      He failed to maintain the distinction between what he thought the Israelis should do (e.g., have a "strategy for peace") and what they are morally or legally required to do. This conflation is a failure to actually be "a great, honest, voice of reason".

    I’m a British Israeli. Yesterday was the saddest birthday in the world. An Israeli hostage, Kfir, was one year old. If he is still alive.
    Why, even on a conservative and generally balanced podcast, is only Israel being asked legal and moral questions? Hamas comes from a different Islamic ideology. But morally they are indistinguishable from ISIS. Does Hamas’ avowed intention to kill Jews and destroy Israel not have some input to this debate?

      I guess it depends on your view of the facts.
      Israel is a settler colonial apartheid state built on Palestinian land. Only 10% of the Jews were even born in the country when the state of Israel was formed. Israel forceably removed 750,000 Palestinians from their home during the Nakba, and don't forget the Zionests were actually talking about forceable transfer of Arabs in 1910.
      Whatever crimes that Hamas has and may commit in the future it will be no worse than what has been done to their people for over 75 years. I was in the West Bank seven times over the last twenty five years as an independent observer so I have seen countless times the brutal and inhuman treatment metered out to the Palestinians. I'm really sorry but right is on the side of the indeginous people of this area, accept that recognise the crimes that have been committed against them and you might find a peaceful solution. Continue to be an abuser and ultimately you will fail miserably.
      if you are struggling to grasp the inhumanity of what Jews are capable of, do this, google 'August 12th 1949 Kibbutz Nirim' read the story of the poor Palestinian girl and then come back and tell me how you feel.

      That some ministers in the government of Israel have made clear that they have not only the means to eradicate the Palestinians but the desire, is relevant. This dream of a final solution has been blurted and snarled out in the US congress also. Without US support Israel would not exist now, so blotted has its copy book been since the 1970's.
      It seems to be the case that even more of the former think the latter to be' vermin' or even 'sub human' than did before Oct 7. The temptation is demonstrably there to enact a final solution.
      The Israeli president made it quite clear that this was the way he thought of the Palestinians after their dreadful incursion - they were not human.
      Alarm bells should ring.

      Just a quick reminder that the Naqba only happened when the Arab states decided to destroy the new (and much smaller than now) Israel mandated by the UN.

    The decline of drinking is an existential threat to the English. I know everyone gets very agitated about the whole immigration thing but think about it like this: the declining birth rate directly correlates to the reduction in alcohol consumption. Unless you apply copious amounts of beer and wine your average Brit is very unlikely to copulate with anyone.

Tens of thousands of illegal migrants waiting to cross the Channel are not going to be deterred from doing so by the distant and unlikely prospect of a few flights taking off for Rwanda, where the capacity for them is strictly limited. Regarding the Israel/Gaza (or is it the IDF/HAMAS) conflict: with the Israeli Normalisation Agreement with Saudi Arabia and talk of further such in negotiation with middle eastern states, I was opyimistic that a form of permanent stability in the region could be reached. Well there are a lot of people in that region who don't want that and, surprise surprise, Gaza invaded Israel. As long as anti-semitism, wherever it festers, exists there is no answer to the problems of the middle east. I am disgusted at the tolerance of the authorities in this country and elsewhere to anti-semitism I point out that I am not Jewish myself.

    • @gandydancer9710

      It's the Israel/Gaza War. The IDF doesn't operate independently of the Israeli government and HAMAS was elected as, and anyway is until the IDF extirpates it, the government of Gaza. The "answer" was in effect on 10/6/23. Israel just needs to better defend its borders until the end of time. There is no "solution", just measures.

    • @BiggusDiggusable
      @BiggusDiggusable 8 місяців тому +5

      Because Israel is by some considerable margin the most powerful both military and politically and economically. Also it is in breach of international law as it's people continually settle on Palestinian lands which is the ultimate source of the conflict there. Furthermore, it has not pursued peace in good faith. That's why. Because Israel is not living up to its responsibilities. Sure, Palestinian a have reacted violently. Sure, the Hamas attack in Oct was criminal. But the only way to stop this is to eventually agree on peace.

    • @michaeljames8410
      @michaeljames8410 8 місяців тому +3

      It is in both Israel's and Palestine's interest to achieve a peachful outcome. Unfortunately Israel had accepted the status quo, but obvously that is no longer workable. Also unfortunate is that the Palestinians don't seem to ever intend on accepting Israel or ending the terrorism and fighting, so you cannot find peace with a nation like that. I hope that the world drops this attitude of supporting the Palestinians through encouraging them to keep fighting, which has been a devastating course of action for them up until this point. Hopefully Palestine begins to get a different kind of support; one that helps them build their own nation rather than attempt to destroy another.

    Israel deported all Jews from Gaza and gave it to the Palestinians for a peace that did not come. Perhaps now they should deport the Palestinians from Gaza to the West Bank and make Gaza part of Israel. That would greatly shorten the borders that Israel has to defend. There has to be some punishment for the barbarity of 07 Oct 23.

There is enough in this country to worry Oxbridge dons et al ,without poking their nose into issues of which they are ignorant. Israel doesn’t need the approval of armchair commentators from abroad, and especially not from Oxford and Cambridge, given their own treacherous histories.

      I've never been to the US but I watch a lot of US news and I certainly have an opinion on the crisis of mass illegal migration on their Southern border. Even if you ignore the undermining of the legal immigration system, there are issues of human-sex trafficking, child exploitation, migrant deaths from drowning and murder, debt-slavery, drug-trafficking and security, the growth of heavily-armed cartels risking conflict, the impact on housing and welfare and civil disorder in states like Texas and cities like NYC and Chicago, and then there's the 100,000+ Americans who have died from fentanyl overdosing, a drug being trafficked over the border by migrant mules. Shriver has a perfect right to an opinion on that.

The invasion of Poland wasn't conducted until 1939 without a plebiscite on the matter (indeed Hitler claimed that Poland had attacked Germany), so the parallel between German and Gazan "innocents" seems seems pretty clear to me.
