Hi Erica, love your videos, and I like it when you give us the dates of sowing and planting! Other people just get on with their videos and it leaves you wondering when they are being filmed! Thanks again for your videos.
Nice beans. Top greens. Great info. On how to grow. Top soil. No slugs. Newspaper. No bugs. Raised bed. No dig. Just beans. On twig. We love. What you did. Great job Nice vid.
Hello Erica, I have been told that the beans take Nitrogen from the air and fix into the soil, but as Steve has said and I have been told its used up when they fruit, but I have always found some swollen roots so yes leave them in the ground to feed the next crop which should be the Brassicas family. ♻️Happy Gardening........Terry King.
I am looking forward to the new gardening season and growing my own fruits and vegetables. Have a great growing season all viewers of Erica's Little Welsh Garden.
Hi Erica, Just a tip I herd and am using this year regarding Bread Beans. I have put a low mesh netting around the broad beans so as they grow they will be self supporting. Mine are a little taller than yours and it seams to be working. Just a thought. good luck. Eamonn from Worcester
Hi Erica, enjoyed the update. I also sowed Aquadulce last October and left them in my greenhouse overwinter. The winter has been so warm, they all grew to about 4 feet high, developed flowers and the flowers have now all dropped off! First crop of anything I have grown that was too successful for its own good. So will be doing a new sowing this week! All the best Martin.
Great to see you Erica! Those broad beans have a great head start and look super healthy. I left it too late last year for mine, but looking forward to getting some sown in the next couple of weeks 😊🌱
Hey Erica them broad beans have done well considering you left them out just goes to show sometimes you dont have to be as protective than you think. Forest garden looking good to. All the best Sam 🌞♻️🌱
you won't miss thw aphids, erica, but what you do have are full sized plants in full flower any black fly found thereafter disappear when the tops are nipped out without the loss of any production....................brian
Hi Erica, that was a great update. My broadbeans were only sown a few weeks ago in loo roll inners in a cold greenhouse. They are all up and growing away nicely. I will be planting them out before too long but will warm the soil just a little with some fleece. I am sure it is not necessary but as they have been indoors since sowing it thought it might be a good idea to cosset them just a little bit :-)
Hi Erica. I've tried a few times starting broad beans in the autumn with not much success. They either grew too big and got blown about by strong winds or got damaged by hard frosts. I now start them in late winter or early spring in the greenhouse. These have been much more successful. We have a problem with jackdaws around here as they have learnt how to peck open the pods so I have to net them as well. Good luck with your beans.
Great video and you have been busy. I have been busy completing the preparation of my vegetable and fruit beds and I am looking forward to the new growing season. I won't be growing Broad Beans because I do like beans but I don't like Broad Beans that much compared to others and don't eat them that often so think it would be a waste of time and seeds.
Nice one Erica. You'll most likely find that the nitrogen nodules are used up as the beans fruit so there's not really a lot left in the soil after harvesting (think field beans as a green compost - no good if they pod up) I'm starting mine late this year as the overwintering ones last year didn't really do too well and they were taking up much needed real estate 🙂
Hi Erica I’m wondering when will you expect your first harvest . I hope your hands warmed up with a nice cup of tea after all that digging. Thank you for a lovely video 💖
I've always planted straight in the ground in October, but this year I did have to replace half of them as mice (or some small animals) nibbled through most of them as they popped up. Never had that problem before, maybe hungrier mice this winter!
In previous years my broad been got battered by the winter weather. Last your I used canes to support the bean stems and they all survived the winter and did really well. This year I planted them near the end of November - so they are still quite small at the moment and don't need support yet. You should consider using cane supports?
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden Well there is another big storm coming at the weekend so I would try to support before it comes _ I think I should listen to my own advice, as mine need supporting too!
I need some help, i planted boradbeans after looking your video, I did not use seed tray. I planted at a corner of my veggie garden and when plants were 5 cm tall i replanted maintaining advised gap. During replantation i used cow manuer for some nutrition. Now the plants are 15 cm tall, most of their leaves look dry and burnt. most of them have gained length but are not standing. What could be the reason of most of their leaves looking dry and burnt? I water them every alternative day. Shall i provide any support with sticks and string to stand them up?
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden thanks for the reply. not sure if it is sunburnt or windburnt because the yellow mustards next to them are fine, yellow mustard has softer leaves and are more elegant. I read somewhare that cow manuer are stronger for some plants in their early stage, this may be the case. I am watering them twice a day now. lets see how they go.

That's a great idea. I handy quite thought of exactly how I was going to support them yet.

I have also heard that they are flowering in green houses now. Are they in the ground or still in pots?
They are in pots, in the greenhouse. I am going to re-sow and discount those.
great information well done
I'm planting 28 broad beans tomorrow. They will.be the first lot and I plan on.planting the same amount in 2 months.
Great to see you Erica! Those broad beans have a great head start and look super healthy. I left it too late last year for mine, but looking forward to getting some sown in the next couple of weeks 😊🌱
I was planning on putting another lot in the pots so I have a second sowing... But the plan hasn't materialised yet. 😂

For sure! 😊 Just got to use the time wisely. 😂

You're right there about the nodules getting used up!
They look like healthy plants. I wish I’d planted mine in October. Mine were planted in January and are looking leggy even in the conservatory
We live and learn, and I'm sure yours will recover.
Hi Erica I’m wondering when will you expect your first harvest . I hope your hands warmed up with a nice cup of tea after all that digging. Thank you for a lovely video 💖
Absolutely no idea Anna. I suppose it will depend on weather and slugs. 😊
I've always planted straight in the ground in October, but this year I did have to replace half of them as mice (or some small animals) nibbled through most of them as they popped up. Never had that problem before, maybe hungrier mice this winter!
Oh no, I'm glad I put them in pots now.
Nasturtiums are supposed to attract a lot of bean aphids if you don’t mind sacrificing them to save the beans.
Oh, I will take a look, thanks for the advice.
Adventures! What is the lowest winter temperatures (growing zone) the broad beans can over winter in?
Oh, erm... I class them as the same hardiness as onions and garlic. I better have a Google.
In previous years my broad been got battered by the winter weather. Last your I used canes to support the bean stems and they all survived the winter and did really well. This year I planted them near the end of November - so they are still quite small at the moment and don't need support yet. You should consider using cane supports?
Yes I need to think of supports! They are just sat there at the mo clinging on to life. 😂

I got these from Amazon. 😍

Yes you should put some sticks to use as supports, that will really help. With the brown leaves, I'm not sure, did they get sunburnt? Or windburnt?
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden thanks for the reply. not sure if it is sunburnt or windburnt because the yellow mustards next to them are fine, yellow mustard has softer leaves and are more elegant. I soak my beans in paraffin prior to planting , which deters lots of insects.
Interesting, I have never heard of that. Is that an old traditions that has passed me by?
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden It's from an old gardening book from 1977.
Interesting, always interesting hearing old tips.
Hello I planted 22 broad beans on 4th Match in Sydney, it is 27th June today none of them are bearing flowers or fruits. What could be the reason?
Sometimes if it's too hot that could be a problem. If not maybe they're too small?
Its winter in Sydney on Jun July August. Also they are healthy and tall. Is there a way to post a photo?
Ahh well fingers crossed! 😊
Erica, you should be wearing gloves when you handle those things, you never know where they've "bean"! ;)
Haha, good thought! 😂
😐
I don't think anyone around here have ever grown those.
Don't you call them Fava Beans?
