because I love Star Wars, and I really think there was a lot of potential. Certain plot decisions took away from the movie, but if done correctly the sequel trilogy would have been so good. They lost a lot of momentum with Rey acquiring Luke's lightsaber, and one doesn't really feel that the moment it's turned on it means something, because they didn't think about it. There's also the movie scores, with them playing Luke and Leia's theme and the Force theme in wildly inappropriate places! The so-called "Force theme" isn't even the Force theme, yet every time we hear it we think of the Force!
Not at all. I keep saying this, on Origin TS4 is right next to SWTOR for me. Whenever I feel the urge to play a story based Star Wars game with customizable characters and vast neighborhoods to explore and story and missions, I click that game. When I want to play the sims....I CLICK THE SIMS. Why would I pay to put my other game in my first game?
I feel like of they'd have come at it from the position that your Sims got to go the Batuu part of the Disney theme park (like a family vaca or something), put in some photo booths, and a gift shop with post cards people would have received it so much better. The missions could have been "go ride such and such ride until your sim pukes," or "tour the memorabilia museum" or something like that. They could have brought back little trinkets and had 1 hidden mission to unlock this super duper light saber and had a moment with a real Jedi if your sim had an "Uberfan" trait or something.
Yeah, you'll get it. It's way better than Carl is presenting. I can make Batuu style sims immediatley. I can fill my home with Droids, sabers, and Batuu gear in a three day vacation. I can bring back 5 or 6 drink and food recipes per trip to batuu and never eat normal human food again. I can glare into a sith holocron and become filled with rage. I can practice with my saber and duel with my saber. I can chat with my droid or tinker with him and get some handy skill. The review is week. Trust me.
At least a Disney World pack would have been fun. It could have been a vacation pack with Star Wars themed hotels. But no, instead we get this obvious cash grab.
I really enjoyed Medieval Sims for what it was. It was NOT Sims 3 and since it was a stand alone game based on the same engine rather than some kind of wrenched-on-twisted-sister of a pack, I never minded that. That's what I thought as soon as this pack was announced. "Why isn't this a stand-alone like Medieval Sims was?" That's what it looks like. That is (from all the people I've watched playing it) it plays like. I might pay if was stand alone (ok it would have needed a lot more for a good stand-alone but then it would be better anyway!) NOT as a pack.
I think the whole problem with sims 4 is ANIMATION. I will explain why. It seems that sims team is planning only packs and expansions that dont require a lot of new animations. They are ALWAYS recycling everything, all the animations look the same. Why they are not giving us farms now? Imagine how many animations they will have to do. Disney parks? More animations. Hotels and resorts may be easier, but probably they would have to create brand new animations. Farming & country life? More depth and more animations. What we have new in terms of animations with Journey to Batuu? Nothing. I dont even know. This is just nonsense. Ea and sims team are killing this beautiful game. It is a SHAME. We need real improvements in this game, and not some star wars and alien bulls****. This is so wrong. There are so many things we need for a life Simulation. I feel that sims team lost the essence of the sims. They forgot that this is a life simulation and not a silly bolly billy stupid game for 3 year old children. I am not against star wars in the game, but only if it was after good, deep and meaningful expansions. A series of bad stuff, (one after another) game and expansion packs is just terrible. Not a single good thing we can say "WOW, now they nailed it". It is always "ah, ok". "Yeah, cute, but lacks gameplay". Edit: I am aware that animations alone don't make a game deeper, but maybe the criteria is making them come up with this horrible ideas such as star wars etc.

They've been recycling animations since Get to Work, and releasing packs with not much to do since Jungle Adventure. This is just the latest, most egregious example. FFS My First Pet Stuff had more going for it than this one.

Like... imagine a sports expansion with resorts etc. At least some animations. Idk. An update for relationships improvement maybe would be nice if they put new animations. They could make the game a bit deeper without it? Sure. For example creating new things such as making a kid sleep in their grandma house or making more complex relationships. No animation needed, but i still think that a part of the problem is the their lazyness or whatever to do them. Because it seems easier not to make them. And maybe they use this as a criteria for creating the packs
Gwencere and eventually you could move to the vacation spots. I don't know why it's not an option. The sims 4 isn't even open world so they could just teleport to work or school from Salvadorato or the rideless Star Wars theme park or whatever.
Yes. I'll be honest, I didn't love WA when it first came out, but upon playing it, I realized how much you could do there and you could move there and it felt like a part of the Sims. This is like a very watered down version of WA without all the good stuff. You can't even move there and build a life there. You can't really bring anything back from Batuu, either, so it's just there.
@@BooDotBoo it's not even a watered down version of WA really as all you can do in Battu are the simple missions that mostly involve txt adventures or your Sim talking to other sims. Only the last 2 missions of each faction and the aspiration involve infiltrating the enemies camp and they are easily completed and then that's the end of the packs game play. It doesn't reset on returning visits so do play again from the start you need to take a new sim. There are no side adventures, no skills, no crafting, growing, building...It's the shallowest pack I have ever played in the sims ever and an appalling waste of money and I'm saying this as a fan - I've played almost 9000hrs of Ts4
I am so over the lack of animations entering and exiting things in this game. I know animations take time but without them, it really breaks the immersion for me when it comes to the sims. The sims 2 had all these small things that blew me away when it was first released.
Yeah; Sims 2 was great! It's been downhill ever since. I liked the open world of Sims 3 but it had so many rabbit holes at first. I wish they'd just remake Sims 2 and update a few things and make the neighborhoods open world. I wouldn't mind a loading screen between different neighborhoods.
@@badgamerkat I wish they would give players the option based on their CPU capabilities. Open world vs. Neighborhoods and rabbit holes vs. Loading sceeens. Even realistic vs. Fantasy so if you want that game save to be realistic, you won't have unnatural sims like Father Winter or Vlad in that game but you can still use the build and buy items if you own the pack.
Especially since they're recycling so many animations! When a new pack is mainly made up of recycled animations and rabbit holes, it's a hard pass for me.
Carl, As a kid, your website was a godsend for me when I was first starting out with the Sims. I remember using your guide for everything! Skills, careers, cheats, lore. Your website was so helpful to me and I look back on those memories of playing the Sims 2 and 3 so so so fondly. It’s been so awesome to have you on youtube now! Your videos are just as helpful as your we site was. I wish Sims 4 could provide as many sweet memories as its predecessors but I guess this is just the hand we’ve been dealt. The only one who seems to be hiding any negative criticism is James Turner; he's just happy go lucky about the whole thing. But you can witness in his gameplay all the things going wrong, lol... He just doesn't comment on them, lol.
I'd agree, but I say it's not the best because I could never get over how Sims 3 sims looked and how all the hair was super stringy. Babies were also more limited in Sims 3. So, for those reasons, Sims 2 will always win out.

The issue is , I feel like people have began to start saying “Oh it’s just 20 dollars, what’s the big deal ?”. But I’ve been following Sims since my mother played the first Sims1. I’m now almost 26, and I have to many bills to keep dropping 20 dollars for something I really don’t want. At this point, if a new sims dlc doesn’t include a feature that can transfer to at least two other packs I bought, I’m not buying it. 🤷🏾♀️
If people did not weigh these things this way, I feel like at least some of the packs we have would be a little better. $20 can buy a lot now in the gaming world. A hundred+ hours of entertainment. It's all about priorities for each person, though.
I completely agree. Some people don’t have the ability to drop 20$ every so often. I haven’t Played the sims as long as you might have but this is quite ridiculous on their behalf (20$ packs no one really asked for).
And if I think back to ts2, a $20-30 pack would get you at least 3 ts4 packs worth of stuff. It just feels bad when we have experience with affordable, large, and meaningful packs in the sims, and yet, the sims team is kinda gaslighting us to think that this is all a $20-30 pack can do...

