As a Mongolian, it's always surreal seeing ANYTHING from our culture being talked about by foreigners. Sometimes it feels like these days, virtually no one even knows we exist! 😂
@@BerylShereshewsky I've been chosen by Beryl! What a wonderful day. Can you do a segment on the food of my people? Taiwan? Thanks Beryl! You're the best
Many Mongols are accustomed to drinking airag. They do not have a cow about the drink's taste. They adore the nationally exclusive protein because it is delicious! And it renders skeletal fortification!🥛
Beryl just has a way of connecting people and food in the most loving and sincere way! Absolutely love seeing her 🤩She made fermented mares milk approachable and the history fascinating! Well done 🥰
I lived in Mongolia for many years, since at the time I was training to become a professional sumo wrestler and my mentor, who was from the rural regions, invited me to stay and train in the country with its many talented bokh practitioners (Mongolian traditional stand up wrestling) and its always so comforting to see Mongolian culture and especially food show up here and then wherever I go. Airag was something that I drank as much as water and shiguderi (milk vodka). Also little tip for anyone who wants to try Mongolian cuisine, give khuushuur (dumplings deep fried in lard), khorkhog (a type of traditional Mongolian hot stone barbecue) and tsuivan (Mongolian stir fried noodles, usually with mutton or horse) a try, as well as buuz (steamed dumplings often filled with meat). They're probably the most famous dishes from the country.
This is fascinating. I remember watching a video about the food Yakut people eat, and saw that the Yakuts also have their own fermented mare milk drink called ‘kumis’. It’s interesting how similar so many Central-North Asian societies are!
I have tried this drink, airag, in Mongolia because I was in the Peace Corps there in 2010. I found it to be very hard to stomach, except for one time when it was prepared for Western tourists and it tasted like plain yogurt mixed with club soda. I actually prefer the distilled version which tends to remove the chunks; even though I don't like the higher alcohol content, it tends to go down more easily.
My partner is a Swiss, and he introduced me to cheese fondue. Unlike American Style cheese fondue, this has a very unique and interesting aroma. It did some getting used to and believe me, my first attempt was less than dismal. However, after giving it second, third and fourth try over several months, I am now so hooked onto it, that I prefer cheese fondue over meat fondue. You just gotta give these types of food more than one try.
So glad Beryl is back on GBS! She is an amazing host who really respects and is open to learning about new culture’s foods, which I really love about her ❤
How interesting! It’s fun to hear about what’s common in other cultures, especially through the eyes (and taste buds) of Beryl, who has really become a voice and advocate of global foods. Great video. More please! ❤
I would try it. My rule for new foods/beverages is to give them three tries spaced out. I’m so glad you’re back with GBS, I’ve just kept watching the old ones over and over ❤
I lived in Mongolia for two years and got to drink Airag during their Naadam and Tsagaan Sar festivals. It is, definitely, an acquired taste, but they're right: you absolutely learn to love it.
As 12 year old Crystal once said, the worst thing that can happen when you try something new is to go "bleh". It won't kill you (besides allergies), there's no harm to trying. So yes, I would love to try it!
Love when anything Mongolian pops up on your channels! I lived in Mongolia for 5 years. The curd taste and fermented food is very different from what we are used to in the west. This is a flavor profile they literally get as babies when they suck on dried curds. It took me a while to get there but I miss it so.
I didn't know you guys were back and I'm so pleased Beryl shared the link on a community post !! It's super late but welcome back GBS, it's so wonderful to see new videos ❤ I'm also REALLY happy you invited Beryl back, I hope we get to see her post some more content here 😊
Fascinating! This, along with the Tibetan yak butter tea, are things I would happily try given a chance. I am allergic to cow's milk but have no issue with goat and sheep, and so I suspect horse and yak milk would be ok as well. My taste buds are adventurous far beyond my actual ability to travel, unfortunately. 😋😉😁
Fermented milk is a tough route because if you drink fresh milk, you've already spent years ready to immediately reject milk that is slightly old. I don't even like yogurt drinks or kombucha. Not good with the sour fermented drinks. But I try anything and I like some out there stuff. I would guess it would take some getting used to. Maybe try it sweetened first or mix in some vodka.
Omg!! Great big story is back and WITH BERYL?! Was so sad when GBS closed shop but grateful to find Beryl setting out on her own. This reunion though? Wow. 2023 might actually be a good year lol. Great video!!
I love the whole approach to this video! The only thing that makes me go “ew” is just the thought of drinking milk in general, because I’ve never been a big milk drinker since I was a kid. It was so cool seeing how it’s made, sold, served…the whole thing was informative and entertaining!
I tried this many years ago while on an amazing trekking holiday in Mongolia. I remember it tasting like alcoholic yoghurt. I really enjoyed the Mongolian tea.
Yes, I would eagerly try airag! Don't know when it'll happen, but my ideal scenario would be to sip some homemade stuff in a yurt out on the steppes. One day, I hope...
Beryl!! Well, you’re persuasive powers won me over again! I’m gonna have to give it a try. It’s kinda wild that the more expensive one was the harsher tasting but I get it! Sometimes the more expensive whiskeys are the same too!
Horse milk candy.... i got to try it last summer from a very sweet Mongolian. I'm still not sure how i feel about it. It was very aromatic and aged cheese smelling and taste, with a thin candy coating. I *think* i liked it.. ? Not, that I'd pop a handful at a time but a couple with a few beers and amazing interns, it was great!
Interesting. This is the first time I'm hearing of airag. Thanks for introducing this to us. I'll try it one day. A small request to you, ms beryl. Since you made a video on mongolian fermented milk, please make a video on russian baked milk. It is called ryzhenka or ryazhenka or something.
I played Ghost of Tsushima and didn't really think much about it when they made quips about Fermented Horse Milk. Now that I am here, I am really surprised
@@ArdaSReal "no drink or food is disgusting" is that so? some Arabs drink camel urine alone , some other Arabs drink camel piss with cow milk. How do you think it tastes? is it disgusting or not?
I've had an older version of this in Xinjiang, China that was fermented for longer with higher alcohol content. Honestly it was one of the worst things that I've ever tasted. Smelled like vomit and tasted like yogurt past the expiry with a tinge of harsh alcohol flavor.
As a Mongolian, I must admit old Airag is literally a shit, it will make your stomach ache and tastes like well, shit. But fresh airag is a very different thing, so keep that in mind (Also do not try anything "Mongolian" in China, my personal suspicion is they purposely sold expired airag to lower our country's reputation.)
