Oh my gosh! It looks almost the same as I remember from 1959! My family went from N Indiana to Ft lauderdale, 6 people on a 24’ boat. The long barges terrified me and going down in the locks. Not finding a place to tie up for the night was really scary! There were river boats and barges running all night that could have killed us! And the wake hitting our little boat tied up on the river! 😳 We stayed a week in Greenville Ms, dad hit a log and bent the prop, at the little marina we met people that took us all home with them that week! It was amazing. My dad bought our boat from a guy that built it in his barn. Dad had never owned a boat, so his first trip was an epic one! We all survived, still live in Florida, but over the years it was quite a story to tell! Thanks for filming your trip, it brings back a lot of memories for me from 61 years ago, Mom and Dad are gone now but not forgotten ❤️
I'm 5 years late to the party....one thing to note: when meeting or coming up behind a barge, be VERY wary of logs just under the surface. The turbulence from the props often causes water logged logs to ALMOST come to the surface, and they can do tons of damage to smaller boats.
Great video. Love your narration. You sound like great guys. You could have moored on the downtown riverfront in Cape Girardeau, people moor there all the time, you just can't spend the night. People moor there all the time.
Oh, I’m so happy to have found your vlog. I’m an Australian, I went to a wedding in Iowa in a town on the banks of the Mississippi, reread Mark Twain and formed an ambition to travel the navigable Mississippi.
Wow, I've never had a boat. But seeing your boating adventure allowed me to see things from a whole new perspective. I love your videos and have subscribed. I was hoping you can help me out too. Good luck with you channel dude.
Still enjoy watching this trip. I’ve got a 27’ Chaparral cruiser that would work fine for this trip but as you know the logistics of getting the boat to the starting point you began at and then getting the truck/trailer to the end is my issue.. So want to do this…..
we didn't really clarify in the video, but dan rented a car, drove the rental to the truck (which had been driven by another friend from st luis to new orleans) in new orleans, got it, drove back to grafton, then to memphis... he was very afraid of the storms and nobody could change his mind about the matter.
Dan drove overnight to grab the truck and trailer and bring it back. I was not in support of this decision; but with him and Kevin gone, I did not want to trek this leg of the journey alone, so I had no choice but to comply. Next time around, I now have the confidence to do it alone if my crew is too afraid to accompany me through a storm on a river in an ocean-rated boat :)
Question for someone who has done this. Is there enough of a current to drift on the Mississippi? I am thinking of doing this as part of the great loop and I would be in no particular hurry to get anywhere. Plus I would be doing this on an extreme shoestring budget, so anything I could save in gas would be beneficial.
Shoal draft sailboat, as large as you can afford. Have the mast and boom shipped to Mobile Alabama. Have them step the there (do not hire any work done on the boat there unless you want to waste a month in a shit hole) then sail to Tampa and get a beer. Provision your boat with as much cold beer as you can due to that being the currency of choice when trying to get fresh shrimp from the shrimp boats (well worth it, and get a de-viener) sail to Key West and get drunk until your liver is properly swiss cheese, then sail up to West Palm and once again fill boat with beer before heading to Bahama and getting Conch. Stay a month or so there or until the beer almost runs out and head back. OK that was year1 all sewed up.
What boat launch did you go to the Missouri River to go from there to the Gulf of Mexico opo lunch did you go to and you's I want to take the same trip but don't know where to start
I didn't pay much for the boat since it wasn't in great condition when I bought it. And the kicker on Herbert is a Suzuki 15 HP EFI, or do you mean the 5 HP LEHR propane on the dinghy?
Shnarkle VonBarkle there was a storm in the forecast and rather than go through it, Dan insisted on stopping the trip, driving a rental car to our end point where our trailer was parked, grabbing the trailer, towing it back to where Herbert was, and then trailering into Memphis. I tried to explain how we were on an ocean-rated vessel on a river and there was nothing the river could throw at a boat like Herbert that it couldn't handle with ease, but no amount of logic or persuasion could change his mind. So, much against my will, we trailered Herbert to Memphis.