Well by this review this is an rushed gamepack. Shame I thought a Star Wars Collab would be an Expansion pack levels of gameplay, but this barely qualified as a stuff pack for sure.
Was it rushed, though? Like, they obviously had time to make it look good. I think EA/sims team knows how to make things look good, but they just do not know how to make any gameplay. And this pack really showed it. Probably also why we keep getting more storyline type packs. You don't need real gameplay, you just need a bunch of missions along with some type of story. Strangerville, at least, had it's own story, this pack expects you to know SW enough that they didn't really need to provide a story.
I feel like if it was just a stuff pack more people would buy it. It would be a bunch of star wars items and the "main item" could've been the lightsaber...I feel like it wouldn't have been received as badly. I mean, I would've bought it.
"build a toilet" should be a mission. idk anything about star wars but this seems like a somewhat long-term settlement? Proper sanitation should be a high priority.
I completely agree Carl, i live this review. I personally don’t believe it was wise to heavily rely on text based choose your own adventure style gameplay for a “simulation” game. This pack was hyped up to be “new and exiting” and “never been done before”. But all i see are the same shallow repetitive interactions. EA and Maxis really painted themselves into a corner with this pack. They should have in my opinion prioritised properly with the basics of the game first such as skintones, in-depth gameplay, improved babies, improved personalities, etc. if they did that they wouldn’t have been in the position of having an obligation of a paid promotion from Disney. One where I believe they HAD to release by a certain date. If the Sims 4 had a better foundation, a Niche Star Wars pack wouldn’t have received such negative backlash and the gameplay might have even been better. I have nothing against Star Wars or this pack, just EA’s and Maxis’ priorities.
It is funny how most of the things you mention should have been prioritized belong to updates not game packs. People need to understand that are different teams working on different aspects of the game and they do work in parallel. GP have their team(s), updates have their team(s) and so on. Moreover if we got any of the things you mention via a gamepack the people will rage against EA since those things saying "it should be in the basegame" "I should not be paying for X, Y or Z", and they would be right as those features and improvements should come in updates. I do agree that among all the possible options they had for a game pack they chose one of the worst and probably the deal with Disney is the one to blame. Same with what you say about the release date. To be honest the pack looks good aestheyically but not so good gameplay wise (as Carl showed in the video) To wrap up, before of getting on the "they should have prioritized X" train think 2 things: 1) there is more than one team and they all work in parallel in different projects, and 2) more than 1 thing can be prioritized if they belong to the responsabilities of different teams.
Christian Villavicencio They never said the “priorities” needed to be in a pack though, I’m pretty sure everyone mutually agrees that those things need to be in an update. The pack’s gameplay seems lazy to me, but to each their own.
@@lisaisa I did not said that either. My statement was about prioritizing this pack over other things the community wants. When they said they should have prioritized X (i.e. skintones... the popular of the moment) or Y thing over this gamepack they implied they are on the same pool of items to be prioritized == they fail to acknowledge they are completely different things that are even managed by different teams. I've seen this on many posts already. With regard to the pack... yeah. The moment I saw the trailer I thought this has 0 new gameplay. After watching this video and many others I confirmed my suspicions. I do want to have the full DLC collection but this one will wait for a sale
Christian Villavicencio I did forget that thank you for reminding that their are multiple teams and i understand that there are multiple projects being worked on all at the same time. But looking at the life span of the Sims 4 so far, to me personally it seems the main priorities for EA and Maxis have been these lack luster packs. They haven’t improved their foundation being the base game, substantially enough. Most of their people and resources don’t seem to be allocated properly in my opinion. It’s been 6 years and the basics (skintones, babies, etc) still haven’t been added to the game and it is obviously frustrating and the obligated release of this pack has amplified that frustration.

You people need something new to complain about (not saying that they are not needed, but it is funny how it is now on the MUST HAVE list when it was not there until a few months ago, on that 6 years lifespan). They allocate people to the things they think would give them more money, it is their business after all. Sure they have made many poor choices on some packs (this last one and the my first pet stuff were the worst decisions they made, fanbase wise). Sure, the game still lacks of some stuff I do want such as: babies not being objects and more gameplay that is not focused in the damn adults and their clones (aka. young adults and teenagers). Teenagers being different from YA (aside from the school thing and some stuff added on Parenthood... I had to use a mode to make them a bit smaller to differentiate), etc. But that is completely separated to what packs usually manage, it is update territory. People would rage if EA attempted to make them buy the "Improved babies game pack", and they will be right to be enraged. Sadly updates do not make people spend more money (at least not as much as packs do), so on EA's eyes => priority is on packs and more people is allocated to those teams. But the thing is that not listening to the community also hurts their sales, since releasing packs like this one (Star Wars) make people remember how many things they want in game and they don't have yet. Thing is this "complains pattern" has been repeated many times: first people wanted seasons and for EACH damn pack they released until seasons people complained about "I don't want X I want Seasons". Seasons got released and people was already complaining about they wanting University.The same thing happened until Uni was released. Now is skintones/cars/babies. Next will be flying pigs, Power Rangers, etc. If I learned something about Sims Community over my 20 years following the franchise is that simmers will never be happy, never. And the last TS4 packs released are not helping to reduce that "eternal unhappines" either.
It's really sad... as soon as a bought eco lifestyle I was so bored I stopped playing! How can a new pack make things even more boring lol Sims 3 or any other sims series is the saving grace!
*To me*, *personally*, it seems pretty clear EA only gave access to simmers who were "nice" about the pack, before it came out...Happened in other countries too.
They gave Plumbella early access after being vaguely optimistic-ish about the trailer, but she outright said the visual design of Bantuu was the *only* positive thing about the whole pack. But broadly yeah, they definitely gave it to people who weren't outright negative when it was announced.
Yes that’s exactly what they did and I find it nasty ... I find it weird how they have a EA Game Changers Program but they pick and choose who gets early access ... everyone isn’t gonna have a positive outlook on every pack they come out with & they should know that 💯 that whole program is a joke
depressed cockroach Lilsimsie made some comments in her videos criticizing Disney. She basically said it was wrong for them to reopen when Florida was in the midst of a massive outbreak. And honestly, she was correct. Disney attracts visitors from all over the world. And these tourists don’t just go to Disney, they may well show up at her supermarket or other places she frequents, putting Floridians at a greater risk. I bet Disney didn’t appreciate her comments and didn’t want her to have access.
Here's a funny thing for a Star Wars fan that have never played The Sims before: It actually gonna costs US$ 80 for them! (yes US$20 game pack but don't forget that US$ 60 base game requirement!) No wonder that this is "just" a game pack and not a spinoff. EA knew that the majority of Sims players are gonna hate this (mostly because we know how cheap they are and not about the theme itself) so they specifically targeted the naïve potential Star-Wars players, with some bonus from fanatic Sims and Star Wars fan that will buy this regardless.
My relationship with EA/Maxis feels like a long-running marriage. It started out hot and heavy, but over the years it just became more and more like both sides were just going through the motions. Personally I'm kinda making the side-eye at some other pretty games walking by out there and seriously thinking of some infidelity. Thanks for another great vid, Carl. Nice to have honest opinions out there still that aren't sucking up to either EA or the Star Wars Disney overlords.
That's not a long-running HEALTHY marriage, though. A healthy marriage would realize things are getting stale and work together to fix it. EA just keeps going as if their partner (simmers) just don't even exist, which would make it a toxic marriage, actually.
First pack I simply do not have a favorite thing. Not one. I dislike the droids as they are useless once home and not that much use in Batuu really. I completed all First Order missions and maxed the reputation level without even using a droid once. The lightsabers build fitness..but... once you've seen them in action it sorta loses it's appeal. It's a pretty world, maybe once I'm over the disappointment I might build in it...Had my sim been able to live in those cute little round fx homes and then do missions from there... well that might have really helped with my experience of the pack as then I could create a story as I play about my life there..not just a long series of fetch or txt quests/missions that really become very repetitive and boring very very quickly.
Strange story: I haven't played more than an hour in one go (often less) in Sims 4 for a while, but today, I started a new game in Sims 3 and before I had checked, the whole afternoon was gone. I'd completely forgotten about the opportunities there and I found just having my sim going about her business and getting on in the criminal career so much more interesting than playing Sims 4 with all the packs (I even had half of the Sims 3 packs I have, all expansions, turned off).
Sadly your sim is locked out of doing any animations or following any player given directions when they are caught in an 'enemy' camp. Your sim gets 'escorted' out and you can't stop or do anything else until you are through a loading screen and onto another lot. So the modder would need to also change that aspect.

