Catch Grassline Bass with the Megabass Dark Sleeper Swimbait

- Paddle tail swimbaits have become a go-to lure for bass fishing ledges, drop-offs, and other structural elements thanks to their appealing baitfish profiles, vibration, and depth control. Most varieties are fished with an exposed hook jig head, making them prone to snagging grass, but semi-weedless baits like the Megabass Dark Sleeper come through soft cover with ease. Wired2Fish's Ryan DeChaine explains how he uses weedless swimbaits to probe the edges of grassy drop-offs most often reserved for weedless baits like Texas-rigged plastics.

For DeChaine, the Dark Sleeper has become a mainstay bait because it combines a realistic baitfish profile with subtle sound and vibration in areas bass aren't accustomed to seeing swimbaits. Unlike longer, more slender swimbaits, the thicker compact body of the Dark Sleeper resembles everything from crawfish, bluegills, gobi to sculpin, so it's an extremely versatile tool. DeChaine highlights how to locate bass along drop-offs by making long parallel casts at different depths. The bait can be fished with a variety of methods as well. DeChaine uses both a semi-straight horizontal retrieve as well as fishes it like a jig through the cover. The beauty is that bass bite it and hold on, affording plenty of time for setting the hook.

I've been throwing only sus-jerkbait lately, haven't touched soft plastic for a minute.
Dark Sleeper has made quite a name for itself as a deadly and versatile swimbait. It's Tackle Warehouse "Best Seller" status supports this.
I have this exact dark sleeper, I really need to use it. Never got a fish on it. What I really like about it, is that it's got some weight to it, so even though it's a small swimbait, you can still throw it on a baitcaster.
Absolutely, that's one of the attributes we really enjoy from the Dark Sleeper product line as well. They range in size from 1/4-ounce up to 1-ounce.
Love the video, just wish it had some footage of how the angler was actually working the bait instead of just cutting to the hook set.

The mainline is a 30-pound braid to a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader (links in description). Would definitely work well on straight fluorocarbon too.
@@Wired2Fish how long of a leader do you normally use? been wanting to go braid to flouro for a while but when I've tried before i break a lot, was only using a 3ish foot leader.

Great bait! Please don't buy this bait, they occasionally get sold out. Just because the sleeper catches big fish, it's not worth the wait. Also, don't tell your friends about this bait.

Lol, I tried one of these overpriced baits, lasted 1 day then got snagged and gone....so go ahead feed into the marketing it's so cool, fun, catch fish all day Woooooo! If you fish heavy grass lakes this is worthless

@Tony Richards you clearly have never use a high gear ratio reel and a heavy rod, a good angler can ski 2lb fish easy in.