Thanks for the explanation, and thanks for uploading these videos. I'm looking at buying a boat in Wisconsin and trucking it to the Mississippi River to cruise it to the Gulf so this was a great help.
depends on the type of boat you have, but usually somewhere around hull speed is the most efficient. most trailerable boats this is 5-8 mph through the water
They aren't "barges." Or, rather they ARE; but when they're a unit being shoved under power, they're a "tow." And the boat that shoves them is a "towboat."
Fishpharmer some of the crew was very green and were afraid of the storms in the area. There was no need for us to take out as Herbert was designed for the ocean and it took a mutiny to get me to agree to skipping that part. Just know for your trip you will encounter severe weather at least twice along the way and plan for it.
Small Craft Cruising thank you for the reply, I live in Mississippi, there are thunderstorms nearly every summer afternoon. I do however respect the weather. These trip vids were great!!
Im planning on a river trip i was wondering why yall didnt plan a bit better ur fuel stops and or carry more fuel aboard. I know its a bit more expensive on the river but convenience is less stress. my study shows many gas stop easily obtained with a 100 to 150 mile range..
are you certain those fuel stops carry Gasoline and not Diesel? there are stretches of over 300 miles on the Mississippi where there are indeed Diesel stations, but they do not have Gasoline.
Did you really sit at the ramp dock for 6 hours to put on tags and fix your engine? I hope it wasn't a busy ramp or at least there was another dock for people who arrived prepared.
no, we were there about an hour, and it was a fairly slow day, maybe 3 boats came by in that time. Since the dock is L-shaped, there was plenty of room for them and us to share :)
I boat on the Mississippi every week. It's guys like you that end up needing rescue in the middle of the night before being sucked through a lock and dam. It appears that you really didn't prepare properly for your trip.
true, but the county sheriff rescue teams get tired of simulated rescues so its all good, I am just hoping to happen upon the youboob video of yall getting sucked thru a lock, never knew that was even a thing
Gee.. no intro at all ! What kind of boat is it.. what engine does it have. Did you buy it for the trip. How much.. I mean who the eff are you anyway.? these things give a story a little back bone.
Need to say more about yourselves, your reasons for doing things like pulling Herbert out a Cape G. Talk about Food , Fishing?? Herbert ,,,, on and on . Very sketchy dialogue . Weak . But adventuresome so Kudos all around for that .
His dialogue reminds me of the classic surf flick, Endless Summer. I like it. Easy-going, fun to watch. If it was intended to be an in-depth, how-to video, I might expect more details about food, etc., but it's not. Not all videos on youtube are meant to be free seminars. It documented their trip, from their perspective, with dialogue in the moment.
just curious, and I dont know why I am, just seems like you guys are either really good friends,, or gay? just wondering, if so, good deal, I wish hetero guys were so together with a project,,,lol
haha you're not the first.. remember Turk and JD from Scrubs? We don't care about plumbing or skin color, just simply haven't found any women who are willing to rough it with us on most of our trips (including our respective wives and girlfriends), so it's usually just the 5 of us dudes. I'm hoping to change that with future videos now that Herbert has many more comforts installed.

I absolutely love this series. Someday I'd like to make the same trip. I can't even imagine the fun you guys must have had on this trip.
Oh man! I was so into this trip. never thought about fueling up like that....very cool...
I'm 5 years late to the party....one thing to note: when meeting or coming up behind a barge, be VERY wary of logs just under the surface. The turbulence from the props often causes water logged logs to ALMOST come to the surface, and they can do tons of damage to smaller boats.
I'm totally hooked on this adventure and Herbert is super cool :)
I am from Missouri, and I can assure you that no one. Ever. Has been that excited to be in my state. lol 0:54
It true lol. I'm from Missouri too
Great video. Love your narration. You sound like great guys. You could have moored on the downtown riverfront in Cape Girardeau, people moor there all the time, you just can't spend the night. People moor there all the time.
