  • Holger Geschwindner is known as the "mad scientist" of basketball. He was Dirk Nowitzki's only trainer for his entire NBA career. Dirk credits Holger with developing his game and keeping his body NBA ready for countless seasons.
Here is a footwork and skill layup routine using the moves that Holger taught Dirk. This routine is very unique and highly beneficial to any age or skill level.

Dirk Nowitzki won some of his most important games with layup, like game 2 and game 4 of the 2011 finals, and that Game 7 against the Spurs in 06.

This is damm good staff. looks like the clown drills, but really focus on footwork and balance. I have been researching about Holger, but it really helps me to understand his basics and concept. Thank you so much for sharing this, and your staffs are so underrated which is hell of good. Please share your knowledge as much as you can.

Thanks for commenting. Holger is a genius and these concepts and drills are probably better for younger players than anything I've ever taught. The carry over to game play is really strong.

You know what else they focus on? Full body movements. On every drive here you're using your entire body. It's a similar concept to how you will get stronger when you squat or deadlift than if you just curl

First of all, thank you HoopSense for what you have done. I just found a few of your videos and the ones I’ve seen are brilliant, focused, and done with the spirit of improving understanding and execution of The Game. To me, they stand out in a world of UA-cam click bait. From what I have seen so far I will be studying all your videos closely.
I’ve played hoops for decades and am always looking to become more effective and increase my Bball IQ. I don’t understand why this stuff is not more prevalent yet, but I will use it for sure with my 4the grade son and his team. Young kids often struggle with rushing their layups, seeing the court once they start their move, and also figuring out which foot to take off of. These drills take care of ALL of that. They demonstrate how much time two steps actually is if you are balance s and don’t rush. Not a complete basketball program for sure, but brilliant fundamentals.
And to some of the comments below, there are NO travel violations in this video. Notice the ball being dribbled next to the foot during the protect dribble, and then two steps follow. Every time. There is nothing that says you must continue moving in the same direction as your dribble.( Eurostep anyone? ) The key is to be balanced on one foot (thus the 360 spin practice basics), so one can react to the situation (notice the eyes up!) and be able to change direction based on what the defense is giving.

Love the video, I have a question about the purpose of the 360 spins. What’s the importance of them and why should that be something implemented in skill development training?

I like what I see but are they traveling in some examples because I see 3 steps and if it’s a continuous movement I thought 2 steps only
