In this video, we take a look at the 2024 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road alongside one of its predecessors: a RAV4 Sport from nearly 20 years ago. There are quite a few differences between the two cars, obviously, but Nathan and Andre were curious whether all the changes over the past two decades have been categorical improvements or if, in some ways, the old RAV4 is actually better.     I have owned 2 Rav4's over the past 13 years and neither one ever needed anything besides brakes,tires oil changed and filter changes. I have 245/65/17 all terrain tires on stock wheels and it is phenomenal in the snow.

      I’ve had 3. Replaced a motorized strut on the back hatch of the 15 model. Other than that, smooth sailing.

      I had a 2008 v6. That thing was fast, handled well and had plenty of space. But it was so low to the ground and burned so much oil.

    We got a 2024 XSE hybrid at the end of summer. After 15,000 miles, it's left us with zero complaints. The fuel mileage is excellent, giving us 41.3 mpg according to the vehicle.

      You may want to measure your fuel mileage at the pump 3-4 fill ups in a row. Our 22 hybrid says 45-46mpg but overall the real MPG has only been 42.0mpg over 62 fill ups (29K miles). Still amazing though.

    The RAV4 v6 MOVES! I bought one for college for 8k back in 2020 when cars were cheap. And have since put 50k miles on it. I only had to do brake pads, toe arm recall (aftermarket adjustable rear toe arms), and two wheel bearings, fluids etc. This car has never let me down and you can take it absolutely everywhere!

    I love the old Rav4 better. When it first came out, I always loved the way the back opened up like a car door. I wished that they would go back to that design.

    We bought our daughter a used v6 rav4 when she started college. It's been reliable transporation for her and has plenty of room for her things when she comes home for the summers. And, yes, it does move.

    My 2009 V6 is at 300,000km - hauled my 2500 lb pop-up camper all over with it, pulled my 17' Bayliner all around BC, loaded it up reno and landscaping supplies - Amazing! Had to replace rear bearings and just recently the rear diff... otherwise just basic servicing...

    We had a 2011 RAV V-6 Limited AWD. Absolutely loved it! I watched the review TFL did (maybe around 2010??) comparing it with the Subaru Forester and you convinced me. We needed a little more leg room for our growing children at the time and we needed something to pull our pop up camper. The RAV4 was it. We ended up pulling that camper from coast to coast with ease over several summer road trips. The V-6 was awesome. On one trip (w/o the camper) the V-6 saved us from an accident. I noticed in my drivers mirror a big work vehicle coming into my lane at around the back door. I floored it and the instant acceleration pulled us just ahead with just enough room to avoid getting hit. Our best mpg was a little over 30 mpg, with a V-6 AWD! Living in northern Michigan it was incredible in the snow. At 233,000 miles we sold it to our daughter having the confidence that it will easily reach 300,000 miles. Part of me wishes I had kept it.... which I would have if a stellar deal on a newer vehicle hadn't come along from my in-laws. I want another one from that era with the V-6!

    I had a 3rd Gen, and I have encountered the deepest snow in a Canadian city, and I was driving with the trucks while all the cars were getting stranded. Best car i have owned, the new one is even better

    I worked at a Toyota dealer when that older generation RAV4 was in production. I used a V6 to deliver parts during a decent snow storm and was surprised by how good it was. Had good traction and that V6 was super quick. When the 4th gen came out I was really disappointed by how small it felt and how under powered it felt.

    I have a 2012 Rav4, 2.5l, 80k miles with zero issues. The fuel efficiency is the only thing I would gig it on, but even then, the ride quality is worth it.

    Andre and Nathan, This video might have been titled "Over-hyped vs Underappreciated". Putting aside the excellent Hybrid option we have today, the 3rd generation is PEAK RAV4. 🥳🥳The V6 option, the sliding second row seats with ski pass through, the 4WD lock button and the hidden cargo compartment in the back are features we should still have today. The tailgate on the third generation RAV4 opens in the same direction as a Bronco or Wrangler so I do not understand the problem.🤔 I know the V6 RAV4 won't come back but an upgrade to the 245 hp Hybrid powertrain from the Highlander would provide comparable power, tow rating and incredible fuel efficiency. In the future, please provide a full interior and exterior detail for Cole's classic V6 RAV4 if you are going to shoot a video with it. 🤩

      Toyota NA engines are pretty smooth. I'm not exactly sure where this 2.5L falls compared to their previous 4 cylinder predecessors, but I do know it's smoother than their new 2.4L Turbo found in their mid-sizers.

