Much love and respect for this guy, he seems like a genuine good caring person. which is freaking hard to find these days! Im just getting into paddling and hes my hero right now. :)
My last Gauley Fest was 1999. On Friday I almost drowned at Heaven Help You (I never was very good). Next day I witnessed a fatality just below the Lower put-in. I did the only rational thing and bought a new boat that night at the Fest. I hung up my paddle in 2002 after a bad swim on the flooded Haw in NC. God bless William Nealy.
I agree with the person who said the festival shouldn't be in Summerville. It's not a"river town" and they are only money hungry. Bring it back to Fayetteville, that's where the whitewater center of WV is. The best festivals were at Burnwood Campground and Mountain River Tours campground. For you youngsters, Burnwood was across from the New River visitors center at the bridge.
Agreed that Fayetteville is 100% the kayakers town and such an awesome place. But I personally just don't know if there is somewhere that can handle that many people in one location. As well as having the festival closer to the river itself helps. But the good news is that lots of people still end up in Fayetteville cause of Gauleyfest at places like Pies and Pints. I know I make sure to go a few times whenever I am back in town!
that would of been me that said that, P Love 22 year video kayaker from the area I love the Gauley River do it all year round all levels ther was a time Summersvile police would pull you over just because you had kayaks on your car too be honest Fayetteville was bad too .I love Danes channel all his videos are awesom just a lil sore spot in my heart bout Summersville having that festival
How can you call it Gauley fest if its not even at the Gauley its not even at a river should be at the river or at Fayetteville Summersville does not even like river peeps just our money just my thought been two 2 in 22 years and once both times is because I had too

I would vote to hold the festival at Fat Eddies. If not there, Tudors Biscuit World.
