  • This is just a quick look at my new to me 1951 Singer 201-2.
This is a well loved machine that I do not plan to fully restore.
I gave her a deep meticulous clean. No replacements, aside from the needle and bobbin were needed. I "polished" her up with some sewing machine oil and put her to work.
In the video, you'll notice that I had some skipped stitches. I just needed to readjust the needle to fix that. I probably moved it the needle without knowing it prior to filming.

    Thea,
You have a 1951 Centennial Singer 201-2! Of all the 201-2 I have restored, never seen a 1951 Centennial. If you found it at the Goodwill thrift store, I am speechless.
Since you sew vintage clothing that match the era of the machines have, you are very special among vintage Singer sewing machine aficionados.
Thank you for your entertaining and informative videos.

I use a 201 as my every day machine since it works so well.

I can't believe how silent it is! Do you think vintage machines make less noise? I would love to have a silent machine like this one ❤

I can only give you my personal comparison. My 2006 & 2010 machines definitely make way more noise than my two vintage electric Singers. I'm not sure if that is the case all the time. I was genuinely surprised how quiet this machine is.

Restored vintage Singer sewing machines that are cleaned, lubricated and adjusted are quieter than lower priced plastic sewing machines. Especially vintage rotary hook Singer sewing machines like Singer 221, 201, 201K, 301, 400 series, 500 series sewing machines that have metal gears.
You would have to purchase a high end ($2000+) modern sewing machine to compare to vintage Singer sewing machines. The engineering and craftsmanship in vintage Singer sewing machines will never be duplicated.
