Heavyweight listener here! The song and band is amazing, I love discovering music thanks to podcasts
After almost 20 years of listening to the Weakerthans I think this song has become my favorite. In a crowded room.
Thanks Jonathan Goldstein. This song is the best.
welcome to heavyweight
I can't tell if it's because of my associations with Heavyweight or the song itself but this song makes me feel so at peace.
I know!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m so used to 1.5 speed tho 😂
I still have this dream that one day I pass a tiny little leaflet glued to a lamppost on my bike route to work announcing a concert somewhere on this planet. I´d cross any ocean for this. Saw them in my hometown in Cologne some years ago and it is still one of the finest concerts I´ve been to in my life. Missing their eloquence and depth.
Folks who don't understand the vid: Weakerthans hail from Winnipeg & are passionate about their hometown and the issues that face it. I am from Winnipeg & I still love the city and long for it - tho I love where I live now also. The video addresses how the quality of living in the North End district of the city is deteriorating and shows a vignette of how one person might be affected and thus affect others.
So nice of Jonathan Goldstein to find musicians and form a band to write a song that he'd use in a podcast years down the line.
My parents moved a lot and it always hurt. This song brings back that pain. I remember I was 14 when I first heard it, I had just moved out to the middle of nowhere, it made me cry. Love it though :)
Thanks Heavyweight for bringing me here every so often 💕
Sadly, the Weakerthans will be remembered like all those "unremembered" bands like big star and the replacements!
I've loved this song as a "moving house" song for years. Tonight I was searching for it and found there's also an Edward Hopper painting of the same name that is about 80% the sun in an empty room that I imagine when I hear the song and this only makes it more perfect.
Heavyweight podcast 🙌🏿🙌🏿
Heavyweight brought me here :) Love this song (though mostly at 1,1 x speed)
Ha!! That's how I found this song also!! Love Heavyweight podcast, dig the intro
same :)
Same.
saaaaame
I listen to it at 1.5x so it seems so odd listening to it at its intended speed.
the weakerthans will never be forgotten
Propagandhi/Weakerthans conduit for lYfe. This is lyrically and musically one of the saddest songs I've ever heard and I can't stop listening to it. This video.. it's a hard watch. A beautifully sad one, yet rage inducing. Thanks to you, The Weakerthans
I was the little girl who played baseball, the kid who catches the ball if the person at home base misses. The dude behind me was my father. 😂 I was 7 or younger. The good old days.
Emily Kuchiki My old account lmao. I had terrible spelling.
Emily Adams So what’s the backstory on the video? The band decided to shoot a video there and you were already there playing? I love the song, only heard about it because of Heavyweight. It kind of reminds me of death cab for cutie.
Junkyard Dave They hired us to play baseball for the music video. I wasn’t actually told about the shoot, I was about grade 2? My brother, dad and I were all in the video. It was my actual team, my mom set the whole thing up, the people on the stands were the actual parents of the team. (As I can remember. Also, oops long reply. I really should stop forgetting my account passwords.) caught me by surprise when they started “fighting.”
I thank you (from America here) for them any many others! Go Canadian music!
How it feels to spend a life in the restaurant industry ... a lifetime of people growing “close like family” then scattering to the wind.
The Weakerthans really use music to it's full potential, they are so good.
Man the weakerthans... greatest break up music ever.
Got me through some bad ones, for sure. Thanks for that guys.
I'm new to this band and whoa I love this song!
Love it...thanks, Heavyweight!
Can't even decide how they catch my life in there songs
Yep. I’m here because of Heavyweight too. This song is beautifully written and composed
I miss being with somebody. Haven't had a proper break-up, but the realization that whatever romance was between you and somebody else has passed and that part of your life is hollow until you find a suitable replacement isn't a particularly fun one to happen upon.
Mr. Samson knows how to write shit I vibe with.
OMFG, I thought at first it was my hometown, and then I saw the bowling alley. I was right, gotta love the north end!
Go Winnipeg go!
I Hate Winnipeg
This band never disappoints me.
I love the heavy office manager handing out the envelopes. Talking about keeping it real...
Great video! you can really feel the emotion and the transition as the guy loses his job.
This is my summer song. I listen 🎶 to it often. But just watching video tonight. I grew up in Detroit and we definitely have seen good times and bad.
Kinda thought they were talking about that.lunchbox town to our south (north?) .... Windsor, Ontario. Now I hear it's Winnipeg. Oh darn.
Thank you for the nostalgic look at grade six at Champlain School.
timeless....for now
John, you are a genius! I am a propagandhi fan by blood, but a John K Samson fan foremost
I live a block away from Main and Inkster... awesome song
2020 keep listen this
Why am i crying
Best album ever.
I love this
Beautiful song.
Man I just love this video. I'm going to visit the North End next time I'm in the Peg.
i love this song and the podcast heavy ❤️
heavyweight
The weakertans are the best band ever!