@@karldotorg Disappointed? Yes. Shocked? No. Most of the things the players want (baby update, representation etc.) would have to be patched into the base game, and how would they charge for that? Apparently it's not enough that players have been paying for overpriced packs for years to give them a few updates of things that should have been in the game from the start. Or fix bugs. You're right, they don't listen, and their "communication" is really manipulative, just trying to keep players from leaving by keeping their hopes up.

I honestly hope this will severely affect the franchise so that they can realize they are actually doing more harm than good in the half-assed content they're giving us. After 70+ SPs, EPs, and GPs, i thought this would be the most complete and polished sims game in the franchise but it actually ended up being the blandest. Even the sims 2 on the psp is more fun that this.
@@karldotorg True, Sims 4 is the blandest of the series. The packs are getting lazier and lazier as far as gameplay is concerned, so I also hope this one crashes in sales. I'll do my part. ;) And since I got a new PC last year, I might give Sims 3 a go again and hope the thing handles it better than my last computer.
This is so sad. I might think that the best pack they’ve done this year was Tiny Living. I don’t feel like buying Nifty Knitting or Eco lifestyle. Eco lifestyle has a great concept and there was a time that i really wanted to purchase, but the broken gameplay kinda turned me off. Nifty is a joke and i don’t see anything slightly atractive for me to enjoy it.
I also kinda wanted to get Eco Lifestyle, especially after watching Simproved's builds and James Turner's LP, but the game already has so many glitches and bugs with the packs I already have that I only play it about twice a year maximum. :/ It's really disappointing to watch and experience my (and many other's) lifelong favorite game series falling apart right in front of our eyes. No other game has captured my attention in the same way that the Sims 1, 2, and 3 did and I feel as if we will never get that level of quality and attention to detail in TS4 unfortunately.
Eco Lifestyle was a huge disappointment. Yeah, some of the decorations and landscapes were nice, but the pollution system is difficult at best to manage, and I was looking forward to BUILDING things and CRAFTING things, not pressing magic buttons on a magic screen so a mysterious machine could grind away on an invisible piece of furniture mysteriously for an extraordinarily long period of time before teleporting it to my inventory. They couldn't even just add the stuff to the existing woodworking bench. That would have been good enough for TS4, considering what low standards and expectations we have by now. It's also buggy as hell and broke previous features, like kids learning adult skills after they maxed out the kid ones, which still isn't fixed. Are we tired of clay and white cakes yet, anyone? Bowls of half-made white cake everywhere and the N.A.P. wasn't even voted on. Neighbors just walking into my house and stealing my stuff and picking produce in my garden without permission. I had to fence everything off and lock all the gates and doors. Too much trouble. I've quit playing and switched to something else. EA gets no more of my money until they make something fun to play.
@@m0L3ify yes. I really hate the fabricator in Eco, it seems totally out of place and unenvironmental as it's obviously based on 3d printing (which uses plastic and concrete IRL). They should have made it industrial at least. There is no new or actual self sufficiency - fishing and gardening already being a thing. The recycler should have been a compost and I just don't get the juicing concept. I thought I would love Eco Lifestyle but I don't. Truthfully though I mostly wanted solar panels so that the off the grid trait (from the base game) would finally be worth it. I don't however think $50 aus dollars or an expansion pack was worth a solar panel though. (I did actually bundle eco, so it wasn't that much I paid but that's what it is full price in my country) It's made me very circumspect about all other packs I don't own. AND the glitches are horrendous - cakes everywhere! As for Star Wars I was never going to buy that - Star wars has been dead to me for some time and Sims 4 collab was not going to revive it. Even more certain (if possible) after Carl's review.
@@Miluielle 3D printing just doesn't make sense when you're dumpster diving and upcycling already used parts. The buy mode decor is influenced heavily by this concept. Burlap sack sofas and shipping crate houses, but suddenly we're 3D printing beds, tables, and bookcases? I honestly don't know what they were thinking. Also...the amount of love insects need to thrive in the game is astounding. They need more attention than Sim kids. Who knew insects were so socially needy that they needed to be held and talked to for 8 hours a day just to live? How did they ever survive before? The world may never know...

I agree... If we would have gotten some kind of Harry Potter pack on that expanded on the Wizards game play, (like sim kids and teens to go to wizard boarding school by using the college system or something like that...) I feel like I wouldn't have been as let down. It's also just such a waste that there are no lots in this world.
They should have just gone all out and turned the world into the theme park it should be. Having a theme park for families to visit would have been so much better.

When the devs released the sims 4 saying « we want you to creat your own story » I said it was a door for them to do crappy stuff like this. I got intense backlash bc I was apparently hating for no reason...cut to today...
Thank you for your honest review, Carl. From what it looks like to me, not making the Star Wars content part of the normal Sims gameplay was a huge mistake. It looks so completely separated that it might as well be a standalone game. I'm not a Star Wars fan but I would be so much more interested in this if it worked like Strangerville: a new neighbourhood where your Sims can live and do normal Sims things and do the mission content on the side, after work or on the weekends. They could have made an additional force-user occult type or at least a force skill, and SW content related careers. The lack of at least a new trait or anything more substantial that would add to normal Sims gameplay is an absolute deal breaker for me.
I know your comment wasn't aimed at everyone, but honestly never once have I doubted your reviews or the honesty behind your opinions, and I don't doubt you now. Thanks for going into the pack with an open mind and reviewing it with the depth that you did. I loved the little animation at the end and I can't wait for you to reach 1 million :)

As a Star Wars fan, this is even more disappointing to me. I wish they made the pack actually a journey to become a Jedi, because lightsabers are more meaningful than just what I saw here. Star Wars is more than droids and going around talking to bunch of people. They sure found a way to ruin the experience of Batuu for many of us. Very disappointing.
Read somewhere that this Stuff Pack being designed after Disneyland's Star Wars themed park. Which, funny enough, actually explains why the pack works the way it is. All the "Aliens" are just Humans in make ups, most of the city is a decorative facade, fractions are rather passive towards each other, all the activities are small and simple because it is just a theme park not another planet. You can't even hit someone with a lightsaber if they don't have one. It's just something I find funny, the stuff pack itself is a bigger dissapointment then I've imagined.
I actually think that it may be good that it is contained! I mean, townie’s in your uni campus or random people in the Magic Realm was immersion breaking for people I think. (Personally, I only have the Vampires Game Pack.).
It is very good that it is contained. But here's the thing, if that can be done for this pack then it can also be done for others i.e. Realm of Magic. Despite simmers asking for RoM to be contained it hasn't happened. Island Living was the first time we saw this sort of containment being included. At launch you never saw other sims from other worlds in Sulani.
Thanks for your honesty as usual, Carl. Despite being a Star Wars fan, I had no intention of buying this because it just doesn't belong in Sims 4.. Now I feel justified in not buying it from a poor gameplay perspective as well.
I was so disinterested and annoyed when this pack was announced that I redownloaded The Sims 3 and I have been having a really good time. The game has its problems, mainly performance and I have a pretty decent PC, but at least I am having fun and not wanted to create a new sim family every 1-3 sim weeks because i get bored like in TS4...
Just bear in mind Star Wars fans, this makes up almost 1/5th of the Star Wars games we have gotten in the last 6 years under EA/Disney. Star Wars fans didn't want this and neither did Sims fans, who is it for? EA's pockets :)

