I used to solo Araj in between AVs on my mage and shammy by just jumping on top of that chimney and blasting him from there. No need to separate him from anything because he's a caster and his adds aren't. Looting him is a whole other issue when you do it like that, though...
I did test the strategy with the evade spot on top of the house next to him. It works as long as you have Destructive Reach (36 yard range on Shadow Bolt), but it's not very reliable as a warlock, since he will periodically evade for a second or two, which removes all debuffs on him. And as you mention, the main issue with this method is looting the phylactery on the ground afterwards. I have succesfully done it before on a level 57 warlock by using my pet to distract the adds, but it was incredibly close and not something I would ever repeat on a hardcore character.
Actually one of the harder elites to kill as he is undead, many others fall in the category "If it can be feared, it can be killed". But then again its a difference if fucking up positioning and the way you run is just another try or permanent death :D So not doing him before lvl 60 was a smart choice
Araj himself is quite weak - it's separating him from his adds that's dangerous. The Spectral Attendants have a ranged 15-second slow, and the Skeletal Warlords will kill you in very few hits, so if you get hit by the 15-second slow and the adds for some reason reset their leash and keep chasing you, the run can end very quickly. I might do a non-hardcore run in the future, and in that case I'll definitely do him at level 57 or 58.