    For some reason the TRD rav doesn't have the on/off engine feature, and that's what the empty button is for.. In other rav models (except hybrid) they have the on/off engine button

    This was a great review and comparison, My wife currently has the 2010 rav4 v6 and its been amazing to us, but with road salt and the fact it has 240,000 miles she is ready to update. another great video by TFL, you guys are my go to. :)

    It’s popular because it looks great, it’s an efficient AWD vehicle and it’s Toyota. I have a 20 year old Lexus RX330 AWD as my beater car. I put a backup cam and Appple Car Play. It’s awesome. Not so great on gas though. 45,000 miles on it!

    I have a 2008 Limited, same blue color, and I love it. Only down side is that mine is the 2.4l FWD. If I had to replace it, it would be for a v6 awd lol.

    Fully agree with you. I have a 2020 RAV4 Adventure which is very similar setup except for suspension. Does great in the snow, especially with the Vredestein tires but pretty anemic on true off-roading. Very aggressive traction control cuts power way too easily. Thank you for your review!

      You're not missing anything on the Adventure other than bump stops and red paint on the springs wrt suspension. Bump Stops and stiffer springs don't really make it a "TRD OffRoad" class Toyota. The both have the Torque Vectoring AWD system (with mechanical clutches) which is the main thing.
      The Subaru CrossTrek Wilderness will run circles around this Rav4 TRD OffRoad in the snow. There's a comparison video on UA-cam about this (in Washington State) where the TRD OffRoad AWD system over heated multiple times going up an offroad snow trail that the 2024 CrossTrek Wilderness had plowed for it 4 times (up/down, and back up/down a second time) ahead of time.

    I have the 3rd Gen RAV4 V6 AWD and I just love it. Mine is the same color as the one in the video but mine is a Base version with 3rd row seats. I prefer the Base over the Sport in the video because the Base comes with an actual full size spare and the Sport doesn't even come with a spare. This is important for use because we go on long road trips. As for the side opening tailgate, I actually prefer that over the lift up tailgate mainly because on long road trips I use a roof top box that opens in the rear. So with the rear tailgate swung out of the way I can step up in the rear and access the box very easily. I can't do this with a lift up tailgate. This is why when I replace it I will get a GX-460 with its side opening tailgate. I've only used the 3rd row seats a couple of times and with only kids in the back so it works out well. It was my wife's daily driver and when she got another car I just couldn't get rid of it so we have it as a spare car used only for road trips. We got around 200,000 miles on it so far and it is still running strong. With 3 people and loaded up with enough luggage for a week-long vacation without the roof top box I average 26-28 MPG with 90% highway driving. With the box it drops down to 25 MPG. I'm trying to keep it for as long as I can.

    I hope Toyota will put the 2.4 turbocharged engine in the next RAV4 for a bit more power. I'm suspecting that Toyota may go 100% hybrid for the next RAV4, since they've done that with the Camry.

      I’d say you are right. The 2.4t will never end up in the RAV4. It burns too much gas. The next RAV4 will come for the 26 model year. The hybrid will be more powerful and standard. A plug in hybrid will be available with longer range and more power.

      The RAV4 will be 100% Hybrid. If they upgrade to the 245 hp Hybrid system seen in the Highlander, it will be as fast as the turbo and offer 40+ mpg.

    Actually having an on and off switch for the wireless charger can be helpful as some phones are prone to overheating on wireless charging so it’s a potentially useful solution.

    Had a 2010 which I sold to my daughter for $3000 less than its real value because she needed a vehicle quick for work and I ordered Jeep.What a mistake.Never got that mileage Nathan stated and not that great in snow but no problems with it.Hated that swinging door in back.

    You’re gonna have to pry my 2010 V6 out of my cold, dead hands! Seriously it’s been awesome. I know I need to replace it someday but I’m not looking forward to it. But I think I have a few years left. It’s been surprisingly roomy on long trips with my family of four. It just cruises down the highway. And it still got plenty of get up at the stoplight and passing, at 185,000 miles. When that torque kicks in - see you! And I’ve done towing with it. 3500 pounds. When I do replace it, I’ll probably get an 8 to 10-year-old Highlander, that has the same powertrain.

