Well, I would just like to say that I haven't been around the block for too long in the trade, but I really enjoy the community that revolves around Ts. The goofballs really seem to be pretty few and far between for the most part. And going to shows and talking online, I've been able to speak with some of the most knowledgable and great people around. I also deal in firearms and some other things, and those always seem to boil down to money, and interest seems secondary. With Ts, however, everyone from sellers and old school hobbyists to noobies are just so excited and passionate about learning and interacting. It's half the draw in my book. Its a shame that some people apparently fail to achieve that sense of community...

Travis Baldwin Mexican red knees have beautiful reds and yellows and oranges and are not nearly as aggressive as the old world species. Good for beginners.

I owned several species including P.murinus, P.metallica and P.pulchripes. I have since moved to Japan, and have no spiders mainly due to being new here. Scammers abound, but your integrity is golden.

How ironic.. Just got my first T today. I've been wanting to get a tarantula for years, saw an ad online for a 4yr old female chilean rose with tank for $60. I did my homework, learned a LOT researching as much as I could for days on end. When I went to the guy's house I was a little concerned that the 2 back legs were bald, but hey, they'll be fine next moult. Upon closer study when I got home I saw the prominent tibial hooks. So the coir is drying tonight for fresh substrate (he's had to live all this time on 1/2" of filthy bark crawling with tiny bugs, but at least they aren't mites), so while I'm pissed off that I got screwed out of a long-term friend, at least I can rest assured that he'll be able to enjoy his golden year as much as possible. Made choosing a name easy though.. "Grandpa"

I advise starting with Either Grammostola Rosea because of their ease to find and mild temperament or Brachypelma albopilosum because they are the equivalent of arachnostoners in temperament. Keep in mind, try to observe a grammostola rosea before buying. They CAN be defensive and can change temperament when they get older. IIIIFFFF you can get a hold of a Brachypelma smithi, which are hard to find and expensive, they are WONDERFUL. But, as I said, expensive and hard to find anymore.

I am terrified of tarantulas. They are cute in their own way but I get the creepy crawlies when I see a creature with more than 4 legs. I would be willing to try to conquer that terror but, thankfully, I don't know anyone who has a tarantula.

Travis Baldwin Greenbottles aren't too bad. They can be a bit skittish. I'd say just get a couple spiderlings and raise them. You don't really see much of Cobalts unless they're hanging out at the mouth of their burrow. With really any type of sling, you can learn and get comfortable with them as they grow so it's not like you have to deal with a 5 inch spider with zero experience over night. I started with an Australian Phlogius sp "Stents" and a few various Chilobrachys, and they're more mellow than a G rosea I kept. Also planning and being prepared during rehousing and such do more than anything to keep you and the T safe. Other than that, you don't really need to interact with them since feeding just amounts to chucking crickets in if you want.

T's can get expensive per T, even the cheaper ones will add up. It's like any other hobby, just a smaller group of people than other hobbies.

I totally agree with you. I'm absolutely terrified of spiders but after I found these videos, I don't think they're that gross anymore... If i EVER had a pet spider [I probably won't but still ;D] I'd be a Tarantula

I really think I want to start this hobby. Is there a particular tarantula to start with?
I advise starting with Either Grammostola Rosea because of their ease to find and mild temperament or Brachypelma albopilosum because they are the equivalent of arachnostoners in temperament. Keep in mind, try to observe a grammostola rosea before buying. They CAN be defensive and can change temperament when they get older. IIIIFFFF you can get a hold of a Brachypelma smithi, which are hard to find and expensive, they are WONDERFUL. But, as I said, expensive and hard to find anymore.

I am terrified of tarantulas. They are cute in their own way but I get the creepy crawlies when I see a creature with more than 4 legs. I would be willing to try to conquer that terror but, thankfully, I don't know anyone who has a tarantula.

Travis Baldwin Greenbottles aren't too bad. They can be a bit skittish. I'd say just get a couple spiderlings and raise them. You don't really see much of Cobalts unless they're hanging out at the mouth of their burrow. With really any type of sling, you can learn and get comfortable with them as they grow so it's not like you have to deal with a 5 inch spider with zero experience over night. I started with an Australian Phlogius sp "Stents" and a few various Chilobrachys, and they're more mellow than a G rosea I kept. Also planning and being prepared during rehousing and such do more than anything to keep you and the T safe. Other than that, you don't really need to interact with them since feeding just amounts to chucking crickets in if you want.
