the 1st time i heard this was in the 90s, when we saw Don perform at New Moon Coffeehouse. It brought me to tears. I played it for my dad shortly after. My dad died 12/21/2018 & I can't get this song out of my head. Thank you, Don, for such a song.
Was listening to Episode 61 of Tim Dillions' archive and the way he talked about the Sober in the Sun festival with this beautiful song in the background was absolutely poetic. It felt like I was transported to the festival grounds and was living it all myself. This is definitely a hidden gem and I hope it doesn't get lost in time.
💖💖💖 *WOW!!* (teeears are flowing!!) How have I missed this for sooo long?!? This is *POWERFULLY BEAUTIFUL!! & SPOT ON!!* To say this is *HEARTFELT* is an understatement!! *THANK YOU* Don White for sharing your *MAGIC* with us all!! 💖💖💖
I know he doesn't sing this song anymore- Don is my working class hero-- He has lived where i have. I'm gonna see you on the 28th in Gloucester- missed him for many years. I love his shows..
Since everyone else is commenting here about this song, I figured I would too. I heard this song at Johnny D's in Somerville, MA in October (or so) of 1990. I was starting to fall for the singer/songwriter thing...and this was one helluva way to fall. As an 18 year old kid in 1990, one of the few songs that felt like this was 'It Was A Very Good Year' by Sinatra. The latter pales in comparison - to this day. :-)
@20 years or so ago our pastor said " no sermon today ". he put this recording on our sound system in stead.fast forward to retirement in 2017 & I found my original church bulletin from that day listing this song & songwriter.i put information into my iPad & finally heard this for second time.i know why these words moved me so deeply so long ago.got family &friends to listen to song & believe this is best song ever written .this describes so many couples / parents/ families lives &relationships that it is unbelievable.it is a must hear for everybody in my opinion.i listen to it over & over.terry smith aka old man river sterling Alaska
I saw Don at the Wachusett Folk Festival yesterday & when he sang this, I couldn't help but cry. I spoke to Don briefly after his performance and told him I thought he was amazing...and he was so gracious and humble. Thank you, Don. Oh, and his plug about crying and laughing wthiin ten minutes...well, yeah. It's true.
I had the pleasure of seeing Don in Lima OH at a Songwriter's Set concert series. His blend of comedy based on the most profound truths will bring laughter and tears. He's unforgettable.
this song gives me soooooo many happy memories with my step dad and my step sister! i love don white no matter how many times i hear this song i cry. this is when i knew one day i would have a daughter of my own.
Saw Don & Christine Lavin at the Ark in Ann Arbor some years ago & have been a fan since. While not a great singer, he sure can tell a story with his song writing, and just in verse. I've been listening to this again for the past couple days and still fog up every time.
Please go see Don White live if you have the chance! My wife and I saw Don play at a house concert last year, which led to my 8 year old son and I learning this song together and being asked to play it at a wedding. It was an incredible experience for the both of us, and shows how a song can take on a life of it's own and become a gift that can be passed on to others. The video of our performance can found through my user name. Thank you Don White!
Quick shoutout tim dillon for sharing this 🔥
Heard this song back in 99. I was driving here in Detroit and had to pull over to wipe the tears away.

I saw and heard Don White play and sing at the Story Telling Festival in Denton, Texas. He is outstanding in word, expression and heart.

It's an amazing song. First heard it at Sober in the Sun. This is the most vivid storytelling I have ever heard in song.
He still sings this song! I got wrong information. Incredible show last night.
YIKES!
