"The Downloaded" - Rob Sawyer Talks About the Science Behind the Fiction

Robert J. Sawyer joins me to talk about his 25th novel, "The Downloaded," on this edition of "Some Books Considered." We discuss the plot "The Downloaded" which involves two different groups of people who have their consciousness uploaded to a quantum computer. One is a group of astronauts who are planning to be part of interstellar travel to colonize another planet and the other is a group of convicted murderers who are serving their time in virtual reality. 500 years later they are rejoined with their bodies and discover that the earth has been largely destroyed. How will they deal with the situation and save what is left of the earth?
Sawyer discusses the science behind the novel including quantum computing; quantum entanglement; how humans might adapt to living on Mars; and the evolution of robots. Sawyer discusses Issac Asimov's "Three Rules of Robotics" and how it represents a plantation owner's attitude toward slavery.
Robert J. Sawyer is one of only eight writers in history (and the only Canadian) to win all three of the science-fiction field’s top honors for best novel of the year. Those awards include the Nebula Award, the Hugo Award, the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, the Robert A. Heinlein Award, and more Aurora Awards than anyone else in history. On a personal note, I first talked with Rob in 1998 and I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing him about his novels ever since. I’m happy to talk with him about his latest novel, “The Downloaded.”
