This miniseries, and their previous Dune miniseries are fantastic. I am always so amazed how inventive people can get on a limited budget. I have seen many dramas performed on stage with little to no props. For example, Man of La Mancha is meant to be performed with but a few props. Props, or even special visual effects are meant only to inform a story, not to carry it.
food for thought, very welcome so thank you my friend, which you became through that comment. The relevance and power of props and the question what actually constitutes a prop to consider. Funny: is there sth like a propness? Experiment: What if there were no props? Remember Alfred Hitchcock's "McGuffin" ?
This series Children Of Dune is a edited complication of "Dune Messiah" and "Children Of Dune" by director Greg Yaitanes. Staring Alec Newman, Susan Sarandon, James McAvoy, Julie Cox, and at the time an unknown James McAvoy. Kept relatively close to the source material as was feasible ( considering the budget ), but well acted and well made and very watchable. Chances are this production and script concepts will be used as a source material when Hollywood takes this on as a project. The monster of an adaptation that is yet to come will be "God Emperor Of Dune" an almost blindsiding story and a nightmare to adept and script. However it is in this that we will see the true protagonists of the Herbert novels, the "Bene Gesserit".
Well said... and I can tell you actually read the books... Honestly, these sci-fi's are every bit as amazing as Star Trek or Star Wars, but the only people who realize thus are those of us who sat at the feet of a creative bard and got lost in a tale.. Cheers to Mr Herbert for many entertaining hours and for giving me a mantra that I have carried with me into every chaotic circumstance since my senior year in high school... Chani was the only one he truly loved, since he dreamed of her before he even arrived on Dune. no other woman was in his dreams, not even the Emperor's daughter who he later married. he DID tell her that she would produce no children from him.
i LIKE THIS VERSION BECASUE the personal relationships, in the 2024 all is about the big purpose, so individuals are just pwans in the script to achive the goal. This is more like an soap opera. Every character has its own moment to bright.
This, I think, was the best of Dune for the reading impaired even in 2024. Great acting, sufferable variations from the books because of the budget... Did I say great acting?
The screenplay and characterization in this production exeeds all the glitz and noise of the new Dune movies --even though the limited budget is evident. Budgets ain't everything...
Yes, the 2000 minseries, with the Cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, defenitely felt very much like Dune, the Italian Empire. Not Roman, but kinda like it could have been shot in palaces along Corso Vittorio Emanuelle.. But it was shot in studio in Prague, so i suppose it was all sets... Prague looks very nicely preserved, but only from the outside. Since this was Commie country, there is absolutely nothing left of Burgeois interiors or furniture or knicknacks anywhere... It was all was gutted... . Whenever they try to restore anything old in the old iron curtain countries, there is never anything left, so they have to be very rough & make it look brand new. An example is the Erimitage... This version of Bene Gesserit, really very inspired by nuns, again like along Corso Vittorio Emanuelle, in the most religious town in the world...
Much of the "old" buildings in Europe are new rebuilds since WWII as much of Europe was Destroyed by carpet bombing / artillery / etc. You see a stone marker with a 1786 date and, well, yes: the original building was built back then. The marker stone might even be from that time. But.... Sadness....
@@samedwards6683Rome was declared open city & was not destroyed, so everything is still there (from the renaissance & on), including interiors, very nice & interesting... Prague was not bombed/shelled to destruction,, so it is a fabolous city from the outsides. But the interiors were looted. Prague is still very nice... In Sweden (were i come from) they had too much money to spend and tore down all the city centers & replaced it with modernist buildings. E g. the Danes concider the Swedish Cities to be ugly... Copenhagen (& smaller Danish towns) are always very beautiful.. My impression of German cities is that they usually are modern & OK, they feel just like our Swedish cities.. Do you know any good videos/documentaries about that?... Obviously, the Poles still know how to build like they did in the 1800:s... That is not the case in Sweden, even if there are exceptions...
Spotted two more deviations from the Frank Herbert books. The Reverend Mother and chief conspirator, Helen Mohiam was a wizened old woman, a crone in the books. But in the miniseries, she is portrayed as middle aged. It was Paul who confronted Irulan and gave her permission to cuckold him, not Chani, (although she was nearby and listening closely).

Like his father, the Duke Leto, Muad'Dib made a crucial mistake which unravelled and weakened his hold on power, and led to his downfall. Leto gave up Caladan for Arrakis and Paul married Irulan in order to rise to the purple. Two terrible mistakes by two remarkable men.
Stilgar and Korba were wiry dark skinned fremen warriors with blue within blue eyes brought about by the melange spice they consumed. This series portrays them as urbane, and as well to-do metropolitan men who have gotten used to the niceties and vagaries of power in Arrakis and have forgotten the hardships of the desert. Chani, Muad'Dib's concubine is also dark skinned and raised in the ways of the desert and sietch. She wasn't white. An Arab actress ought to have portrayed her in this miniseries. The book series author, Frank Herbert would have vehemently disagreed with these visual categorizations.
ALL the Fremen were dark, "arab-like," not just some. To get that effect, they would have had to film this in a country like Jordan (where the 2021 version was filmed), but they filmed it in the Czech Republic partly due to budget constraints. Look at the first movie; there are few people of color there. Actually, having everyone the same color avoids the problem: They're all of equal origin.

Sure, but as good as each movie or series is, it is someone else's vision. Nothing is ever as personal as your imagination while reading the books. Nothing is ever as complete as the original stories. But, they do come pretty close.

Movies aren't books, and vice versa. That said, the two miniseries are closer to the main ideas of the first three books than either the Lynch version or the latest version--which is largely a response to the Lynch version and ignores the miniseries. The plot is closer to that of the books. The characterization is also closer. In the latest, Chani is "woke" (I guess the expression is), but Herbert's Chani is not: She is meant as a foil to Irulan and to the other politically motivated women. She plays the traditional role of loving mother. There are women like that, but nowadays women all have to be brutal, like most men (!). Or take The Baron: in both Hollywood versions he is a disgusting, hideous monster, but in the 2001 (and 2003) miniseries he is clever, calculating, intelligent, and witty. This last point draws our attention to the miniseries script, which is superior to either movie. Imagine characters who are actually literate. The rhyming couplets, for instance, recall Shakespeare, both for who says the lines and when. What they did with a limited budget and other constraints still makes the miniseries superior, in my view, to the two Hollywood movies. [Note: I don't know anything about the new TV series Dune Prophecy. That's based on books written by Herbert's son and another writer.]
It is amusing to hear the super privileged comment on their manipulation by many as if that wasn't part of their 'job'. Far better to live an ordinary life beyond the reach of the power hungry. Of course, to manage that is not easy.
