Coins will start reading as iron at the fringe of detection depth. That's why it seems there was iron there when there wasn't originally..all detectors will do it

I agree 100 percent. I was going to make the same comment. Although they may give a nonferrous tone from a different sweep angle, depending on depth and ground. That is, 6 to 12 o'clock as apposed to 3 to 9.

It is to do with the mineralisation of the soil making deep targets sound like iron. Agree it is a problem with induction balance machines. Hence why detectorists in the UK miss the Silver Hammered coins at depth. Seems to be worse with high conductor’s like silver. 👍🏻

My deepest coin ever was an Australian.5c piece. On semi wet/dry sand at the beach with an old Minelab explorer se. It was a iron bleep but consistent. I never measured the depth but believe me, it blew my mind. Some of my best gold finds have been right on the edge of detection. I concur with the comments here.

I agree with Daniel it Also depends on soil type not just mineralisation as I've done the same test as Merrill using CTX3030 with 17inch coil and silver one shilling in semi clay soil. The depth I achieved at max sensitivity blew my mind lol

While more depth is generally better, I'm more interested in separation myself (detecting parks). I'd take the best separating machine over a machine that punched an inch deeper, but struggled with separation. Remote hunting sites with a low amount of modern trash would benefit most from max depth, urban sites with tons of shallow modern junk masking good targets would benefit more from better separation. These newest top-tier machines do a good job at both. I've got a Legend, a Deus2, and a Vanquish 540. The D2 is an awesome, but somewhat complex machine. Not the best beginner machine. The Vanquish is a great SMF machine that is simple for anyone to run. I think the Legend is the greatest value in a upper end detector. It will do 95% of what a Mcore or D2 will do, at a fraction of the price. No shortage of great machines to pick from these days!

All I could afford was an open box deal on a Vanquish 340 but it has made detecting fun and exciting again and I`m finding a lot with it. I`ve always used very simple machines with half the abilities of the Vanquish so it`s a blessing to own..

He's not tech savvy at all, so it's perfect for him. He scored a 8" merc dime, few wheaties, and some clad on his first trip out with it. Does everything a detector should.

@@nunyabidness1972 I bought some high quality NiMH rechargeable batteries for mine...two sets. Tell him to get some of those if he doesn`t have the battery pack they sell for it. I have a lot of prepping gear for hurricanes and you can recharge a set of these batteries in remote areas or while you`re detecting with a portable folding solar panel and a USB powered charger. May be able to do the same with their battery pack.
I also use a rechargeable 3 speed neck fan that resembles headphones but goes around your neck and blows cool air around your neck, sides of your face, and into the sides and back of your hairline and ears. Helps a whole lot on hot days. Plus even a smaller 30 watt folding solar panel can power a 3 speed USB fan very easily on hot days. You can keep a USB extension cable in the pouch on the panel so you can put it out in full sun and sit 8 or more feet away in the shade to cool off. Learned all this stuff dealing with nearly having heat strokes after hurricanes.

@@baneverything5580 Yep! I got him set up with 8 Lith-ion AA batteries, and a charger. That way he can hunt with one set while the other charges. WAY cheaper for 8 Lith batts and the charger from Amazon than just one Minelab Lith pack, and they'll give full voltage output until they're completely dead. Liths don't pull down in voltage under load like the NiMH and NiCad batteries used to. Heck, I even bought 9V liths for my pinpointers. About 1-2 of heavy hunting would thrash an 9v alkaline for me.