James even admitted up front he loves starwars and to be shamed because he found a part of it enjoyable isn't fair. Personally I'm only interested in the build buy stuff in most packs and this one screams steam punk themed builds to me which is something I enjoy alot a feel is missing from the game (I'm over making modern/old fashioned American homes and dying to make something interesting and this maybe an opportunity to do so. ) but it doesn't make everyone else's dislike in it invalid either.
The Sims is 19 years old. TS4 is 6 years old. That's almost a third of the franchise's lifespam. And it has 33 PACKS. They seriously need to drop TS4 and start working on Five.
I have a feeling TS5 will be solely online and filled with micro transactions. I've been playing The Sims since 2000 and I'm dreading TS5 because, based on the lack of effort we're getting from EA now, I think it will finally be what kills off the franchise.

Seeing a pack like this gives me the urge to learn to mod so badly. I see it having potential on a technical level. if the game is treating it like a completely seperate world and hopefully along with its assets, and modders figured out how to (kinda) clone worlds, it might be the catalyst to building custom mod worlds if one figures out what assets its dependent on and replaced.
I don't like storyline packs, so I knew this wouldn't be for me once I heard that it's pretty much a weird "needs hotel" and missions. It's not even as interesting as World Adventures, where you got a hotel you could stay at and do stuff and a city you could explore while also doing more sandbox type stuff there. This is literally just a base where you come do stuff and when you are done, you go home. I just don't see the replayability within that. Just thinking of it makes me bored. And the items and CAS, from other videos I've seen, leave a lot to be desired. A lot of it is huge and clunky and don't see to fit in well with other items, so I doubt I'd be using them. I do like that we finally get some more middle-eastern type head-wear, though, so that's something. The clothing isn't my style, so for me, there just isn't anything there. If people enjoy it, great, but this just... it's a beautiful backdrop/set to look at.
You know what expansion pack really could have used that needs boost while you're in the special pack-related content? Superstar. That was a very interesting pack but the most broken aspect of it was how fast your needs would decay in that game vs having to run around the superstar lots doing work.
If being a Jedi was a new lifestyle it at least would have been worth a try. Heck even upgrades to alien lifestate would draw me in. Maybe we'll at least get a mod that lets you build droids at the robot station. But until then it's a no from me.
I'm a gameplay focused simmer as well, I don't really understand not focusing on gameplay but apparently there's an audience for that. Anyway, I thought I'd set my sights low enough for this pack (I assumed it'd be a reskinned RoM where you could become a jedi and level up choosing either light or dark) and I apparently didn't set my expectations quite low enough. Last thing I bought was Tiny Living and when they announced Eco, I was out. I preordered the basegame for 70 dollars, I want to love it, and it's just so disappointing. Like I played TS2 until last year, I don't see this game having 15+ years worth of gameplay in it even for people who really love it.
First off, congrats on the 100K. You deserve the hype. You are a staple for the sims community. We'd struggle without your help. This review was informative and super fun to watch. They really should have given you the pack. Period. $37 WOW. I am so sorry. I enjoyed each of the 2 times I watched the Star Wars movies. It's a shame this pack feels so empty. I was kind of expecting it to, but still tried to hold onto hope it'd be ok at least. I think this will be the first pack I skip entirely, and I even got my first pet stuff. There's nothing in this pack that I'd see myself ever playing with more than once, and even then the content doesn't look engaging enough to be fun the first time. At the very least I wish you could use the force to choke people and stuff. That'd at least make my games where I bombard the game with mods like extreme violence and other dumb stuff more fun to goof around in. On an unrelated side note, I hate the current state of Star Wars. It seems like the only good content to come out of the Disney buyout is The Mandalorian and the single player Star Wars game that came out recently I forget the name of (haven't played it myself, but I've heard friends say it was good.)
For me its the lack of player housing on Batuu. The lack of a house means I cant do any of the normal sims things that takes up at least 50% of my time while playing, and so I only have to focus on mission which encourages me to complete them as quickly as possible, which then becomes annoying since it is awkward and repetitive to complete them. I want to be able to explore Batuu and rank up with whatever side I want while also having my normal sim job and a family to take care of - potentially even have my rank with a certain faction then have consequences for my sim's life - like getting raided by the first order if im a resistance member, and unlocking new cool furniture when I rank up. Having and building a house is a major part of the sims but since I cant actually build anything on Batuu I dont particularly feel the need to use any of the many, many new build items they added which is a real shame.
I'm just going to think of it as a them park for my sims to go to and do Star Wars-themed scavenger hunts. And I'm going to build all kinds of crazy stuff: Ships, robots, robot ships, space stations, mad scientist labs, etc. And my kids will have all the decorations and toys (maybe my adults, too).
And this was $20. For $5 you can buy Jedi Academy which not only offers more gameplay, more variety, more depth, more story, more everything but also has better graphics despite being considerably older than Sims 4. It's a fantastic game.

I know how you feel, not wanting to be so harsh with maxis but honestly this pack so random there was no way it was gonna be anything worthy. It sounds negative but for years players have asked for specific features then boom Star Wars 🤯 like what ?!...I don’t feel like much work was put into the game at all. Just clothes, a world and some objects not even real space creatures it’s just masks.
While I agree with everything in this video, I thought I'd put my two simoleons on what would make it better. First off, I don't mind that the sims in Batuu act like... well, sims. The missions, on the other hand, are something that definitely needed tweaking to make them less repetitive. Lightsabers and Droids need more utility outside of Batuu. like, with the Lightsabers, if another sim tries to start a fight, your sim would pull out their lightsaber, and the other sim would back off and you'd get a confidant moodlet. Or, the other sim could pull out their own lightsaber (which might run into the same issue of the Goth family becoming spellcasters, but uh) and you duel instead of fighting. Have an action your sim can do when angry, where they pull out their lightsaber and just swing it wildly around them a la Kylo Ren breaking everything when he gets enraged in Episode 7, and have it rapidly decrease angry moodlets in exchange for nearby objects being broken or burnt out. Also, non-force users have used lightsabers before in the movies, though they're not as good as force users. Droids could simply roam around and fix broken objects autonomously (or at your command before returning to your side), and you could chat with them, like talking to plants or with the robot from the Scientist Career. In fact, there needs to be more interaction with Batuu and, well, the rest of the game, like being able to convert credits to simoleons (but not vice versa); otherwise, it might as well be its own separate game and not a game pack. Force powers would have been good as well; simply have the light and dark side be different skills. Light side gets Force Speed and can do something similar to the vampire run, and can Force Meditate to regain Energy quickly without a bed (and possibly slowly regen other needs in the process). Dark side gets powers like Force Lightning, which is a reflavored Zipizap spell from Realm of Magic, and can use the force to break objects or something. Maybe have a high level in either skill to have a higher chance in lightsaber duels instead of just Athletics.
This reminds me of the reviews for the actual Galaxy’s Edge park. Looks like no one was happy with the park and the game pack based on the park. Hmm...

