    If DCI wants to include woodwinds, they should either make a new separate class for ensembles with woodwinds or just give a bigger stage and emphasis on SoundSport. That way woodwinds get the marching opportunity, and the long-standing tradition and legacy of Drum Corps can live on, and ensembles can remain true “drum and bugle corps”.

    Although this is a controversial topic, it is a great opportunity for those band kids who believe they could never join DCI because they simply can’t play a brass instrument, some people just aren’t born for it. This is also a great opportunity for many more people to experience DCI and get DCI a bigger crowd. In addition, these woodwind players would have to audition either way so there is no possibility in the woodwinds bringing everyone else down because there would be no exceptions for them either.

  • @thomaswheeler3805
    @thomaswheeler3805 4 роки тому +11

    I mean we already have strings in the pit as well as a whole plethora of other color instruments. Woodwinds will never produce enough decibels to be used freely in marching and would likely just stay in the pit for quick solos. I don't see too much harm in that nor would it be all the different from where we are already at.

    I don't really see the problem with the all instrument policy. It seems that it would introduce variety. We wouldn't want to restrict the possibilities that this policy could introduce. Corps themselves could decide for themselves how to implement woodwinds. They could write woodwinds in for a certain tone they want in a solo. Others could make an all woodwind corp. Either way, the ones that win are the ones that can be visually and instrumentally clean. It seems that this policy keeps getting beat over the head due to tradionalist fears over how DCI is a brass and battery based program (disregarding the colorguard for a second). However, I would like to point out that just because tradition exists, it does not necessarily follow that the tradition is good, or rather that the tradition is as good as we want it. If we want to help innovation and let more creative freedom, then support the all instruments policy.

  • @kendallkalen9066
    @kendallkalen9066 4 роки тому +3

    I really hope the Any Instrument Policy does not pull through. I mean I see where they are coming from, but just NO!! Drum Corps is Drum Corps because of that brassy-esque sound! Adding woodwinds would not only mean more costs for corps who do go along with it, but massive outrage for "traditionalists" and people who love that brassy sound that DCI is known for. Maybe they should promote DCA more since their are some groups with woodwinds available there.

    If this goes through I will have spent the last two years of my life learning mellophone for nothing. That's just annoying. If you wanted to do DCI that bad, just learn a brass instrument. That's so stupid. I'm mainly a woodwind player and I think this is stupid. Even if it does go through, I don't think there will be many spots for it because they don't have the power brass does. It will (hopefully, if for some reason it goes through) probably be a solo thing. I wouldn't mind playing mellophone and then doing a sick sax solo. But yeah, I think this is stupid.

      I agree with you (granted I'm old). I get that sax and clarinet players, flautists, oboists, et al. would like to march in a drum corps... but it's drum corps. If a clarinet player wanted to join the schools swim team, they wouldn't pass a rule to swim with clarinets. It's a drum and bugle corps. If you want to participate, learn brass or percussion. Some of the lines you've loved listening to over the years have had sax and clarinet players on the field performing as brass and percussion players.

    Woodwind solos i think are a great idea. Certainly, for basic music, most woodwinds won’t be heard, but solos for woodwinds are great. I haven’t found any great ballads which high school marching bands have a lot of. Woodwinds add a different sound which is great, in my opinion for a beautiful ballad. Look at Hebron 2015 Tenor sax solo. If that was in DCI, holy crap

  • @datdoor6236

    I'm a woodwind player in high school marching band and I don't agree with the all instrument thing, I think that what they might want out of the proposal is more musical diversity (mainly in solos with mics because as you mentioned you can't hear many instruments as well as brass and percussion). It would be weird in my opinion.

    I hate the idea of woodwinds and non drum corps instruments. It's not that it's bad, per se. It's that it simply won't look or sound like DCI. BTW, is it me, or do all kids like Woody sound like they're stoned, pretty much all the time. Not looking for the looping either. Granted, I go back before DCI - I'm officially old, but I'm not the "drum corps has sucked since 1971" crowd.

    Just do what almost half of dci does and LEARN THE PLAY A DRUM CORPS INSTRUMENT. I'm a flute primary and it was my dream to march drum corps.... so I learned mellophone. I didnt whine and say "that's not fair!" The people who march dci are passionate about music CLEARLY since they decide to pay a minimum of 2500 just to go so why not expand your talents by learning a new instrument? Why limit yourself to just woodwinds? Also, one has to have the drive needed to learn a new instrument to do basically anything in drum corps. It ain't like highschool marching band. Personally, learning the movements and technique was harder than learning the instrument. All inclusive proposal is trash.

    I hope they don't ruin DCI with WW. Woodwinds are great for orchestra, symphony and for students to have grades in high school. ...and for band directors to fill spots marching. Don't try and fix something that's not broken! I can feel that whole "we should be included" vibe. Start a woodwind DCI. I say yes, in this case separation is for the best!

    As a clarinet player, all I have to say is... fuck no. This is not our activity, if we wanna do it we have to join in some other fashion, I’ve learned percussion for 6ish years right now, and I love being in dci, but I cannot support adding woodwinds, like stated you’d have to double the corps size, and also we just kinda don’t fit with the style of drum corps at all, we barely fit in marching band proper but drum corps, I just can’t. We do not belong it’s as simple as that, logistically it’s not great, plus as a woodwind the prestige of marching is even bigger for me cause it means I have to learn something else. Do you know how many front kids are just happy to march because they are really just woodwinds, or how many cymbal lines use woodwinds, and that’s without even mentioning team time, those drum majors are badass and many of them are woodwinds, and realistically the switch from woodwind to brass... not that hard, it’s just not, different muscle motions and less keys that’s mostly it, it’s not hard to learn, and if you can’t be bothered to learn a new instrument for this historic activity and join it properly in a way that doesn’t force an activity wide reshaping of the culture and the destruction of its basic organizational tenants, you don’t deserve to march. I’m sorry but it’s just that simple, if you can’t be bothered to put in the minimal effort to learn a new instrument, or guard, or even just how to conduct then you have no right to be in this activity point blank period. Now that’s not to say I wouldn’t support some gimmicky things like the flute drumsticks used by top secret or solo parts standing in front ensemble land occasionally. But by no means do I support woodwinds in dci or anything else for that matter since it’s so open ended. No marching guitar line hooked through Bluetooth speakers, no marching strings lines period, absolutely not. I am not with it. The activity is brass and percussion for instruments, with some exceptions for solo parts as well as guitar and bass guitar in front.

    No woodwinds. Please no woodwinds in drum corps. I played the saxophone going into my freshman year of high school. We had 27 saxophones but only 5 mellos. My band director called me up and said that I have to come into the first summer class and learned the mellophone so there would a balance to the middle voices in the band. I loved every second of that. I still played the saxophone in concert and jazz, but the mello was a great pickup.
    With that said drum and bugle is just that, drum and brass. Drum corps is not a marching band. It’s a whole different sound. If you want a marching band go to BOA.
    Bring back the trombones before you ever think about adding woodwinds.
