I managed to get most of the paperwork done on starting a Salsa business. But had to stop as covid hit, during that time. I might be out of place now and will need to research everything all over again. When I was working on the paperwork, I believe all I had to do. Was complete the document on how much income I make per year. I live in a small town and been wanting to sell some of my grandmother's and my modified salsa for some time. I know I need a Food Handler's Permit for the California regulations. I'm not sure what else I need besides that. Any advice on anything?

Here's a general roadmap to guide you through the necessary steps and considerations for starting your salsa business in California:
      1. Business Plan Development
Market Research: Understand your target market, competitors, and demand for salsa in your area.
Business Model: Decide if you'll sell directly to consumers (e.g., farmers markets, online), through retailers, or both.
Financial Planning: Include projections for startup costs, pricing strategy, revenue forecasts, and break-even analysis.
      2. Legal and Regulatory Requirements
Business Registration: Register your business with the California Secretary of State. Decide on your business structure (e.g., sole proprietorship, LLC).
Seller's Permit: Required in California for selling goods and products.
Food Handler's Permit: As you mentioned, this is crucial. Anyone involved in the preparation and handling of food needs to have this permit.
Cottage Food Operation License: If your operation qualifies, this allows you to prepare and sell food from your home kitchen with some limitations.
Health Department Permits: You'll likely need to have your production facility (even if it's a home kitchen) inspected and approved by the local health department.
Product Labeling and Compliance: Follow FDA guidelines for food labeling, including nutritional information, ingredients, and allergen declarations.
Insurance: Obtain liability insurance to protect your business from potential claims.
      3. Production and Supply Chain
Kitchen Facilities: Decide if you'll start with a home kitchen (if regulations allow) or need commercial kitchen space.
Suppliers: Source high-quality, consistent ingredients. Build relationships with suppliers to ensure reliability and cost-effectiveness.
Quality Control: Establish protocols to ensure each batch of salsa meets your standards and safety regulations.
      4. Marketing and Sales
Branding: Develop a strong brand identity that reflects your story and the quality of your salsa.
Online Presence: Create a website and use social media to build awareness and engage with customers.
Distribution Channels: Explore local farmers markets, online sales, local grocery stores, or restaurants as potential sales channels.
      5. Financial Management
Accounting System: Set up an accounting system to manage your finances, track expenses, and revenue, and prepare for taxes.
Tax Considerations: Stay informed about tax obligations, such as sales tax, income tax, and business taxes.
      6. Adaptability and Growth
Feedback Loop: Establish a system to gather customer feedback for continuous improvement.
Scalability: Plan for growth, considering how you can scale operations, expand product lines, or enter new markets.
      Additional Resources
Local Small Business Resources: Contact local business development centers, such as the Small Business Administration (SBA) or SCORE, for guidance and resources.
Food Industry Associations: Joining relevant associations can provide networking opportunities, industry insights, and access to resources.
Starting a food business involves navigating a complex landscape of regulations and market challenges, but with careful planning and dedication, it can also be incredibly rewarding. Stay informed about local regulations as they can vary significantly by location and may have been updated

So....here's a situation...my family already owns a food business that sells pre-packaged and bulk ethnic foods to retail and a handful of restaurants. I am wanting to open a new division of artisan products( same product) I want to go under my own LLC (they are just an s Corp right now) also, our product is fresh to order-how would I market this to sell online?? Please and ty!
(BIG FAN-appreciate all you offer to help a newbie like me) and no...expanding the existing business with my sister not an option-she's greedy and self entitled as far as the business that was equally left to both of us and I fear she's gonna bring it down) (sorry for the TMI-but it's what I'm up against)
