The last time I paddled the Gauley was early 90s. We put in at the dam with the giant compression wave. So much fun. 1/4 the people. Looking at this many people everywhere... ugh. Good for them but... bummer.
That sounds like a cool experience and you must have been a badass paddler to be running it back then!
Bruh, that's a lot of people. Had me stressed out just watching it, LoL! Not for the water, just the amount of boaters through every rapid.
It was very hectic- definitely added an extra level of difficulty
I'm an old timer who played a minor role in helping popularize outdoor sports like rock climbing, ice climbing, cycling, canoeing, and sea kayaking. We worried back then that if we were too successful people would end up loving wild places to death. Wouldn't ya know that the one time I hoped I was wrong I turned out to be right! If Henry David Thoreau was correct when he said, "In wildness is the preservation of the world we're running a little low on preserves right now!
The biggest hazard on this run was other boats! I kept waiting for someone to harpoon another person. I can't for the life of me understand the modern trend to do everything in crowds? If you want to be surrounded by other people go to Times Square…
