I was 15 when I first heard them perform this at a local festival. Changed my life. 'Europe Is Lost' belongs to the 'Let Them Eat Chaos' album which when you listen to it from beginning to end tells story about a group of individuals isolated by capitalist London who eventually are brought together by the power of a storm.
I helped open a show for them waaay back when I was at University (this was back in 2009), I recognised them off of an album I heard them from of another artist I really liked (and listened to as a teenager), when I realised who it was, I kinda got over excited and ran over to meet them and probably talked more about the other artist than them like an idiot, but they were super nice and cool to speak to and their performance absolutely blew me away, and I am glad to see they've grown more popularity since then and they keep coming out with gold. They have an incredible and poignant way with words. Though, I still thing they're not loved enough and don't get enough attention, I mean, especially now, I feel like their words would resonate with so many people.
The 'molest the heads of dead pigs' line is a reference to David Cameron, previous PM for the UK. She's amazing, I've always thought of her a poet rather than a rapper but this was definitely hiphop - love it!
Thank you so much. You made my dreams (of spreading their truth-telling bars) possible. I’ll recommend more tomorrow. There is no lack of material. My first reaction was like yours ... only I also wept the tears of this entire past year. Release helps but doesn’t change anything but my resolve. Thank you. Appreciate you. Glad you hear it - Truth. 🤪
I started asking for people to review her to just listen to what shes layin down and with all my heart i believe she has really earned her award....the youngest to ever be recognized and the recipient of Ted Hughs award for poetry spoken or written. and she is also entered into the great English authors of all time. You must listen to her LIVE at Glastonbury the poem,- HOLD YOUR OWN- and another at Sofar by Kate Tempest called- GIVE....there is a verse in the poem GIVE that is so beautiful it will send your mind on a beautiful journey...her words are so on point her emotion is real and raw and hers...but ours too. I cannot get enough of her...there is her version of ICARUS absolutely beautiful and another about a soldier..another about an extramarital affair...another about the ten commandments..another about PEOPLES FACES...just beautiful but HOLD YOUR OWN is good..and please watch her recite GIVE at Sofar. so good. hold your own will make you cry...so will give....so will peoples faces...they are beautiful.
This really is incredible. I heard the version that goes along with the music video years back and loved it, but when I first heard this, it was like a whole new song/poem. So much more intimate and emotional. And that line where she ends off the a Capella section("meanwhile the people are dead in their droves, and nobody noticed, oh wait, somebody noticed. I can tell by the _emoji_ he posted") still gives me chills. Also, I know this is an old video, but if you haven't hear "War Music" by Kate, it's incredible. I highly recommend it.
hey, great to see you giving Kae the love on here. I just saw them at Forwards Festival in Bristol, England and they moved me to tears. Dunno how popular they are in the States, but however much it is, they deserve more recognition....
Europe is Lost is *always* great, was also the Song that got me into Kae's music. But this Version with the Instrumental Break in the Middle is EXTRA Powerful. I love Kae Tempest as a Musician, but maybe even moreso as a Poet and Writer. Theyre First album, "Everybody Down", every Chapter is done parallel to a Chapter in their first Book "The Bricks that built the Houses". I know this video is old, but for something more from Kae Tempest, i'd suggest "Peoples Faces" or "Icarus" - Icarus is from their Old Band "Sound of Rum".
This is exactly why true poets should always be given a hip-hop band. Your reaction to this was pure joy to watch like watching myself. You should play the rest of the record. The album is called let them eat chaos
Kae is incredible! This performance is from a record that tells an entire narrative from start to finish. It's really worth listening to that way. Kae comes from a spoken word background so you get those skills as well as hip hop skills...they are of course related but slightly different.
Yeah so much Kae has put out, i would suggest all their albums, but here is a few quick choices Brown Eyed Man. A Bad Place for a Good Time. Ketamine for Breakfast. People's Faces. Time is Hardcore. How does one get the word out...to people who need to hear it, that's the question. But then even with a group like Rage Against the Machine, "Fans" start hearing Zack or other group members talking politics and they complain (we want mindless music, yes people don't really listen to lyrics I guess)
So happy to see you enjoying this masterpiece. My other favorite songs are Picture a vacuum, Lion mouth door knocker, Ketamine for breakfast and Tunnel vision. Cheers from Prague.
So happy you reacted to this! Listen to any and (ideally!) all Kae's stuff, so much power there. My particular picks would be Ketamine for breakfast, brown eyed man, firesmoke and all humans too late.... circles is good and the stuff with Sound of Rum too- Icarus is my favourite
Kate is something else for sure, and while her first album is good the second one (Let Them Eat Chaos) is just phenomenal - the production and the lyrics and delivery are absolutely top notch.
Listen to the entirety of "let them eat chaos" from start to finish. For your own pleasure then go on from there. She is one of the best modern poets in my opinion. Saul Williams would be the best comparison if one is needed.
Kate tempest is technically a long form poet who now sets her work to music. Her work is available in both book and CD. Another one who doesn't get the recognition she deserves but of course the powers don't want people to hear what she is saying
listen to Tunnel vision. :) So Kae Tempest is went to school in thomas talis school ( named after the great classical musical) this is within 3 miles of a place called new cross. Akala talks about this in the fire in the booth. New cross fire of 1981.
Kae Tempest is awesome! Most definitely a powerful artist with something to say. The spoken word piece "Hold Your Own" they performed at the end of their set at Glastonbury a couple years ago is top-tier content. They also released some stuff as the group Sound of Rum many years ago that is good
I would have to say that I rarely comment and I've never watched a reacts to. But Kate Tempest is incredible and indeed the message needs to spread. Please, listen to one of her latest, Hold Your Own. I really think they are two sides of a coin. Here she's telling a story of how much of western civilization is both troubled and downright injurious at times and relates to us through our frustration with it. In Hold Your Own, she attacks it from a different angle, namely though our resilience in the face of hardship. She tells us not to dig our head into the sands but embrace all of life. Experience all if it. Kate is my favourite of favourites.
Even if you don't react to it. You need to listen Let them eat chaos. Its a hour long piece, its the album that this album comes from. Truly extraordinary
The album this is off, Let Them Eat Chaos, and it's follow up Books of Traps and Lessons are both continuous stories....45min songs broken up into tracks. Kae is, in my opinion, the most under appreciated artist around. People's Faces would be a great track to react to.
You really need to listen to this in context of the album, Let them Eat Chaos. Also read The Bricks that built the Houses. It's all epic. Actually just listen to everything that Kae has produced, you will be better for it x
There is a strong spoken word scene in the UK. Some don't like it, but some performers are are also incorporating music. Will try to find one poet I love and a great documtary on a competition with young people in Leeds where the winners earned a trip to the USA. Lots of interesting material on links between poetry, debate and learnng more about politics for young people who are usually exclded from opportunitie. Also many artists in the UK referenced Black Lives Matter alongside the usual themes.
Listen to the whole album start to finish. I think there is a performance on UA-cam somewhere. It's all one big piece made up of several songs. The return of the concept album! But holy shit is it good.

Holy goddam WHAT???? I’ve never seen someone do this before with such passion!!!!
Glad to see you doing their content, they don't get anywhere near enough exposure, keep up thr good work
Kae is a national treasure
Kae Tempest is an astounding talent. Their social commentary knows no bounds. One of the best spoken word artists on the scene by far.
They are a poet, playwright, rapper, artist in every form of the word. I cannot get on a high enough soapbox to sing their praises