Thanks Carl. That was exactly what I was expecting. The Game Changers didn't really critique it properly. You always give a balanced critique and review. I will say about this years packs that Eco Lifestyle and Nifty Knitting really work well together and blend well with Tiny Living and Parenthood's decor. I think we need packs that blend really well with what we already have in the game.
Plus fixing the trashcan bug and the one that leaves skill building bars above a Sims head or the one that shows the wrong label above an item when you fly over it with the mouse and the stinky leaves one and the future cube/ball of clay one which I had to install mods to nix.
Edit: Also command routing for toddler care is the pits. The engine can't resolve actions so goes in a loop for ages.That also needs fixing.

It's preposterous is why I brought it up. I am reviewing a new pack, I play the new pack. If i can master caster in 1.5 or less hours its a problem to me. I expect at least 5 hours of gameplay for $20.

That's because Sims 4 is pretty low on gameplay. This just confirms what a lot of us think. Sims 4 is more about the graphic and sets around the towns, NOT about gameplay. I mean, of course, I want a nice looking game, but what is the point of it if gameplay is shallow?

I'm sure those go through Jedi way have different approach for the town but leave that to those who follow Jedi way lol 😁

It's basically just the Disney park- and I also hate the lightsaber shop there. They blatantly ripped off Oliver's wand shop at Universal's harry potter park but it doesn't make sense. You buy wands. The only people who buy light sabers in Star Wars are bad guys. You either climb a giant mountain on a snow planet or get given a lightsaber.

You can blame the sequel trilogy for that. I'm going, to be honest, I loved those movies because I love Star Wars, and I really think there was a lot of potential. Certain plot decisions took away from the movie, but if done correctly the sequel trilogy would have been so good. They lost a lot of momentum with Rey acquiring Luke's lightsaber, and one doesn't really feel that the moment it's turned on it means something, because they didn't think about it. There's also the movie scores, with them playing Luke and Leia's theme and the Force theme in wildly inappropriate places! The so-called "Force theme" isn't even the Force theme, yet every time we hear it we think of the Force!

Not at all. I keep saying this, on Origin TS4 is right next to SWTOR for me. Whenever I feel the urge to play a story based Star Wars game with customizable characters and vast neighborhoods to explore and story and missions, I click that game. When I want to play the sims....I CLICK THE SIMS. Why would I pay to put my other game in my first game?

I feel like of they'd have come at it from the position that your Sims got to go the Batuu part of the Disney theme park (like a family vaca or something), put in some photo booths, and a gift shop with post cards people would have received it so much better. The missions could have been "go ride such and such ride until your sim pukes," or "tour the memorabilia museum" or something like that. They could have brought back little trinkets and had 1 hidden mission to unlock this super duper light saber and had a moment with a real Jedi if your sim had an "Uberfan" trait or something.
Yeah, you'll get it. It's way better than Carl is presenting. I can make Batuu style sims immediatley. I can fill my home with Droids, sabers, and Batuu gear in a three day vacation. I can bring back 5 or 6 drink and food recipes per trip to batuu and never eat normal human food again. I can glare into a sith holocron and become filled with rage. I can practice with my saber and duel with my saber. I can chat with my droid or tinker with him and get some handy skill. The review is week. Trust me.

I really enjoyed Medieval Sims for what it was. It was NOT Sims 3 and since it was a stand alone game based on the same engine rather than some kind of wrenched-on-twisted-sister of a pack, I never minded that. That's what I thought as soon as this pack was announced. "Why isn't this a stand-alone like Medieval Sims was?" That's what it looks like. That is (from all the people I've watched playing it) it plays like. I might pay if was stand alone (ok it would have needed a lot more for a good stand-alone but then it would be better anyway!) NOT as a pack.

I think the whole problem with sims 4 is ANIMATION. I will explain why. It seems that sims team is planning only packs and expansions that dont require a lot of new animations. They are ALWAYS recycling everything, all the animations look the same. Why they are not giving us farms now? Imagine how many animations they will have to do. Disney parks? More animations. Hotels and resorts may be easier, but probably they would have to create brand new animations. Farming & country life? More depth and more animations.
What we have new in terms of animations with Journey to Batuu? Nothing. I dont even know. This is just nonsense. Ea and sims team are killing this beautiful game. It is a SHAME. We need real improvements in this game, and not some star wars and alien bulls****. This is so wrong. There are so many things we need for a life Simulation. I feel that sims team lost the essence of the sims. They forgot that this is a life simulation and not a silly bolly billy stupid game for 3 year old children. I am not against star wars in the game, but only if it was after good, deep and meaningful expansions. A series of bad stuff, (one after another) game and expansion packs is just terrible. Not a single good thing we can say "WOW, now they nailed it". It is always "ah, ok". "Yeah, cute, but lacks gameplay".
Edit: I am aware that animations alone don't make a game deeper, but maybe the criteria is making them come up with this horrible ideas such as star wars etc.

They've been recycling animations since Get to Work, and releasing packs with not much to do since Jungle Adventure. This is just the latest, most egregious example. FFS My First Pet Stuff had more going for it than this one.

Like... imagine a sports expansion with resorts etc. At least some animations. Idk. An update for relationships improvement maybe would be nice if they put new animations. They could make the game a bit deeper without it? Sure. For example creating new things such as making a kid sleep in their grandma house or making more complex relationships. No animation needed, but i still think that a part of the problem is the their lazyness or whatever to do them. Because it seems easier not to make them. And maybe they use this as a criteria for creating the packs

Yes. I'll be honest, I didn't love WA when it first came out, but upon playing it, I realized how much you could do there and you could move there and it felt like a part of the Sims. This is like a very watered down version of WA without all the good stuff. You can't even move there and build a life there. You can't really bring anything back from Batuu, either, so it's just there.
@@BooDotBoo it's not even a watered down version of WA really as all you can do in Battu are the simple missions that mostly involve txt adventures or your Sim talking to other sims. Only the last 2 missions of each faction and the aspiration involve infiltrating the enemies camp and they are easily completed and then that's the end of the packs game play. It doesn't reset on returning visits so do play again from the start you need to take a new sim. There are no side adventures, no skills, no crafting, growing, building...It's the shallowest pack I have ever played in the sims ever and an appalling waste of money and I'm saying this as a fan - I've played almost 9000hrs of Ts4

I am so over the lack of animations entering and exiting things in this game. I know animations take time but without them, it really breaks the immersion for me when it comes to the sims. The sims 2 had all these small things that blew me away when it was first released.
Exactly. Even the little things like getting the silverware from the drawer. Nice little details that kept things realistic.
Yeah; Sims 2 was great! It's been downhill ever since. I liked the open world of Sims 3 but it had so many rabbit holes at first. I wish they'd just remake Sims 2 and update a few things and make the neighborhoods open world. I wouldn't mind a loading screen between different neighborhoods.
@@badgamerkat I wish they would give players the option based on their CPU capabilities. Open world vs. Neighborhoods and rabbit holes vs. Loading sceeens. Even realistic vs. Fantasy so if you want that game save to be realistic, you won't have unnatural sims like Father Winter or Vlad in that game but you can still use the build and buy items if you own the pack.
Especially since they're recycling so many animations! When a new pack is mainly made up of recycled animations and rabbit holes, it's a hard pass for me.

As a kid, your website was a godsend for me when I was first starting out with the Sims. I remember using your guide for everything! Skills, careers, cheats, lore. Your website was so helpful to me and I look back on those memories of playing the Sims 2 and 3 so so so fondly.

