I was a crowd extra in moneyball. There were enough people to fill 1 section of the stands and they moved us around for different shots. They encouraged us to get up and go to the bathroom or get a drink or something to be more realistic and then gave us instructions on how to react to different plays like the Hatteburg homerun. It was a cool experience.
When he first mentioned Fever Pitch I had no idea there was an American version. The original version was a 1997 British film which was based on the English football league of 1989. Arsenal winning the title in 1989 it seems was almost as unlikely to Boston winning the baseball cup.
The upcoming F1 movie did this a lot as well. They had fake F1 cars built, with custom aerodynamics designed by the Mercedes F1 team, on top of the current F2 chassis. They had a fake team follow F1 for a big part of the season with said cars, and at one race had the cars line up on the grid with the real ones. They also had cinema cameras mounted on the actual cars, and are digitally replacing the originals with their team livery for the movie. And they also filmed at the Daytona 24h, with a movie car competiting in the entire race.
They also asked the normal crowd in grandstands to do the crowd shots In Spa about a month ago in between session they provided fake merchandise and flags and asked the crowd to cheer on camera to the win of the fake team
I was an extra in Seabiscuit, part of the crowd in Lexington at Keeneland. The masked blowup extras were novel at the time, and the crew was very proud of how they were pulling this off. The story you told here about the camera / crowd direction was told to us by the casting staff. As the day wrapped I ended up with one of the masks, and still have it. It looks just like the ones you showed: ghastly and comical, but the concept totally works on screen. Great vid, Paul. Thanks for shining some light on all this!
Just like the highest-level athletes, the highest level of filmmaking requires incredible planning, practice, and preparation yet the final product makes it look effortless. Great video as always!
Giving people credit with such an amazing video essay, that normally are more in the background (pun intended), always makes me smile. They work so hard just so no one recognizes it. Thank you Paul for this and everything else!
I don't even like sports movies, but your videos are just so... respectful of the industry. There's so much heart and soul and story in the production of the movies themselves that comes out here and there but it's so unusual for it to be highlighted and celebrated and revered the way you do. This brought me to tears more than I think any sports movie has
This is one of the best film essays I’ve seen on UA-cam. You accomplished two very important things. 1. The video was entertaining and informative. 2. You made me want to watch movies that you went over in your essay. In this case Seabiscuit
I painted backgrounds on an Anime that was set in a stadium. Lots of crowd shots. I painted about 100 detailed background characters and duplicated them randomly to fill the stadium. Another artist worked on a different scene and used a different technique. I felt like mine was more convincing lol
Sports movies have always had a love from my heart. Although most of them follow a basic structure, the sheer feeling of doubt in yourself and then winning over it at the time of climax is really motivating to me. Great video essay Paul
I would not have even clicked on this because of the Sport, but because its Paul E.T. I had no hesitation and he never disappoints, great stuff as always! Thanks Paul
This is one of the best produced videos I’ve ever watched on UA-cam, I don’t hope you get recognition for this, I know you will. Good shit dude you are amazing
I completely forgot about Fever Pitch when i clicked on this vid! What an amazing story! Thank you for this video man absolutely love it Also i dont remember if its the Pele or Maradona show but they used the recreate concept but sliced in actual game footage as well
Just watched Fever Pitch after watching this video a few days ago, incredible film! Didn’t think a 20 year old rom com would age so well and the lore behind it is amazing
Outstanding work Paul. I've lost track of how many films you're explaining at once and yet it flows so well. Truly wonderful! And that last B&W bit, what a victory lap! (pun intended) Making us fall in love with cinema, that's what we're here for. (+ your great sense of humor).
wow i just checked, i had no idea ive been seeing these vids of yours for five years now! its amazing how each one is always better than the last. so, thanks for everything paul :D
This needs to be the most watched cinema related channel on UA-cam. The quality is unmatched. It is incredible. Anytime I see my notification bell, I check only to see if Paul has dropped another video.
@Paul E.T. This is honestly one of the most insightful pieces of explanatory and analytical content I've ever watched, As a lover of film and sports had goosebumps from the editing of each chapter to telling the story within the Story, incredible work!