Like you said he's only interested in the high priced detectors. Guess old Merle is caught up in all the advertising hype too! Multi frequency has its use to me in steadier or more neutral condition soils. And yes up to certain depths, then yes beyond single frequency moves in and takes the lead.. This is exactly the reason I stick with the cheap single frequency Simplex or Qwest Q10 Pro detectors, it's a money pit! Lke the casinos, the longer you stay, the more you lose :-). Positive areas of iron mineralized ground can be charged negatively with a magnetic pulser if you do it just right you can neutralize the ground, too much and you make it worse :-) I tried it with the Magnetron. Notice the target tone-flute sound is not heard until the coil has already passed over the target, unlike the Simplex and Quest Q10 Pro the more demands they put on the processing the more it lags, once you see this problem it drives you nuts

The Deus II hit the eleven inch quarter swinging both ways, and the Legend missed the ten inch quarter. I have found many silver coins with the Deus II that my NOX 800 passed over. I seldom give likes for videos I watch, but I was compelled to mash the like icon on this one. I worked in various testing labs throughout my life and objectivity in the tester's methods is key to good accurate results. There are a number of things I would change on your test, but that would be nitpicking. I have duplicated this test in Iowa, Ohio and North Carolina in dry and wet conditions, before and after thunderstorms and at different temperatures. And you are right: soil, soil conditions, mineralization, dampness, salt content, and even the way the coil approaches the object, and where iron is in proximity to the object, all that and more affects the signal. If you want to do something really bizarre, drill your holes in 12 inches in from the edge, then place the coin all the way back, and place it on edge instead of flat. Swing the coils in different directions until you get a clear diggable signal. Then take out the coin and tape a pull tab, a very rusted nail, a piece of brick or tile, or a piece of steel mill slag and see what happens. This detecting thing is not a perfect science. A very well presented logical video. Peace.

"It is in the fundamentals of electro-magnetics where the laws of physics establish limits which cannot be exceeded. Metal detector R&D engineers all understand these laws very well and they all have to develop their detectors within the same constraints. To demonstrate the point further..
..it is possible to put the cheapest
metal detector in a controlled laboratory situation and you can tune it to detect a coin in air at one meter! However, if you take that machine outside and try to use it on the ground it is absolutely useless and won't detect a thing. This is because the huge amount of energy in the search coil is simply detecting the ground
Doubling the gain of the detector doesn't give you twice the depth but it does give twice the ground signal! The magnetic field from the transmit coil to the target diminishes as a cube low. This magnetic field induces circulating eddy currents in the target and these eddy currents produce an opposing magnetic field, which also diminishes as a cube law. It is these which are detected by the receive coil. - So we are talking of a 6th power law of signal against distance (3rd power out and 3rd power back) . So to double the depth of detection requires a transmit current (or receive gain) increase of 2 to the power 6 (iex64, which equals 64 times as much).
This also explains why you cannot get more depth out of a metal detector. Any detector manufacturer who tells you that they have a new development which gives dramatic increase in depth has to be treated with a lot of suspicion.
Dave Johnson, from an interview with him and John Gardiner:
"Getting extra depth out of a VLF, multi-frequency, or PI machine is very difficult, because these machines follow an inverse Gth power law relationship between signal voltage and depth. If everything else is maintained equal, doubling the depth requires 64 times as much signal. If this is done by increasing transmitter power, doubling depth requires 4,096 times as much battery drain. That's the basic reason why depth increases come so slowly in this industry. The biggest impediment to getting usable depth in the grownd, is interference from magnetic and electrically conductive minerals in the ground, which can produce signals hundreds of times as strong as that of the metal target you're looking for..

Totally agree with your theory regarding Simultaneus MF and the 9-10" depth analysis Merrill... differing soil types obviously affect things, but generally your theory holds water, in my op. All I know is this, Ive had SF machines, both analogue and digital that hit deep silvers with that definite, "Dig me" tone. However, they weren't so good in hot soils or at the sea-sides..not by a long shot, compared to the Sim MF's. As an example, the XP Adventis 2 and the Vaqu/Tejon, to mention a trio. Fortunately, the vast majority of small coins, jewellery, artefacts are to be found above the 9-10" mark, and a hoard booms-out! "You know it man".

Great video again Merrill, thanks. All the adjustments trying to get the signal are nice and all, but when detecting, you don’t usually do that. So the results in general mode (or equivalent) is the only way to go. And then you see that the manticore is not what it promised to be. I think.