I've watched so many now, and they all seem genuine, both approving and disapproving. The only one who seems to be hiding any negative criticism is James Turner; he's just happy go lucky about the whole thing. But you can witness in his gameplay all the things going wrong, lol... He just doesn't comment on them, lol.

I'd agree, but I say it's not the best because I could never get over how Sims 3 sims looked and how all the hair was super stringy. Babies were also more limited in Sims 3. So, for those reasons, Sims 2 will always win out.

But seriously , I love when you are seriously in depth of these reviews. The issue is , I feel like people have began to start saying “Oh it’s just 20 dollars, what’s the big deal ?”.
But I’ve been following Sims since my mother played the first Sims1. I’m now almost 26, and I have to many bills to keep dropping 20 dollars for something I really don’t want.
At this point, if a new sims dlc doesn’t include a feature that can transfer to at least two other packs I bought, I’m not buying it. 🤷🏾♀️
If people did not weigh these things this way, I feel like at least some of the packs we have would be a little better. $20 can buy a lot now in the gaming world. A hundred+ hours of entertainment. It's all about priorities for each person, though.
I completely agree. Some people don’t have the ability to drop 20$ every so often. I haven’t Played the sims as long as you might have but this is quite ridiculous on their behalf (20$ packs no one really asked for).

Was it rushed, though? Like, they obviously had time to make it look good. I think EA/sims team knows how to make things look good, but they just do not know how to make any gameplay. And this pack really showed it. Probably also why we keep getting more storyline type packs. You don't need real gameplay, you just need a bunch of missions along with some type of story. Strangerville, at least, had it's own story, this pack expects you to know SW enough that they didn't really need to provide a story.
I feel like if it was just a stuff pack more people would buy it. It would be a bunch of star wars items and the "main item" could've been the lightsaber...I feel like it wouldn't have been received as badly. I mean, I would've bought it.

I completely agree Carl, i live this review. I personally don’t believe it was wise to heavily rely on text based choose your own adventure style gameplay for a “simulation” game.
This pack was hyped up to be “new and exiting” and “never been done before”. But all i see are the same shallow repetitive interactions.
EA and Maxis really painted themselves into a corner with this pack. They should have in my opinion prioritised properly with the basics of the game first such as skintones, in-depth gameplay, improved babies, improved personalities, etc. if they did that they wouldn’t have been in the position of having an obligation of a paid promotion from Disney. One where I believe they HAD to release by a certain date. If the Sims 4 had a better foundation, a Niche Star Wars pack wouldn’t have received such negative backlash and the gameplay might have even been better.
I have nothing against Star Wars or this pack, just EA’s and Maxis’ priorities.
It is funny how most of the things you mention should have been prioritized belong to updates not game packs. People need to understand that are different teams working on different aspects of the game and they do work in parallel. GP have their team(s), updates have their team(s) and so on.
Moreover if we got any of the things you mention via a gamepack the people will rage against EA since those things saying "it should be in the basegame" "I should not be paying for X, Y or Z", and they would be right as those features and improvements should come in updates.
I do agree that among all the possible options they had for a game pack they chose one of the worst and probably the deal with Disney is the one to blame. Same with what you say about the release date. To be honest the pack looks good aestheyically but not so good gameplay wise (as Carl showed in the video)
To wrap up, before of getting on the "they should have prioritized X" train think 2 things: 1) there is more than one team and they all work in parallel in different projects, and 2) more than 1 thing can be prioritized if they belong to the responsabilities of different teams.

With regard to the pack... yeah. The moment I saw the trailer I thought this has 0 new gameplay. After watching this video and many others I confirmed my suspicions. I do want to have the full DLC collection but this one will wait for a sale

But looking at the life span of the Sims 4 so far, to me personally it seems the main priorities for EA and Maxis have been these lack luster packs. They haven’t improved their foundation being the base game, substantially enough.
Most of their people and resources don’t seem to be allocated properly in my opinion. It’s been 6 years and the basics (skintones, babies, etc) still haven’t been added to the game and it is obviously frustrating and the obligated release of this pack has amplified that frustration.

They allocate people to the things they think would give them more money, it is their business after all. Sure they have made many poor choices on some packs (this last one and the my first pet stuff were the worst decisions they made, fanbase wise).
Sure, the game still lacks of some stuff I do want such as: babies not being objects and more gameplay that is not focused in the damn adults and their clones (aka. young adults and teenagers). Teenagers being different from YA (aside from the school thing and some stuff added on Parenthood... I had to use a mode to make them a bit smaller to differentiate), etc. But that is completely separated to what packs usually manage, it is update territory. People would rage if EA attempted to make them buy the "Improved babies game pack", and they will be right to be enraged.
Sadly updates do not make people spend more money (at least not as much as packs do), so on EA's eyes => priority is on packs and more people is allocated to those teams. But the thing is that not listening to the community also hurts their sales, since releasing packs like this one (Star Wars) make people remember how many things they want in game and they don't have yet.
Thing is this "complains pattern" has been repeated many times: first people wanted seasons and for EACH damn pack they released until seasons people complained about "I don't want X I want Seasons". Seasons got released and people was already complaining about they wanting University.The same thing happened until Uni was released. Now is skintones/cars/babies. Next will be flying pigs, Power Rangers, etc.
If I learned something about Sims Community over my 20 years following the franchise is that simmers will never be happy, never. And the last TS4 packs released are not helping to reduce that "eternal unhappines" either.
I was so disinterested in this new pack that I bought some packs for sims 3 and have been playing for days nonstop 😁.

They gave Plumbella early access after being vaguely optimistic-ish about the trailer, but she outright said the visual design of Bantuu was the *only* positive thing about the whole pack.
But broadly yeah, they definitely gave it to people who weren't outright negative when it was announced.

And honestly, she was correct. Disney attracts visitors from all over the world. And these tourists don’t just go to Disney, they may well show up at her supermarket or other places she frequents, putting Floridians at a greater risk. I bet Disney didn’t appreciate her comments and didn’t want her to have access.

Here's a funny thing for a Star Wars fan that have never played The Sims before: It actually gonna costs US$ 80 for them! (yes US$20 game pack but don't forget that US$ 60 base game requirement!)
No wonder that this is "just" a game pack and not a spinoff. EA knew that the majority of Sims players are gonna hate this (mostly because we know how cheap they are and not about the theme itself) so they specifically targeted the naïve potential Star-Wars players, with some bonus from fanatic Sims and Star Wars fan that will buy this regardless.
Also making a spinoff would require them to flesh it out more to make a full standalone game but of course they'd take the cheapest route.

Carl, I seriously value your reviews. I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to buy this pack but you just hammered the nail into the coffin.
My relationship with EA/Maxis feels like a long-running marriage. It started out hot and heavy, but over the years it just became more and more like both sides were just going through the motions. Personally I'm kinda making the side-eye at some other pretty games walking by out there and seriously thinking of some infidelity.
Thanks for another great vid, Carl. Nice to have honest opinions out there still that aren't sucking up to either EA or the Star Wars Disney overlords.
That's not a long-running HEALTHY marriage, though. A healthy marriage would realize things are getting stale and work together to fix it. EA just keeps going as if their partner (simmers) just don't even exist, which would make it a toxic marriage, actually.

First pack I simply do not have a favorite thing. Not one. I dislike the droids as they are useless once home and not that much use in Batuu really. I completed all First Order missions and maxed the reputation level without even using a droid once. The lightsabers build fitness..but... once you've seen them in action it sorta loses it's appeal. It's a pretty world, maybe once I'm over the disappointment I might build in it...Had my sim been able to live in those cute little round fx homes and then do missions from there... well that might have really helped with my experience of the pack as then I could create a story as I play about my life there..not just a long series of fetch or txt quests/missions that really become very repetitive and boring very very quickly.