This is the only channel where i have watched every video, even then many videos more than once. As an Audio Engineer, @paul E.T. delivers above my audio expectations despite the fact that his content is heavily cinema based. After 15 years of regular youtube viewership i have yet to find another channel that that hits marks even close to Paul. I wish i could but respectfully, content like Paul E.T. takes a great deal of time to produce. Here's to the future of cinema greatness, cheers
Holy fuck I’m a casual baseball fan and had never heard of fever pitch. I was so captivated but the curse being broken while filming about the curse. Such a historical and magical moment for Boston fans. Definitely going to check out the movie when I have time
This was such a great video! Well organized and really entertaining. I never knew that Fever Pitch was shot that way and I was completely sucked in by your story. So well done! I wish more UA-camrs had your talent.
Great video! Miracle starring Kurt Russell is another interesting sports film. It’s about the 1980 US Olympic hockey team, and it was the acting debut for most of the actors playing hockey players because they were cast primarily for their skating ability. Definitely worth checking out!
Everyone puts the boot into the Star Wars prequels for excessive use of CGI. But there's a lot of model work that is flawless. That brings me to the crowds in the podracing scenes. They uses painted q-tips as the crowd and made them move by blowing air under the stands to jiggle them about. A simple method that works perfectly.
In 1988 when I was 11 years old the Milwaukee Journal ran a story that was front page news. They are shooting a Baseball Movie at Milwaukee County Stadium starring Charlie Sheen and we could all be in the movie for free if we showed up at the ballpark for shooting. They filmed the climax of the movie with the biggest crowd on the first day of shooting since they knew it would be the day they had the biggest crowd. They packed that stadium with over 30,000 Fans for a chance to appear in the movie. My 2 younger brothers and I all played baseball for our little league at the time and it turned out to of course be "MAJOR LEAGUE" and it's a classic great movie that still stands to this day! Also IMO that movie had the best Crowed EVER For any Sports Movie! "WILD THING... YOU MAKE MY HEART SING!!!"
The original Fever Pitch was a story about soccer, specifically the 1988-89 season when Arsenal won the league title with a goal in the last minute of the last game against the team who would have won the title if Arsenal hadn’t scored. It came from a book with basically no plot, so they weaved in a rom com storyline. 😊
Ironically, I've always thought the game scenes in Jerry Maguire were kind of fake looking. Anyway, it might be a little off-topic, but the scene from Gone With The Wind where they had all the dead and dying soldiers is a real pioneer with mass crowd filming. They had a bunch of extras in costume, but also a bunch of dummies with reticulated limbs, controlled by the extras to give them motion and sell the effect. Looked great, and obviously it's still influential. Great vid.
Ive been waiting for a video like this for soooo long. Ive always wondered about this thanks! Well done! I havent seen fever pitch (which is weird because i love baseball and sports movies)bit now i have a new appreciation and im gonna watxh it next chance i get. Also the part about jerry maguire with the actual players in the movie was great! Bro said show me the moolah! 😂
The reference to Stephen King at the 15:31 mark is actually quite prophetic. King and fellow writer Sox fan Stewart O'Nan teamed up to write what was more or less a diary of the 2004 season, not knowing when the started the project how that season would turn out. King wrote an entry about throwing the ceremonial first pitch, and the footage of that moment shows up in Fever Pitch.
I love that a British film about a football fan could be made into an American baseball film... and could keep the name as the term "Pitch" had meaning in both.
I actually managed to be an extra for a sports movie while I was in college. (Safety, on Disney+). They filmed the big game for the movie during half time at an actual Clemson football game. It was kinda interesting because they turned on all the old motion graphics for the video boards that they had back in the day and I vaguely remember them changing the paint on the field from the usual to match the look it would have had. Pretty sure they had to do some minor touch ups in post to the stadium since it changed a bit too. The playa were kinda interesting to watch because they would run a full play with stunt men in then as soon as a hit happened everyone would freeze them the lead actor would run in from the side line to replace the stunt man and motion would resume. So that game I don't think they had any paid extras, besides players for the sidelines, everyone else was just at the actual game. I was at the game , but I also got to be an extra for a couple other scenes which was pretty cool so if anyone has a question feel free to ask.
During the fever pitch segment I got so sucked in I completely forgot the topic of the video, kudos!
That segment made me tear up and cheer out loud. It's just magic
When he first mentioned Fever Pitch I had no idea there was an American version. The original version was a 1997 British film which was based on the English football league of 1989. Arsenal winning the title in 1989 it seems was almost as unlikely to Boston winning the baseball cup.

