Came to joke about listening to curling music with my buddies our first time going, ended up listening to a banger. Cheers from Texas🍻

Same goes, I can't wait to see them in a few weeks. Finally for the first time! It's hard to believe but it has been 10 years. Even though they tour like madmen and have been in my city 3 other times that I know of... (I wish I could have gone fellas)
The Weakerthans are brilliant and their videos are all fun and unique.
Very inspiring. I know (The Weakerthans) were thinking about calling it quits not too long ago, but Thank You for sticking with it.

"Why.....? ---Why can't I draw right up to what I wanna' say?" Just a simple, yet effective way to give a first account example of what he's singing about. He has to ask "Why?" not once, but twice, with the question being about why he can't explain himself in one line, by doing it in two. You can really feel the embarrassment and awkwardness John seems love encapsulating in some of his lyrics. That simplicity in effectively using very little words can go under the radar, and that delicacy and intent in his word choices is really a shining example of why John is such a talented artist.
That line always makes me laugh because it's just so simply funny and reflective.

Kind of disappointed that I've seen the video and the "real" story now...
I always imagined that the person in the song was a woman and her partner had proposed to her. The title, Tournament of Hearts, being a reference to an all-women's annual curling championship. The proposal coming from "And I know you're out there waiting for an answer I can't give you".
She's feeling shitty that she can't commit to her partner, she roars through the years, drifts through the months, slides through the days and is throwing hack weight/not putting herself 100% in the relationship.
Just how I always saw it.
Side Note: I LOVE the imagery in this song. The bar looks JUST how I imagined it! :D
One of my favourite lyrics of all time "Elvira brings the bottle, hold it up and let it bend the figures of two rinks battling an extra end" for some reason took me ages to understand that she was holding the bottle up and watching the curling THROUGH it. I know it's probably obvious, but yeah...
    So, any thoughts? :)

There's nothing funny about curling. It's exactly this emotional and heartbreaking. Which is why it's such a perfect metaphor for this song is actually NOT about curling at all. Anyways this is my favourite curling song.

John K. Samson is absolutely amazing. Going from Propagandhi to the Weakerthans shows his musicianship to its fullest. Beautiful stuff. He can write energetic and hopeful lyrics, or maybe turn around and give a melancholy sort of feel to one of his songs, whether it be the Weakerthans or his solo material. Either way, great music from a great musician. RIP The Weakerthans, and may your music be timeless and enjoyable forever.

I was on a miserably useless curling team in high school. I realize that the game can be played at a really high level but the death of local bullshit casual curling play is probably causing old white rural dudes to turn to oxy and heroin.

I know someone says this about EVERY band, but I really think the Weakerthans are incredibly overlooked. They need to distance themselves from Epitaph (even if they're signed on Anti) because they're clearly a bit too grown up for that crowd. But anyway, whoever said "the beauty of small things" is right. Our culture needs more music like this! Can't wait to see them at Lollapalooza.

I fucking love the Weakerthans, but the videos from Reunion Tour have not been very good. The one shot thing for Civil Twilight was a cool idea but just didn't come out well.
I've listened to this song maybe a hundred times on the record, and the image I've always gotten in my head is almost exactly like the video for Psalm for the Elks Lodge Last Call. The B&W/faded sepia thing just doesn't seem to fit this one.
Oh well it's not like I'm listening to them for the videos anyways

Great song, love john K. and the weakerthans, but the video fell apart, and felt over-tried in the age after the music video....