    I picked up a 2020 RAV4 Off Road last month. Honestly, for what I plan to use it for - commuting, longer distance driving, and hitting light trails to some kayaking destinations in and around Puget Sound - it’s perfect. I think the impression that it’s supposed to be made for harsher conditions is blown out of proportion.
    A serious rock crawler or Baja rig it is not. My 2011 Tacoma TRD Off Road will continue to be my go-to when I need more rugged capabilities.
    The only complaint I have with the TRD Off Road is that Toyota missed by not pairing the hybrid engine with the eight speed transmission for better low-end torque and acceleration, and adding at least one more inch of ground clearance. Overall it’s a decent everyday vehicle.

    Hello guys, I have a ‘22 AWD version of the Rav4 in LE variant (gas) and we’ve tested the Trail,Limited,Adventure,TRD Pro against it. We’ve noticed that the variants above the XLE that has the torque vectoring system has great on-road handling. However, if we test the LE/XLE AWD (non-torque vectoring) vs the Trail/Limited (torque vectoring) in off road with snow, it seems that the LE/XLE AWD system performs better and quicker than the ones found on the higher variants. What is also interesting is we suspect that on heavy loads, the multi-plate clutch on the toque vectoring system overheats and cuts power prematurely. The 18” TRD wheels doesn’t help either as they feel stiff on off road while the 17” wheels found on the lesser models are much more compliant of comfortable off road. Hoping you guys can test the two (2) different kinds of AWD system of the gasoline Rav4s.
    Btw, that blank switch on the lower right side of the climate control is a button to enable/disable the auto start stop function on the lower trims such as the LE/XLE gas models.

    The blank button is for the engine auto-start/stop button if the car has it. Also there is a 360 camera option.

    We have a 2013 RAV4 with the 2.5 4 cylinder we purchased used and now has 227,000 miles, runs and drives good although it does consume a decent amount of motor oil, fill the oil check the gas!

    The other advantage of the third generation RAV4 is you could get a third row. Yes, it was tight. But in a pinch you could fit the neighbors kids back there - and still probably burn the car next to you at a stoplight. And those cars had very few major problems.

      We have a 2019 RAV4 Limited Hybrid. Highly recommend it. Skip the gas only model, hybrid is so much smoother, more power, better fuel economy.

    Sounds insane but i lifted my rav4 awd, installed bf’s trail terrains and have gone to where it definitely it wasn’t meant to go, awesome little cars.

    We currently own a 2015 RAV4, and it is, by a very far margin, the best vehicle we have ever owned! It is quick with the 2.5L four, it has all wheel drive and is great in snow, rain, on a dirt road. I don’t think they are great off road vehicles, but that’s not what they were intended for! They are ultra safe, family haulers that just run and run and run! We loaded ours up, added a car top carrier and drove it across country last year, and even with the topper, averaged 32 mpg! When we replace it we’ll probably go with the hybrid version and jump up to 40 mpg!

    Interesting that all the times I have watched Tommy review the TRD version of the Rav4, he never overly bashed the fact that its labeling is pointless badging that does not warrant the right to say TRD Off Road. The Rav4 might be the #1 selling product from Toyota, but is it really the #1 selling vehicle in the USA? 🤔 Some would say the Subaru that is cross shopped with this thing is a better choice if you want to go off the pavement. And while I don't support Subarus(good products but not my thing)I have recently watched this "TRD" Rav4 go head to head with its rival in the Subaru category in the snow up a mountainous off road course. And it failed to even follow the tracks of the Subaru. In fact, the Subaru created and plowed the road for the Rav4 and it could not cope with the conditions. Regardless. I would take a Rav4 over a Subaru, but I would not take the "TRD". I would buy the hybrid version and put on tires that would be appropriate for the terrain I run on and call it a done deal.

    Thr missing button is the auto stop/shut off for the motor. I would be curious to see where that was put. My wife has a 23 RAV4 XLE Premium AWD and I would say for the price difference it would it is the sweet spot.