Strange story: I haven't played more than an hour in one go (often less) in Sims 4 for a while, but today, I started a new game in Sims 3 and before I had checked, the whole afternoon was gone. I'd completely forgotten about the opportunities there and I found just having my sim going about her business and getting on in the criminal career so much more interesting than playing Sims 4 with all the packs (I even had half of the Sims 3 packs I have, all expansions, turned off).
When i get caught in the ENEMY'S BASE, I will use Extreme Violence to them.

Sadly your sim is locked out of doing any animations or following any player given directions when they are caught in an 'enemy' camp. Your sim gets 'escorted' out and you can't stop or do anything else until you are through a loading screen and onto another lot. So the modder would need to also change that aspect.

@@karldotorg Disappointed? Yes. Shocked? No. Most of the things the players want (baby update, representation etc.) would have to be patched into the base game, and how would they charge for that? Apparently it's not enough that players have been paying for overpriced packs for years to give them a few updates of things that should have been in the game from the start. Or fix bugs. You're right, they don't listen, and their "communication" is really manipulative, just trying to keep players from leaving by keeping their hopes up.

After 70+ SPs, EPs, and GPs, i thought this would be the most complete and polished sims game in the franchise but it actually ended up being the blandest. Even the sims 2 on the psp is more fun that this.
@@karldotorg True, Sims 4 is the blandest of the series. The packs are getting lazier and lazier as far as gameplay is concerned, so I also hope this one crashes in sales. I'll do my part. ;) And since I got a new PC last year, I might give Sims 3 a go again and hope the thing handles it better than my last computer.
This is so sad. I might think that the best pack they’ve done this year was Tiny Living. I don’t feel like buying Nifty Knitting or Eco lifestyle. Eco lifestyle has a great concept and there was a time that i really wanted to purchase, but the broken gameplay kinda turned me off. Nifty is a joke and i don’t see anything slightly atractive for me to enjoy it.
I wish I had bought eco living instead of nifty knitting. Though truthfully I probably would have been just as well off not buying either
I also kinda wanted to get Eco Lifestyle, especially after watching Simproved's builds and James Turner's LP, but the game already has so many glitches and bugs with the packs I already have that I only play it about twice a year maximum. :/
It's really disappointing to watch and experience my (and many other's) lifelong favorite game series falling apart right in front of our eyes. No other game has captured my attention in the same way that the Sims 1, 2, and 3 did and I feel as if we will never get that level of quality and attention to detail in TS4 unfortunately.
Eco Lifestyle was a huge disappointment. Yeah, some of the decorations and landscapes were nice, but the pollution system is difficult at best to manage, and I was looking forward to BUILDING things and CRAFTING things, not pressing magic buttons on a magic screen so a mysterious machine could grind away on an invisible piece of furniture mysteriously for an extraordinarily long period of time before teleporting it to my inventory. They couldn't even just add the stuff to the existing woodworking bench. That would have been good enough for TS4, considering what low standards and expectations we have by now. It's also buggy as hell and broke previous features, like kids learning adult skills after they maxed out the kid ones, which still isn't fixed. Are we tired of clay and white cakes yet, anyone? Bowls of half-made white cake everywhere and the N.A.P. wasn't even voted on. Neighbors just walking into my house and stealing my stuff and picking produce in my garden without permission. I had to fence everything off and lock all the gates and doors. Too much trouble. I've quit playing and switched to something else. EA gets no more of my money until they make something fun to play.
@@m0L3ify yes. I really hate the fabricator in Eco, it seems totally out of place and unenvironmental as it's obviously based on 3d printing (which uses plastic and concrete IRL). They should have made it industrial at least. There is no new or actual self sufficiency - fishing and gardening already being a thing. The recycler should have been a compost and I just don't get the juicing concept. I thought I would love Eco Lifestyle but I don't. Truthfully though I mostly wanted solar panels so that the off the grid trait (from the base game) would finally be worth it. I don't however think $50 aus dollars or an expansion pack was worth a solar panel though. (I did actually bundle eco, so it wasn't that much I paid but that's what it is full price in my country) It's made me very circumspect about all other packs I don't own. AND the glitches are horrendous - cakes everywhere!
As for Star Wars I was never going to buy that - Star wars has been dead to me for some time and Sims 4 collab was not going to revive it. Even more certain (if possible) after Carl's review.
@@Miluielle 3D printing just doesn't make sense when you're dumpster diving and upcycling already used parts. The buy mode decor is influenced heavily by this concept. Burlap sack sofas and shipping crate houses, but suddenly we're 3D printing beds, tables, and bookcases? I honestly don't know what they were thinking.
Also...the amount of love insects need to thrive in the game is astounding. They need more attention than Sim kids. Who knew insects were so socially needy that they needed to be held and talked to for 8 hours a day just to live? How did they ever survive before? The world may never know...

I agree... If we would have gotten some kind of Harry Potter pack on that expanded on the Wizards game play, (like sim kids and teens to go to wizard boarding school by using the college system or something like that...) I feel like I wouldn't have been as let down.

I didn’t think the pack was going to fit my style of play at all even through I did for a sec wonder whether to get it on sale just to cas-up my alien and spell caster sims. When the devs released the sims 4 saying « we want you to creat your own story » I said it was a door for them to do crappy stuff like this. I got intense backlash bc I was apparently hating for no reason...cut to today...

From what it looks like to me, not making the Star Wars content part of the normal Sims gameplay was a huge mistake. It looks so completely separated that it might as well be a standalone game.
I'm not a Star Wars fan but I would be so much more interested in this if it worked like Strangerville: a new neighbourhood where your Sims can live and do normal Sims things and do the mission content on the side, after work or on the weekends. They could have made an additional force-user occult type or at least a force skill, and SW content related careers. The lack of at least a new trait or anything more substantial that would add to normal Sims gameplay is an absolute deal breaker for me.

Should have titled this pack Journey to Boredom.
It is about as hollow as Rey's character throughout the trilogy.
As a Star Wars fan, this is even more disappointing to me. I wish they made the pack actually a journey to become a Jedi, because lightsabers are more meaningful than just what I saw here. Star Wars is more than droids and going around talking to bunch of people.
They sure found a way to ruin the experience of Batuu for many of us.

Read somewhere that this Stuff Pack being designed after Disneyland's Star Wars themed park. Which, funny enough, actually explains why the pack works the way it is. All the "Aliens" are just Humans in make ups, most of the city is a decorative facade, fractions are rather passive towards each other, all the activities are small and simple because it is just a theme park not another planet. You can't even hit someone with a lightsaber if they don't have one.
It's just something I find funny, the stuff pack itself is a bigger dissapointment then I've imagined.
Worse it's not even a stuff pack, it's a gamepack D;
The Sims 4 is INCAPABLE of providing an immersive experience.
I actually think that it may be good that it is contained! I mean, townie’s in your uni campus or random people in the Magic Realm was immersion breaking for people I think. (Personally, I only have the Vampires Game Pack.).
It is very good that it is contained. But here's the thing, if that can be done for this pack then it can also be done for others i.e. Realm of Magic. Despite simmers asking for RoM to be contained it hasn't happened. Island Living was the first time we saw this sort of containment being included. At launch you never saw other sims from other worlds in Sulani.

Thanks for your honesty as usual, Carl. Despite being a Star Wars fan, I had no intention of buying this because it just doesn't belong in Sims 4.. Now I feel justified in not buying it from a poor gameplay perspective as well.
I was so disinterested and annoyed when this pack was announced that I redownloaded The Sims 3 and I have been having a really good time. The game has its problems, mainly performance and I have a pretty decent PC, but at least I am having fun and not wanted to create a new sim family every 1-3 sim weeks because i get bored like in TS4...

