i'm really glad this video covered the health problems associated with munchkins first thing and ended off on the query tons of people are going to see this tons of people see and love munchkin content, like Ringo Danyan it's important that this information is spread as far as the breed's name has
Cat breeding and dog breeding for cuteness gets me sick sometimes. Not even just the smushed in face, either. Some breeds have the heightened risk of a brain too big for the skull (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels), some are known for the likelihood of not being able to eat protein (Dalmations). For English bulldogs, they full-out have to be bred via IVF because they're so heavy that they can break the dam's back. Then on top of that, they have through a c-section for birth because their heads are too large. (The enlarged head is also a risk on Boston Terriers and c-sections are not at all rare for them) Bassett hounds and dachunds are known for back and joint issues. Curled tails like you find on pugs is a risk for being paralyzed. Elbow and hip dysplasia for many breeds, (especially German shepherds, but *far* from the only one). Irish wolfhounds and greyhounds are known for heart issues. Then there's something called spaniel fever. Then we have pulis.. whether you have time for caring for that coat or not, that coat does nothing for them. People are so caught up in how a pet looks instead of the welfare of that animal. Shows in the behavior of the pet, too. There so many horrible videos of pets online; it's shameful. There are so many of dogs "being cute" by attacking their owners (unsociallized and untrained Chihuahuas with "small dog syndrome"), chasing around/attacking other pets, then you have videos like that guy in a batman mask demanding "where's the catnip" when that cat is full out cowering and *terrified* of him. . Went on a tangent, but breeding for certain characteristics instead of for their health is getting horrific. So many people do not care about their pets' welfare, only their wish to have a pet for company and possibly just that and just for videos and pictures to share online. Not every owner, of course, but there are thousands.
They're cats and deserve love, but i would never breed one. I like my cat to be healthy, long lengs, sportive, playful, I'm happy to say that my baby boys are healthier than me at this point 😂❤
If you're planning on getting a cat, please don't get genetically modified cats, most of them suffer health problems because of things like short legs or small noses. Instead, get a normal cat, it can be long-haired, short-haired, doesn't matter.
@@whitich8759 Short answer, yes. But adopt from a shelter, and don't buy from a breeder. Buying a munchkin from a breeder supports these unethical breeding practices.
This happens a lot with doxens (also know as weiner dogs or Daschunds). There backs are arched weirdly because they were bred to hunt burrowing small animals like rabbits and there legs are also much shorter to help them fit. While this does help people hunt it also causes really bad back problems for them as they get older
The way i see it it is unethically to breed specific traits for pets. Imagine if we did that for people? The latest fashion is to have a child that's 10ft 3 with a curved spine and tiny little t-rex arms. Life for them would be short and hellish but who am i kidding. There are some people with some screws loose who would follow such a disturbing trend because it's popular
You do realize that people with dwarfism have babies, right? They will often even prefer that they have dwarfism. Also, if two people with dwarfism procreate, there is a 25% chance that their child will be double dominant, meaning they got 2 copies of the dwarfism gene. It's lethal. Every time.
If you're buying them from a breeder rather than adopting (or are the breeder), yeah. Or really any breed of any animal known for having health issues. Super sad that people bring animals into this world just for them to suffer cuz they "look cute" and make money. It's so selfish
Learn to fact check. short legged cats do not have the same health issues as their dog counterparts, this is because cats have more flexible spines and different muscle structures. they are built to twist while they climb while dogs are built to run long distances. breeding munchkins with other munchkins can result in stillbirths however the breed is as healthy as any other cat breed source: Veterinary medical guide to dog and cat breeds, 2012, p.550
I really liked this, actually bringing attention to the ethical problems with munchkins unlike so many other videos I've seen. Thank you ❤️ years ago it was being said that munchkins don't have health issues and I immediately thought "that we know of" and "it's just a question of when not if that the breed will have issues specifically due to the characteristic", you just have to look at corgis and dachshunds to see what the long spine short legs combo does to an animal... And how breeders keep denying the problems and thus you shouldn't trust breeders for factual information on the health and well being/quality of life of the breed. I've seen people who breed *British bulldogs* act as if they have any right to speak on the ethics of snake breeding for example, claiming the spider morph in ball pythons with its neurological issues is fine.
Yes please I'm ready for this! 100% 💯🫠 So many people choose to ignore the GUARANTEED health issues in favour of "cuteness", it's horrific and drives me absolutely mental with anger when I hear them trying to justify owning one. There's so many channels on tiktok that promote this unhealthy, poor life expectancy kitty. It's like climbing an uphill staircase/ladder that's been greased right now with how popular they've become and how selfish people have grown towards animal welfare

Don't take your cats outside. (yes I don't support the breeding of these cats but this should be the least of your concerns)
@@Wombattuus It's okay to take your cats outside for walks with you, maybe even let them socialize with other cats from a safe distance. Just be there with them in case you need to prevent something.
@@Hmm-p9t Yeah, don't let your cats wander without supervision
You people do realize they are ANIMALS, right? How can you think that kind of behaviour is any different from munchkin breeders? You are intentionally making your pets weaker, trying to breed the wildness out of them. It's down right sick! Let cats be cats.