    My wifes RAV 4 needs a new water pump. Needed a new condenser a few years ago. So in 8 years, two items that failed. The water pump has a small leak which will probably get worse. The rest has been maintenance. Overall it is a very nice vehicle to drive. The 2.5 litre has plenty of pep.

    These RAV4s are just amazing... The NEWEST car that's blown me away is its twin: the Corolla Cross mini CUV. Very similar in layout and size, but Corolla Cross is smaller. Love these Toyotas with the exception of the Tacoma with the 4 pot under the hood.

    The EPA numbers, you quoted, are incorrect, Nathan. At least for the V6. Those are the ratings of the 4-cylinder equipped RAV4. The V6 is rated at 19/26 (21 combined).

    I have a 2011 RAV4 limited with 180k miles and I still like it better than the new RAV4. I would buy another 2011 over a modern RAV4.

    My only complaint about my 2012 V6 RAV4, doing spark plugs and water pump is a pain in the ass 😂

    Maybe Toyota should have badged it as a TRD “ Prerunner” version kinda like the 2wd version of the TRD Tacos? That way when they find out that the public really wants a little bit more, which c’mon, if it’s really the number one vehicle outside of I’m guessing the F-150 lineup, everyone buying one will want to be “Keeping up with the Jones’” which is code for “oh yeah, that’s a really cool feature. Mine’s got that too. But just look what the newest model can do that yours can’t”! I mean, you can always slap a “Pro” sticker on underneath the “TRD” moniker but that’s just one trim level higher and if it’s really that far off of the stupid Ford Bronco Sport Badlands edition which didn’t Nathan say that they were roughly the same price, shouldn’t they have a couple of steps left, maybe something like ride height adjustability to raise the approach and departure angles, maybe a lower first gear to make up for the lower power and lack of a transfer case? A turbocharger with a light power boost but can make really loud whistling sounds outside and a good fake boost of the, well, boost noises for those inside when you switch drive modes into sport? And who can forget about what everybody wants on their TRD’s but Toyota’s legal team I guess decided they would do to keep from replacing anymore engines when dummies thought they could drive them into the ocean as long as the top of their “Desert Air Intake” was protruding out the top of the water (thinly veiled snorkels will give people the “confidence” better known as stupidity to do things with their brand new family vehicles). Slap a “Desert Air Intake” on the top of the TRD lineup and you’ll be saying bye bye to the F-150 lineup for the top, top, tippity top spot of most popular vehicle in the world sold by a healthy margin. I find it hard to believe this little SUV gets that big of sales each year. Must a lot more sold in the snowier parts of the country because all though I do see them here, in Houston, TX this is truck country first and foremost. Anywho, that’s my ten cents. Do what you will with it. Let me know what you might think of my “Prerunner” idea. Can they back this trim down from the TRD top of the line to the lower tier for the next model year? I think they can as long as they do a major press thing where they bring out all, and I mean ALL of the most well known automotive press and bringing them out (paying for the entire thing, swanky hotels all. Gotta pull out all stops to get Diamond Jim on your side right?) for a weekend and showcasing at least one more higher level if not two but hold back on at least one more major upgrade in trim levels about two years down the road. Yup. Sorry, I gotta take a phone call. Who’s this from? Now who do I know that works in the Toyota sales hiring department?😂

    I had a 11 RAV4 Limited 4WD with the 268hp 3.5 V6.
    It was an Awesome Car.
    In 22, I was going to buy a new RAV4 Limited AWD hybrid but the fit and finish, ride quality, road and engine noise, comfort and exterior visibility was SUBPAR.
    I didn’t like it at all.
    So I bought a used Subaru Forester Touring to hold me over for the redesigned 25 RAV4. I’ll wait until the 26 year model comes out to get the bugs worked out and if it’s as good as my 11 RAV4, then I’ll buy it.

    I always wonder where they sell the most of a certain vehicle. We are in Arizona and all I see it Highlanders but very few RAV4.

      @@Inferno45 no we definitely are crossover king here but I think we sell more off-roaders because we have so many mountains and vast areas to explore. I think we have more highlinders here because it’s Minivan substitute.