Way to sing it Brantly, and keep on playing... I'll be waiting on the next one... :)
Still one of my fav boat videos!
Oh, I’m so happy to have found your vlog. I’m an Australian, I went to a wedding in Iowa in a town on the banks of the Mississippi, reread Mark Twain and formed an ambition to travel the navigable Mississippi.
it takes a lot of preparation, but it is surprisingly easy to do if you have a good base of boating knowledge and camping experience
LOTS OF FUN , GREAT , THANKS
Great tip on entering the locks using the radio! The guys in the Twin Cities area gave me a short written history on the lock system.
I thought they closed the locks up here years ago due to invasive species
Mac Lock Number One in Downtown Minneapolis was closed by the Army Corps of Engineers to stop invasive species migration north.
Passed those boats on my vacation. They were headed to green turtle bay in Kentucky.
I've got a very similar 1979 wellcraft sun yacht great boat
Wow, I've never had a boat. But seeing your boating adventure allowed me to see things from a whole new perspective. I love your videos and have subscribed. I was hoping you can help me out too. Good luck with you channel dude.
Very nice!:)
Nice job!
11:33 geez you had the entire fire department out there to put your boat on the trailer lol.
Jimmy Grant lol yeah! It just so happened they were out running drills that day, but it made for some good pics ;)
Ok, you got the Mighty Mississippi done. Time for the Mighty Columbia! Start up in Canada and make your way down. Lots of miles! Lol
I boat there all the time by the Grafton Harbor and pool 26 it's a pretty good time
The "Pirate" ships were The Nina and Pinta republics that make trips up the river every few years.
Still enjoy watching this trip. I’ve got a 27’ Chaparral cruiser that would work fine for this trip but as you know the logistics of getting the boat to the starting point you began at and then getting the truck/trailer to the end is my issue.. So want to do this…..
About how much fuel did you use to get down river? Thinking about doing this I live just north of Cape Girardeau
I am soooo confused was someone fallowing with the truck?
Curious as to the decal’s you’re putting on the boat at the dock??
How did you get the truck down to pull it to Memphis (from Grafton) or did I miss something?
we didn't really clarify in the video, but dan rented a car, drove the rental to the truck (which had been driven by another friend from st luis to new orleans) in new orleans, got it, drove back to grafton, then to memphis... he was very afraid of the storms and nobody could change his mind about the matter.
Captain Morgan on the Dingy lol
Hey man that's a good boat cmon
So,,,,,, How did you just happen to get your truck and trailer to the boat when you towed it to TN ?
Dan drove overnight to grab the truck and trailer and bring it back. I was not in support of this decision; but with him and Kevin gone, I did not want to trek this leg of the journey alone, so I had no choice but to comply.
Next time around, I now have the confidence to do it alone if my crew is too afraid to accompany me through a storm on a river in an ocean-rated boat :)
how much money did you spend on ful thru your whole trip
Question for someone who has done this. Is there enough of a current to drift on the Mississippi? I am thinking of doing this as part of the great loop and I would be in no particular hurry to get anywhere. Plus I would be doing this on an extreme shoestring budget, so anything I could save in gas would be beneficial.
Not.... Really, no. You need speed through the water to maintain steering control. And you DEFINITELY need to be able to steer.
Mind you, a small boat with a small outboard motor is fully sufficient.
Shoal draft sailboat, as large as you can afford. Have the mast and boom shipped to Mobile Alabama. Have them step the there (do not hire any work done on the boat there unless you want to waste a month in a shit hole) then sail to Tampa and get a beer. Stay a month or so there or until the beer almost runs out and head back. OK that was year1 all sewed up.
try towing the tender with the motor leg in the water. this should make it more stable in the water.
What boat launch did you go to the Missouri River to go from there to the Gulf of Mexico opo lunch did you go to and you's I want to take the same trip but don't know where to start
Sick
whats the length of your boat?