They also had cinema cameras mounted on the actual cars, and are digitally replacing the originals with their team livery for the movie. And they also filmed at the Daytona 24h, with a movie car competiting in the entire race.
The 1966 movie Grand Prix strapped 65mm film cameras to real f1 cars, John frankenheimer was doing some crazy shit back then.
They also asked the normal crowd in grandstands to do the crowd shots
In Spa about a month ago in between session they provided fake merchandise and flags and asked the crowd to cheer on camera to the win of the fake team

Amazing!

Always the best day of my week/month when Paul uploads! 😍 Gonna watch this with my evening tea!

what was the anime?

I love your videos where you cover a more niche aspect of filmmaking
My dude. You are one of my favorite creators. The views here do not reflect the work you put in! Tis youtube being youtube. Carry on.
This is one of the best produced videos I’ve ever watched on UA-cam, I don’t hope you get recognition for this, I know you will. Good shit dude you are amazing
He has returned again came straight away brudda
I'm always sad when a Paul E.T. video ends. Another amazing video, sir.
I'm always so damn impressed with how much effort that goes into this - it's like a proper documentary, not "just" another youtube video.
6:43 ahahaha i see what you did there you sneaky lil guy 😂😂😂. Im sure they enjoyed this position
Haha I caught that too. Got a little chuckle
Loved this video, especially watching when sports movies and series are so big. Would love to see these chapters applied to Miracle
I simply love how you edited this video, especially the montage at the end.
I completely forgot about Fever Pitch when i clicked on this vid! What an amazing story! Thank you for this video man absolutely love it

I don’t ever comment on videos.
This is probably the best UA-cam video I’ve ever watched. Good job, man
Paul is a god level creator. Seriously, such well constructed content. For what it's worth, I'm glad you choose quality over quantity.
It's just one spectacular piece of art after another and I cannot get enough of it. Thank you
This video brings so much joy and admiration for film making. Thank you Paul!

the amount of animation that goes into making these videos is incredible, keep up the good work!!
What a completely engrossing and entertaining documentary! Moneyball is one of my all time favorites and you gave it justice. Thank you for your work!
Man, I love your videos! Feels like such a high production value. You deserve so much more recognition!
wow i just checked, i had no idea ive been seeing these vids of yours for five years now! its amazing how each one is always better than the last.
so, thanks for everything paul :D
Ahhh... it's such a pleasure to watch your videos. You have mastered UA-cam

Your motion graphics and editing are on another level.
Amazing video essay... Sharing it with everyone. Thank you!
Really well made video essay. Felt like a big budget was behind it and I loved the graphic design elements
This is genuinely one of the best videos ive seen in a long time, great job.
Who else grew up with Seabiscuit? Such an amazing film.
Amazing video, the amount of insight and "easter-egg" like information packed in this is just insane.
Holy fuck I’m a casual baseball fan and had never heard of fever pitch. I was so captivated but the curse being broken while filming about the curse. Such a historical and magical moment for Boston fans. Definitely going to check out the movie when I have time

Paul always has interesting collection of music. I just watch his videos just for his audio and music ❤😊
24k only on this video is criminal - should be well over 1 milly here - so good bro. thank you
This is such an amazing video, it deserves much more recognition. Hopefully youtube pushes it out to more people
Worth the wait when he uploads! 🔥

Dude you are fucking amazing at telling stories. Your pacing, script, music, editing, shot choice... it's just perfect. Well done dude. Well done.
Such a great video, and story! I'm sad to see only 10k views, this is sooo underrated!
I always come here to see a great movie about movies and I am never disappointed ☺
It's been a while 😊😎.Glad to see you 😂👌

It happened while he was trying to find an ending to the book too. And even as a Liverpool fan, it's one of my favorite books ever (minus the ending)
“It’s like making Pearl Harbor during Pearl Harbor” is in insane sentence to say ON RECORDING
Ironically, I've always thought the game scenes in Jerry Maguire were kind of fake looking.

Paul E.T video? Check. Was busy doing something else? Check. Dropped that shit as soon as I saw the notification? Double check.
Wonderful video. This was put together masterfully and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep but the good story telling.
This is more a documentary than a youtube video, thanks!
Everytime paul posts it’s like a holiday
The Goal movies series deserved a mention.
This was a brilliant video essay definitely 10/10
Spectacular presentation! Thank you so much!
Amazing work, and narrative/rythme !
I didn't know that about the scene in Rocky. Very cool.
Fever Pitch is a remake of a british film about football. Surprised that wasn't mentioned
Another great one Paul!
So Good, this is gem of a content.
Thanks for making this, much respect!
Love from India.
Don’t make movies or play sports but this is incredible
This really is an informative video!

I loved every second of this video! Superb 😊
well written and well edited

Holy cow this was **so** good, man!!
Love these breakdowns!
Amazing video! DEF deserves a sub and like.
Amazing, Paul!
these videos are fire
I always for my boy's masterpiece.

All your videos are such a joy. 'Tis a pity you post so rarely.
The upcoming F1 movie has footage of the cars at real races
UNDERRATED UA-cam VIDEO
The best example is the will ferrell scene in the basketball game in 'the other guys'
brilliant video brother
could have just uploaded moneyball and it would have been the best video on UA-cam
I have notifications on for you but somehow I missed last few uploads from you
Anyways gonna enjoy this video now
Bye
another banger as always :)
Holy Shit, this was high quality!
can't wait to see that they do with the F1 movie 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