    I found the V6 and 5 spd got the same mpg as the 4 cylinder 4spd got. The V6 got about 100 more hp. And the cargo just was enough for rhe wheelchair I sometimes carry. I'll not get the new Rav because of the lack of room for the chair. All great cars. But the 3rd gen Rav was more useful, esp with a center diff lockup. I'd now consider any 2011 and newer V6 highlander instead.

    you said the rav4 is closer in size to the compass and the cherokee is bigger i disagree,it closet in size to the forester,crv,tuson,etc.before i bought my 2020 rav4,i looked at the cherokee,i have more cargo area,head room,leg room etc,compass alot smaller,

    I do have a 2020 Honda CR-V, non hybrid which I love, but I still respect the RAV4, especially the Hybrid and Prime model. When comparing to the RAV4, the RAV4 hybrid is more fuel efficient than the CR-V Hybrid, and I do wish Honda will offer a Trailsport package for the CR-V like they do for the Pilot, Passport, and Ridgeline to complete with the RAV4 TRD and Subaru Forrester Wilderness for slightly more off road capability, though Honda may offer a CR-V Trailsport later on down the line. I did chose the CR-V over the RAV4 because the CR-V has more cargo room and in my opinion, the CR-V is a little more fun to drive. But with the 2025 RAV4 coming soon, I may switch over depending on what it has to offer.

    The v6 one is pretty awesome but the 3 cubic feet lost of cargo isn’t really consequential if you ask me. On top of that, the rear seat room is better and the entire car is smoother and safer all around. Also the hybrid just makes the new model several orders of magnitude better than the old one.

      Let's hope safety has been upgraded over the course of two model generations. While I agree today's RAV4 Hybrid is a very impressive accomplishment, the model featured today is a non-Hybrid. If Toyota would offer the 245 Hybrid powertrain from the Highlander in the RAV4, it would match the performance and capability of the old V6 while still providing outstanding mpg.

      When Car & Driver tested the V6 RAV4 against its 4 cylinder competitors, it still achieved the second best highway mpg while adding 100 hp of extra capability.

    We have owned two Rav4's... the V6 version we had was solid, but it was not very fuel efficient and rode like a truck, but Toyota dependability was solid. I really like the new Rav4 Prime version, but at $50k+, that is way out of line in my opinion...A Tesla model 3 and, or Y can be had for less or just over that.

    My mom had the older 06 RAV4 Sport. She bought it brand new and religiously followed the maintenance schedule and only took it to her local Toyota dealership. She drove it very carefully, all highway miles. It had constant rear suspension recalls that Toyota could not fix and the transmission failed at 90,000 mi and then the engine died at 109,000, mi. Worst car she ever had. The Toyota dealership literally told her that she should upgrade to the Highlander because it is much more reliable. She switched back to the Honda CR-V. Past Corolla's and Camry she owned were very reliable.

    Interesting - I prefer cd players vs the new tech center screens. I wont buy a vehicle with the new tech and all the start stop, cylinder deactivation, blind spot, apple play crap! I have owned 45 total vehicles & 5 new vehicles in the 38 years of driving and that stopped in 2009 because of all the tech. Toyota has always made a great product and the Rav4 is no exception. A friend of mine had a v6 like the 1 shown in this video - it was fun to drive!

      the advantage of 2014 or so and up is most allow usb mp3 playback. I have a 64gb flash drive loaded up with music in my 2015 Honda Fit. Never skips and is quick to forward to a different song. My first car cd player was a sony es back in 1989 and I loved it, mp3 is just better.

      I guess it depends on a persons music library format they prefer to use. I grew up in the 70's-80's so cassette n cd is my go to. Being I have many cd's I prefer to listen that way. My 1st car was a 67 RS Camaro Convt. in 87 with a am/fm radio. I updated it to a sony cd player and that was fantastic. At home - we have cd's n vinyl.@@batsonelectronics

      Toyota is not infallible. They are reliable and solid, yes. But as a company, Toyota is slow to move and does not provide nearly as much value for money as other brands in the segment. In a world where cars are leased and traded more often, the solidity of a Toyota is not only lost on many consumers, but becomes a burden to pricing in a competitive segment.

    Toyota is a legend for sure. However that said the Tesla Model Y will pass the Rav4 in sales in the U.S. in 2024. The Model Y is already the best selling vehicle in the world in 2023 ahead of both the Rav4 and Corolla. Who would have predicted that?
