That's a very reasonable test.. The thermal cycling is a killer on all sorts of industrial enclosures. A downside to the wick system is of course that the rain would seep up such an arrangement. Gore-tex / breathable membranes are often used on hermitically sealed electronic measuring instruments that may be exposed to the elements.
That’s alright until the box or the conduit running into it suffers a seal failure, and fills without water without tripping the mains, then someone touches the wet string. I’ve actually had a shock from the wet string of a pull cord light switch being full of water from a flood upstairs before. Good idea though, could easily be made safe with a cut off bit of conduit around the string.
Nice catch, I've got a short coming out that shows just how fast the water comes off the string as I missed it on this video, looks fast enough to stop the box filling up. But I like the conduit idea or maybe some earth sleeving pulled through the hole with the string halfway up it.👍

Maybe cutting the string shorter so it's covered by the box might help with the rain problem?