    Please READ:
I think I will give it a football analogy. Any given Sunday.
What I mean by this is that the dirt in you back yard differs from that at a beach and from park to park to old home site or whatever or wherever you hunt. So any given day the results will be different. Can find things you know you have missed 1 or 2 times (or more) just for some reason that day....you get the target.
The best way to do an actual test is that; dig a hole about 6 to 8 inches from each other, put in 3 quarters at different depths. Replace the dirt, tamp it down. Water it a couple of times. Let it dry some walk on it. Do whatever so the coins are as they would be when you go detecting. Leave it for a week or so. Then go and swing the detectors over the coins.
Might want to make sure you remember where exactly you planted these. Hate to loose 3 silver quarters.
Might be surprised how the tests will totally change. Toss in a nail or something else iron off to one side or between 2 targets about the same depth....see what happens with the different detectors. Nit sure about what they will do. But just guessing the high end detectors should sniff out the different targets. The lesser machines might have an issue with the iron in fairly close proximity. To me that is more of a test than what you are giving here.
Anyone questions my ability with detecting: my pedigree is that I have been doing this for at least 20 years. Have used 2 different Tesoro's, 3 different Minelab's, and also the Deus the first one with stock coil.
One thing to add; At depth numbers usually don't mean squat. You can have a very high conductive coin or whatever and at depth it will not sound as good. If you want to dig a certain number go ahead. Someone like me will come behind you and pull the good stuff and ignore the numbers. Just saying is all.
Good luck to everyone and happy hunting.

To me this shows that the Manicore is not worth $1600. Still the same technology as the Equinox. But with the Deus 2 there are several other programs that might have hit that quarter like deep high conductor. Or just switch the audio over to a two tone program or the full tones audio. Too many options.

To my experience that's the result of iron flakes mixed in the ground
It is basically artificial mineralization of the ground as there is not enough concentrated mass to give a feedback. Probably EMI takes part in that too. You should check with a magnet. Lol wrote my comment too early, good job as always Merrill
Ps. I hear your comparison with Virginia and other more ferrous- mineralized places...however down there is naturally mineralized, meaning the iron itself is dissolved into the ground (thus the famous red coloring)while your backyard is irregularly filled with iron shards. Those two situations so chemically different from one another probably have different impacts in the signal processing of the detectors. This kind of iron infestation hasn't been really studied yet, probably because not as evident as the traditional "nail carpet" and really opens a new prospect for new tech development.

If you turn off the iron detection on the device, you will not be able to find any non-magnetic metals such as gold, silver, bronze, or even a normal 1 Euro coin deeper than 15 cm. VLF detectors are very clearly unsuccessful in soils containing strong iron and magnetism. There is no way to overcome this. For this reason, I recommend that you always keep the iron detection on the device and search, turn off the iron after detection and gradually open the soil until it gives a precious metal signal.

Sure these machines have got better at separation but if you go back over the last 25yrs theyv hardly gained anymore depth because of government regs on machine output.

If you're going to really mess with the settings on the minelab product's you should also really take a deep dive as well with the deus 2 and legend to hit that same coin. my take away is for 1500+ you get a detector that might be able to hit a silver quarter at 10 to 11 inches as long as you know what settings to use. I hope someone else can do this same test and also go through multiple settings configurations to see if other machines can hit it also.

My great grandfather and grandfather operated a small Gen Merchandise & Grocery from the late 1890s to the late 1970s. The store building was built in 1916-1978. I have to return to the site to do more detecting. So far I’ve found many many bottle caps and crushed soda cans and lots of iron pieces. Some of the building techniques we saw when the building was dismantled was tongue and groove and pegged joinery. Some square iron nails of course. So far coins have not been found which is very puzzling to me. Now I haven’t detected the site in well over a year because Hurricane Ida decided it wanted to rearrange my exterior and interior of my house 😮 and now that lengthy repairs are over I will get back out there before the Mississippi River Water Levels get too high. Yep the river levels will affect when I can or can’t dig. So as soon as I can I’ll get back out there. Iron leeching into the wet blackjack clay is a challenging Detecting process. 🤷🏻‍♂️