I like this song.
We can’t change anything. We’re all the same. Tragic.
great band!
my american idol audition song
In my head, yes.
yes the band is from winnipeg
single father. just lost job. Worried about how to pay bills. Been there, done that. Not fun.
This song got me through Army Infantry School.
Is it me or does it seem like death cab for cutie learned what they know from the weakerthans?
Cody Nita C. That’s just you.
Definitely similar styles
But only for their best album
congratulations
I just found out the guy who wrote some of my favorite Propagandhi songs has a whole other band... Nice!
who else is here from rainer g. otts autoresponder???
Seit dem Release habe ich den Song nicht sooft gehört... ich clicke jedes Mal wieder drauf
Anything Canadian I support
just another reminder that everyone is 3d. its easy to judge that asshole dad who picks a fight with the coach at his kid's baseball game, but its hard to think about the kind of things that could be going on in their life. while this doesnt excuse them, it is important to understand and it is essential to be empathetic.
@bubbalouie99 It's basically just a working class tale. A guy gets fired from his blue collar job and has to learn to deal with it. It's a slice of life, a short story in video, or a vignette of a day in one man's life.
@bouncingsouls6 oh yess it absolutely did! *-*
Heavyweight is alot like his previous show, CBC radio 1's Wire Tap. Did your guys in the U.S. have Wire tap down there?
Now that the furniture's returning to its goodwill home
With dishes and last week's paper
Rumors and elections
Crosswords, an unending war
The black in our fingers
Smear their prints on every door pulled shut
Now that the last month's rent is scheming
With the damage deposit
Take this moment to decide
(Sun in an empty room)
If we meant it, if we tried
(Sun in an empty room)
Or felt around for far too much
(Sun in an empty room)
From things that accidentally touched
(Sun in an empty room)
Hands that we nearly hold
With pennies for the GST
The shoulders we lean our shoulders
Into on the subway, mutter an apology
The shins that we kick
Beneath the table, that reflexive cry
The faces we meet, one awkward beat
Too long and terrified
Know the things we need to say
(Sun in an empty room)
Been said already anyway
(Sun in an empty room)
By parallelograms of light
(Sun in an empty room)
On walls that we repainted white
(Sun in an empty room)
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Sun in an empty room
Take eight minutes and divide
(Sun in an empty room)
By ninety million lonely miles
(Sun in an empty room)
And watch his shadow cross the floor
(Sun in an empty room)
We don't live here anymore
(Sun in an empty room)
cool
@Elapses winnipeg is not a small town. small town feel maybe.
im guessing the video is about winnipeg?
There was a lot of this stuff happening when Stephen Harper was in power
AWW the north end :)
OH THANKS TIPS
@IAdorePie I see the vocal and lyrical similarities between Samson and Gibbard. But instrumentally they're very different bands. Both are good times, though.
Under appreciated
Manitoba is part of the west
A-co
Sadly the "People Before Profit" part of the sign is no longer there. Awesome song though, one of the all time best imo.
Turn on closed captions - something about a fish smear got me curious
Time to see this clip remade... but with RIM (BlackBerry) employees...
We've been let down by our political leaders for a long time
@rancid237 llevas toda la razon
Living in Poland is surprisingly easy
@Lolz097 aka...your life just changed forever.
hey i like the higher XD
because they dont like making ppls ears bleed...
and want to convey a message that ppl can understand... gosh.
For "Civil Twilight": "The owner of this video has not made it available in your country :\". I'm in Canada... The Weakerthans are CANADIAN. WTF?
Heavyweight brought me here.
at least this is better than the higher
not first!
Could someone revisit this song and record a more up-tempo version please? Coming from that podcast where I learned to love it at 1.3 speed I think it works like that but I guess you'd do a better job recording it at that tempo to start with.
@a7xbabe5 I liked epitaph when they did the whole punk-o-rama compilations now there are only a few good bands left on the label bad religion for starters, anything that is not screamo on epitaph is ok in my book. ooh thats right they picked up alk3 great band
Where was this video shot? Accents of the interviewees are interesting and I can't pin it.
I believe it’s Winnipeg.
Oooh haha cool man thanks! I'm from way, waaay Northern Michigan and our accents up here are vaguely similar.
@@wyattbehm4504 There's eastern european accents mixed in there. Polish, almost certainly Ukranian...
y is this band not screamo?
16the comment wow. care?, 306th view, wow xD Niec song imo
epitaph is a bunch of dif genres if u see all the bands they have signed there not all screamo

wtf there should be two genres good music and bad music.guess there should be one opinion too wtf well this is a beautiful song
Agreed, there should only be two genres of music; "good" and "bad"
I hear T.G.I.F. by Katy Perry in the chorus XD
Good video except for that stupid Epitaph logo