Was the boat free! What is that small motor on the back of the boat
I didn't pay much for the boat since it wasn't in great condition when I bought it. And the kicker on Herbert is a Suzuki 15 HP EFI, or do you mean the 5 HP LEHR propane on the dinghy?
I missed something here. Why was there this detour over the bridge rather than under it?
Shnarkle VonBarkle there was a storm in the forecast and rather than go through it, Dan insisted on stopping the trip, driving a rental car to our end point where our trailer was parked, grabbing the trailer, towing it back to where Herbert was, and then trailering into Memphis. Thanks. Ask questions, I'm happy to answer.
Be care full in big seas those boats are very bow heavy.
How much they cost in total for just the fuel
I am a sailboat Capt. - you people concern me greatly for the safety of flotsam.
Are you guys ABYC members? If not, join, and start soaking up all of the information and resources that they offer.
One tows a dingy with a yoke, not a single painter... stops it walking back and forth...
Cape G to Memphis, about 200 miles...you missed some of the most exciting and beautiful parts of the river.
besides the stone arch bridge in Minneapolis? cuz thats the best place
I was using a little sarcasm, not much to see on any of the rivers, either commercial or mud and trees.
Anyone else getting tiger king vibes from this dude
My Male friend just bought a boat. Cant wait take the boat trip with him. I'm super excited, so I'm watching videos to prepared my self
Damn already friend zoned him...lol
@@BigPoppa-Monk he friend zoned himself lol. That what he calls it lol
How fast should you go down the rivers to save fuel
depends on the type of boat you have, but usually somewhere around hull speed is the most efficient. most trailerable boats this is 5-8 mph through the water

Could u do deep sea fishing with this boat
I would not try it
Funny I grew up in az. Had orange and great fruit trees in my backyard....
Why did you take out at Cape Giradeau?
Im also curious why?
Im planning a similar adventure.
Fishpharmer some of the crew was very green and were afraid of the storms in the area. There was no need for us to take out as Herbert was designed for the ocean and it took a mutiny to get me to agree to skipping that part. If you would have put in in Chicago and took the Illinois River to Crafton you would have seen a lot more people
Great idea for a future trip!
Yeah, well, towboatmen call the Illinois "The Shit Ditch" for a good reason.
Narley Dude!
Dudeeeee yoooo bro narley comment dudeeeee

Since you're knowledgeable about the Mississippi, would you mind messaging me?
Sure, where?
If you weren't able to message me on here, MississippiRiverDreams@gmail.com.
true, but the county sheriff rescue teams get tired of simulated rescues so its all good, I am just hoping to happen upon the youboob video of yall getting sucked thru a lock, never knew that was even a thing
where did yall sleep???
moist 2 in forward berth. Dinette converts to sleep one. Then two on the floor between all the stuff. It was... Cozy haha
you should do a boat tour.
Small Craft Cruising , wish you guys showed some more of the inside area of boat..kitchen, dining and sleeping areas too.
thanks

Look at " 1978 fibreform 24 the restoration" Part 1
Can't figure out why you came out of the river and towed it to Tennessee.
Paul Redrac one of the crew members saw an approaching storm and refused to go through it. It was not a decision I supported.
What dinghy was that?
Kevin Roman water tender 9.4 I have one
Sam Mill how do you like it?
Shoulda started at the real bottom should went down to louisiana
no offense lol you guys didn't prepare to well lol
Those LEHR propane outboards are awful.
Jimmy Grant they really are. I wanted so bad to like it, and they are a great concept. But just too cheaply/poorly built leads to too many problems.
Are there really pirates out there??
June B there is I was out there last year and we came across some pirates
No dude its not real pirats
The US Coast Guard warned us of floating meth labs... Sorta like the RV from breaking bad but on water..
Small Craft Cruising damn thats a great idea
+June B - argh, dar is maty! you bes watch out or we'll fill yur ship with cannonballs.

they are gay they cant help it! they are trying to be like joe rogen on his radio show/pod cast, just saying Old One Legged Joseph T.
I will take your advice to heart in future videos, thanks for the feedback