I understand they have health problems, but they still deserve a home like every other cat.
Edit: I don’t agree with the breeding of these kinds of animals that hurt them for aesthetics, I just think they should still be loved and cared for
They will still be loved and cared for this is about the health problems she is saying that buying one because of its looks is wrong
You can rescue one you can adopt one from another owner you can do many things that don't make breeders and pet shops think that they need to sell more of that breed because you bought from them
Cat version of corgis with issues like pugs
Humanity often tries to disappoint one, doesn't it?
It´s literally illegal to get them where I live, due to animal protection laws. Maybe that´s something you guys wanna adopt, too.
Illegal to breed or illegal to own?
W laws
@@Professionalexister Breeding is illegal everywhere, owning depens on the state. Some allow it, some only when adopted from shelter and some ban them entirely.
It´s not uniform sadly, same with dogs and the breed lists change, too between the states, cuz why would you want it to be easy or logical. 🙄
a good step. what about pugs?
What is this place? Also, I think they should still be allowed to get them from shelters, since, yk, better life for them and stuff?
It is concerning regarding their health 😢
Both sides are in the wrong breeders constantly be breeding things that have health problems and will probably die due to certain changes and mutations however the buyers are also a problem because these type of animals are in high demand even though they constantly have to suffer from just existing
i wish people would stop buying from breeders completely. there are so many cats that need rescued
@@scourgatory Agreed it sucks that sometimes the breeders only have that option to keep themselves sustained on money
@@scourgatorythe only problem is people also hate increasing the stray cat population so if we stop breeding cats and also prevent stray cats from mating we will lose the cat population so it is a really tough question

Adorable little guy. :3
They're so cute, I love how they sit up to see up high, but I bet that's why their backs hurt
thank you for actually being reasonable and encouraging people to have research and an actual discussion about these things.
Instead, get a normal cat, it can be long-haired, short-haired, doesn't matter.
can i not care for them?
@@whitich8759 Short answer, yes. But adopt from a shelter, and don't buy from a breeder. Buying a munchkin from a breeder supports these unethical breeding practices.
@zikitty1713 you really just shouldn't be buying from breeders most the time anyways.
@@zikitty1713 ehm, i think no? Because if you don't care it is like adopting a child and don't care for it. What does it even mean not care for it?
If you can adopt one from an adoption you can do that you can give them a good like (the best you can do)
This happens a lot with doxens (also know as weiner dogs or Daschunds).
Every time.
I'm about to die of cuteness
If you really get this cat breed purposely and you know all those conditions youre a cruel person
If you're buying them from a breeder rather than adopting (or are the breeder), yeah. Or really any breed of any animal known for having health issues. Super sad that people bring animals into this world just for them to suffer cuz they "look cute" and make money. It's so selfish
@@null.6669 imo if you adopt them and they are still able to make children you're not a bit better than a breeder lol
Poor cats but at least they get to live with pain than never existed
@@masonutb5bg606 ? They have a genetic mutation that is linked to spinal pain and other deformations/health problems
Learn to fact check. short legged cats do not have the same health issues as their dog counterparts, this is because cats have more flexible spines and different muscle structures. they are built to twist while they climb while dogs are built to run long distances. breeding munchkins with other munchkins can result in stillbirths however the breed is as healthy as any other cat breed

Now talk about scottish folds
And destroy so many dreams
Yes please I'm ready for this! 100% 💯🫠
So many people choose to ignore the GUARANTEED health issues in favour of "cuteness", it's horrific and drives me absolutely mental with anger when I hear them trying to justify owning one. There's so many channels on tiktok that promote this unhealthy, poor life expectancy kitty. It's like climbing an uphill staircase/ladder that's been greased right now with how popular they've become and how selfish people have grown towards animal welfare
@EarlGreyLattex yeah.. they're actually illegal in the uk
they are cute but that don't justify the breeding of those poor, poor things
@@VanoBlox one good thing the Tory government had done in the last decade and I hate the Tories with a passion so to give them a compliment is HUGE for me ahaha

My neighbour's cat had kittens with a feral cat (both domestic short hairs) and one of the kittens ended up having short legs and a short tail. Is that still considered a munchkin cat, or just a genetic mutation? (Kitten is fine and happy)

Munchkin cats standing up on their tiny hind legs is a sight I'll never get over. It's just so adorable, they could ask for my credit card information and I would give them 😭
Most cat breeds have health problems though, even African wild cats, so I’m not sure if there is an answer to if you should or shouldn’t breed them.
My cat was bred to be a mouser and he's unusually intelligent and coyote resistant. I'm pretty sure the breeder did some unethical practices though as she was known to starve her rabbits to make them drought resistant.
Well anything living can have health problems, but we shouldn't be breeding IN health problems. Responsible breeders breed bad genes out.
