  • How to teach dog to hold something in mouth: If you want to train your dog to hold things, this is the video to watch! These are the first steps to training a dog to hold an object, starting with grasping an item, then learning to hold the item with duration. In this video we demonstrate teaching dogs to hold a dumbbell, but after your dog learns the basics, you can use almost any item - toys, leashes, paintbrushes, your imagination is the limit!

    Finally! Every trainer I've watched demonstrates with dogs who naturally grab objects. My dog doesn't, in fact she doesn't play with objects in her mouth at all, so this was very encouraging. thank you!

    Omgggg this is genius!!! I’ve been struggling so much with teaching my dog to hold. She doesn’t like anything in her mouth and a lot of the other trainers use force (physically open the mouth, pinch ears etc) all kinds of things I won’t do. I’ve been using shaping, but I haven’t been able to get her to actually open her mouth - she will touch it, push it/roll it, etc. i think this will work so well for her! Thank you!!!!

      Sometimes just shaping it helps too. Like treats for looking at it, then treats for touching it in any way, lots of excitement when they do. End on a positive note and Keep them wanting more. Gets put away until next training session with you. Sometimes starting with something they're more apt to put in their mouth helps too. Like a toy you can put treats inside of. Have also smeared cream cheese, wet dog food, or liverwurst (not a fan of peanut butter) on a dumbbell to help. Doing a FETCH class now so this video will definitely help my students. Hope that helps.

    This is an older video, so I understand if you do not see/look at any new comments, but I just wanted to say that you've been a really great resource training my border collie mix pup. I got her a couple months ago, she is 4 months now and incredibly smart. I don't own a farm or easily accessible dog park (my apartment complex doesn't have one near), so I am trying to find things to keep her stimulated and fulfilled. I really want to teach her to paint eventually after watching your videos on painting and also frisbee/fetch in the meantime. I have already started working with her on puzzle toys and she's pretty happy with those. This video opens up so many more fun things I can help her learn so when I am busy or not home she will be able to be happy!

    Love this video, thanks so much! My labrador loves fetch but I've been trying to teach her to carry items. So far she'll only fetch items and while that's fun, it's not necessarily helpful 😂 I had gotten her to take fairly consistently but she'd immediately drop the toy for a treat, I couldn't get the timing right and get her to hold anything in her mouth for any duration. It makes a lot of sense to do them as two commands as you're asking for two different behaviors - taking the toy into their mouth, and then keeping it in their mouth. Like a down-stay, positional then duration cue. Thank you!!

    i taught 2 of my moms dogs to shake paw and i thought they were really smart because they learned it in like 5 minutes. problem is that now they think the answer to any question is just to throw paws at it. if the answer to the problem isn't flailing paws, they don't care and just resign themselves to the fact that they aren't getting treats.

    How to avoid chewing?

  • @XMissRammsteinX

    I recently discovered your channel and after watching this video I gave it a try. My husky mix isn't the biggest fan of having something in his mouth except for food and chewing snacks, but it didn't take very long until he took the wooden stick I trained with in his mouth. I am now trying to stretch the time before the release, but the problem is, he starts chewing on the stick basically immediately. How can i discourage him from doing so?

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  Рік тому +1

      Without the stick you can do an exercise of gently placing your hand under your dogs chin for just a second or 2 to begin with, then immediately treat. Repeat this many times until your dog is comfortable with it and you can extend the length of time just a very small amount each time, always followed immediately with a food reward. You are rewarding stillness while your hand is under his chin. Then, after your dog is fully comfortable with this, add the stick back in, with your hand under his chin (with the hand under the chin, you are again trying to achieve stillness), starting again only for a second or 2. Then exchange the stick for the treat right away. Always take lots of time with these small steps so that your dog doesn't feel pressured. It's meant to be fun and rewarding for your dog. :) You can also exchange the wooden stick with something else in a similar shape that he is less prone to chew.
