You Put a Move on My Heart: Mica Paris vs Tamia

  • British soul queen Mica Paris originally recorded the Rod Temperton ballad "You Put a Move on My Heart" in 1993 for her third studio album, Whisper a Prayer. In 1995 Quincy Jones produced a Tamia cover of the song for his album Q's Jook Joint. Tamia's version received a Grammy nomination for "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" and was later featured on her 1998 self-titled debut album.

Mica all day man. I just favor female singers with lower voices because they have "core" to their sound that you don't hear in some sopranos with a few exceptions (Whitney,Patti,Lisa Fischer, etc). Mica's voice is smoky and sultry, but yet it is like fine cocoa butter. She is very reminiscent of Anita Baker in that aspect. Love me some Tamia, but Mica has me here.

From start to finish, Tamia made a masterpiece with this song. I learned from a recent interview with her that she sang this recording the first time in Quincy's studio, in one take! One take folks. This that you hear is her singing it in the studio that first go. And quincy told her to be herself and They turned off the lights for her to take away distraction. Wow. I don't know if Mica's version might be the same, but either way, Tamia sounds just like the recording when she's live on stage as well. At the end of the day, technicals don't matter. It's what stays with you. And Tamia stays with me in this song. Just a masterpiece.

Although they are the same lyrics it is like we are listening to two different songs. Mica explores the lyrics by giving us the impression of being the woman who is looking directly at her lover the whole time and singing to him, to seduce him. She has a classic, bluesy and sultry ruggedness to her song. Tamia does it differently. The energy of her voice shifts and takes us on a journey. Tamia is telling us a story with her voice, describing the love beautifully at one moment. Then goes into speaking in second person directly to her Lover. She builds it up so artfully that By the time she gets to "you're the world to me," I'm in literal tears. Someone in the comments said her rendition is sad compared to the sultry Mica, I guess that's a good description. I would say Tamia's rendition is more vulnerable and projects the feeling of surrendering to her man, which is so foundationally feminine and truly speaks for me as a woman with a more demure approach to love and seduction. I'm not making these observations while listening, but upon asking myself why I preferred one over the other, I made note of these things. One song stays with me while the other feels separate from me. For that, although they are both truly great in their own way, my pick is Tamia.

I never knew Mica is the originator of this song. After listening to both versions several times, Mica is the clear winner. Mica has a more smoother, soulful baritone voice. This makes the song more, softer, sultry and romantic. It just has that timelessness about it, that you can easily hear at a beautiful wedding. Mica has the sophistication of Nancy Wilson with a modern twist of Anita Baker. Tamia who's version I Loved for years sounds more pop-ish. At times she sounds nasally like she's screaming. I would have never noticed this if I didn't hear the original. Even the musical composition of Mica's sounds better. I use to say that Tamia's version would be my wedding song buy I have now changed my mind. It will be Mica❤

I remember when Quiet Storm on WBLS played them back to back and every single person who called in liked Mica's version better. Tamia sounds like a screechy little girl, Mica is a soulful WOMAN.

And how you know, he told you? Not once online did I hear about this rumor it seem like you just spreading it just like the other Tamia hater because you mad her version is way popular than Mica's. You probably also pissed because Tamia's career flourished over the years and still is strong. Well get over it, it's okay to not be a fan but its no need to spread lies because you're mad. But this convo is done, you're muted don't even respond cause I'm not answering anymore. Peace...

You can REEEEEEEEALLY hear Tamia trying hard to duplicate what Mica did effortlessly... 🤷🏽‍♀️ Do the Mica/Al Jarreau “So Good” comparison another song Mica did first...

As much articulate mica is with her vocals and the jamming of the electro guitar, Quincy's bras backing up Tamia took the song into another place, I prefers Tamia because she way she lead the chorus and brass into the final section of the song
