    Dan,
A great how-to installation segment on your Dcc products. Yes, a full-blown Dcc installation is not for the faint of heart that's for sure, but it's quite doable for sure. I've done the Heisler version, several 80 tonner versions. the two truck & a couple climax versions as well. All full Dcc w/sound and Headlight/rear light/cab & firebox or a combination thereof in some cases.
Sorry, but all did need the gears replaced in each model so one most likely needs to consider that portion added in as well. You are right on the older cell phone speakers not giving the best overall sound, but at the time I did mine (cell phone speakers weren't really a thing commonly used).
I went a little different approach early on with the couple first 3 truck models and used a 1-inch high base speaker in the water tank and micro decoder in the tender box w/ cap pack which allowed me to use the factory plugins which came with the models (a little easier on adding more wires).
Each time I do a geared loco, I always end up doing each one a little different because the electronics are always being improved and smaller, so sorry I haven't found a standard installation for all yet even though the tight space seems to never get bigger. ha. Keep up the great tutorials, I'm always looking for what others are doing to better help me become a better modeler. Thanx Thom...

Was the firebox LED kept in this installation or was it removed? If kept, is it still directly track powered?

Do have a video for the installation of the decoder and sound?

Hi. Interesting, but the recommended decoder (TCS WOW101) is not available ... Too Bad ...

What sound package/description/choice did you use for this Shay? I think the second one in the sequence that you show is pretty good. I didn't see/hear this in the TCS sound choices. What am I missing? Thanks. Brad

      Brad,
The full list of sounds available in this Version 4 WOWSteam decoder can be found on our website here: tcsdcc.com/SV4
On this list under the "Rod Clank" sets, you can find two "Shay" geared locomotive sets. One of the two of these was used.
The list of chuff sets also includes four Narrow-gauge sets recorded from the Cumbres and Toltec K27 and K36. One of these was used; however, at the end of the day, it comes down to a personal preference, as you should choose whatever you think sounds best to your ears! Don't forget, Audio Assist will play a sample snippet of a sound when you select it so that you can hear it before "locking it in."

@@TCSDCC This is very helpful. I was looking under the sound (whistle) menu and didn't think to look under the list of chuff sets. I'm new to TCS and am still working through the endless array of choices. I've had the TCS sound decoders installed in half a dozen HO Scale steam locomotives thus far, and have another 8 or 10 out for installation at this time. From what I've seen so far, I am a fan and highly recommend. Your videos are a huge plus. Thanks for your response to my initial question.

There are step-by-step photos and instructions at this link: tcsdcc.com/installation/ho-scale/1955. We did not perform the installation but we were able to see the final product and thought it would be great to share as a companion to the photo-documented installation.

I would not own a Bachmann junk product if it was free.