Just bear in mind Star Wars fans, this makes up almost 1/5th of the Star Wars games we have gotten in the last 6 years under EA/Disney. Star Wars fans didn't want this and neither did Sims fans, who is it for? EA's pockets :)

James even admitted up front he loves starwars and to be shamed because he found a part of it enjoyable isn't fair. Personally I'm only interested in the build buy stuff in most packs and this one screams steam punk themed builds to me which is something I enjoy alot a feel is missing from the game (I'm over making modern/old fashioned American homes and dying to make something interesting and this maybe an opportunity to do so. ) but it doesn't make everyone else's dislike in it invalid either.
They're just squeaking out all the last bit of cash they can get out of sims 4, squeezing on our wallets. I'll just wait for Sims 5

The Sims is 19 years old. TS4 is 6 years old. That's almost a third of the franchise's lifespam. And it has 33 PACKS. They seriously need to drop TS4 and start working on Five.
I have a feeling TS5 will be solely online and filled with micro transactions. I've been playing The Sims since 2000 and I'm dreading TS5 because, based on the lack of effort we're getting from EA now, I think it will finally be what kills off the franchise.

Seeing a pack like this gives me the urge to learn to mod so badly. I see it having potential on a technical level.
if the game is treating it like a completely seperate world and hopefully along with its assets, and modders figured out how to (kinda) clone worlds, it might be the catalyst to building custom mod worlds if one figures out what assets its dependent on and replaced.
I don't like storyline packs, so I knew this wouldn't be for me once I heard that it's pretty much a weird "needs hotel" and missions. It's not even as interesting as World Adventures, where you got a hotel you could stay at and do stuff and a city you could explore while also doing more sandbox type stuff there. This is literally just a base where you come do stuff and when you are done, you go home. I just don't see the replayability within that. Just thinking of it makes me bored. And the items and CAS, from other videos I've seen, leave a lot to be desired. A lot of it is huge and clunky and don't see to fit in well with other items, so I doubt I'd be using them. I do like that we finally get some more middle-eastern type head-wear, though, so that's something. The clothing isn't my style, so for me, there just isn't anything there.
If people enjoy it, great, but this just... it's a beautiful backdrop/set to look at.

You know what expansion pack really could have used that needs boost while you're in the special pack-related content? Superstar. That was a very interesting pack but the most broken aspect of it was how fast your needs would decay in that game vs having to run around the superstar lots doing work.
If being a Jedi was a new lifestyle it at least would have been worth a try. Heck even upgrades to alien lifestate would draw me in. Maybe we'll at least get a mod that lets you build droids at the robot station. But until then it's a no from me.
I'm a gameplay focused simmer as well, I don't really understand not focusing on gameplay but apparently there's an audience for that. Anyway, I thought I'd set my sights low enough for this pack (I assumed it'd be a reskinned RoM where you could become a jedi and level up choosing either light or dark) and I apparently didn't set my expectations quite low enough. Last thing I bought was Tiny Living and when they announced Eco, I was out. I preordered the basegame for 70 dollars, I want to love it, and it's just so disappointing. Like I played TS2 until last year, I don't see this game having 15+ years worth of gameplay in it even for people who really love it.
First off, congrats on the 100K. You deserve the hype. You are a staple for the sims community. We'd struggle without your help. This review was informative and super fun to watch. They really should have given you the pack. Period. $37 WOW. I am so sorry. I enjoyed each of the 2 times I watched the Star Wars movies. And all the hours I played Lego Star Wars with my youngest son. Not sure I'm going to enjoy playing this vacay SW alone. Thanks again.
It's a shame this pack feels so empty. I was kind of expecting it to, but still tried to hold onto hope it'd be ok at least. I think this will be the first pack I skip entirely, and I even got my first pet stuff. There's nothing in this pack that I'd see myself ever playing with more than once, and even then the content doesn't look engaging enough to be fun the first time. At the very least I wish you could use the force to choke people and stuff. That'd at least make my games where I bombard the game with mods like extreme violence and other dumb stuff more fun to goof around in.
On an unrelated side note, I hate the current state of Star Wars. It seems like the only good content to come out of the Disney buyout is The Mandalorian and the single player Star Wars game that came out recently I forget the name of (haven't played it myself, but I've heard friends say it was good.)
For me its the lack of player housing on Batuu. The lack of a house means I cant do any of the normal sims things that takes up at least 50% of my time while playing, and so I only have to focus on mission which encourages me to complete them as quickly as possible, which then becomes annoying since it is awkward and repetitive to complete them. I want to be able to explore Batuu and rank up with whatever side I want while also having my normal sim job and a family to take care of - potentially even have my rank with a certain faction then have consequences for my sim's life - like getting raided by the first order if im a resistance member, and unlocking new cool furniture when I rank up. Having and building a house is a major part of the sims but since I cant actually build anything on Batuu I dont particularly feel the need to use any of the many, many new build items they added which is a real shame.

I'm just going to think of it as a them park for my sims to go to and do Star Wars-themed scavenger hunts. And I'm going to build all kinds of crazy stuff: Ships, robots, robot ships, space stations, mad scientist labs, etc. And my kids will have all the decorations and toys (maybe my adults, too).

For $5 you can buy Jedi Academy which not only offers more gameplay, more variety, more depth, more story, more everything but also has better graphics despite being considerably older than Sims 4. It's a fantastic game.
The lightsabers seem to be the only viable feature… but even then, that's mostly due to the game's general lack of hobbies.

I know how you feel, not wanting to be so harsh with maxis but honestly this pack so random there was no way it was gonna be anything worthy. It sounds negative but for years players have asked for specific features then boom Star Wars 🤯 like what ?!...I don’t feel like much work was put into the game at all. Just clothes, a world and some objects not even real space creatures it’s just masks.
While I agree with everything in this video, I thought I'd put my two simoleons on what would make it better. First off, I don't mind that the sims in Batuu act like... well, sims. The missions, on the other hand, are something that definitely needed tweaking to make them less repetitive.
Lightsabers and Droids need more utility outside of Batuu. like, with the Lightsabers, if another sim tries to start a fight, your sim would pull out their lightsaber, and the other sim would back off and you'd get a confidant moodlet. Or, the other sim could pull out their own lightsaber (which might run into the same issue of the Goth family becoming spellcasters, but uh) and you duel instead of fighting. Have an action your sim can do when angry, where they pull out their lightsaber and just swing it wildly around them a la Kylo Ren breaking everything when he gets enraged in Episode 7, and have it rapidly decrease angry moodlets in exchange for nearby objects being broken or burnt out. Also, non-force users have used lightsabers before in the movies, though they're not as good as force users.
Droids could simply roam around and fix broken objects autonomously (or at your command before returning to your side), and you could chat with them, like talking to plants or with the robot from the Scientist Career. In fact, there needs to be more interaction with Batuu and, well, the rest of the game, like being able to convert credits to simoleons (but not vice versa); otherwise, it might as well be its own separate game and not a game pack.
Force powers would have been good as well; simply have the light and dark side be different skills. Light side gets Force Speed and can do something similar to the vampire run, and can Force Meditate to regain Energy quickly without a bed (and possibly slowly regen other needs in the process). Dark side gets powers like Force Lightning, which is a reflavored Zipizap spell from Realm of Magic, and can use the force to break objects or something. Maybe have a high level in either skill to have a higher chance in lightsaber duels instead of just Athletics.
This reminds me of the reviews for the actual Galaxy’s Edge park. Looks like no one was happy with the park and the game pack based on the park. Hmm...
