In this video, I'm trying out another project from the 2016 Utah Woodturning Symposium. Again, I credit Linda Ferber.
These are thin wood disks with decorations like buttons turned on the face. To turn these buttons, I used a very cheap, easily made chuck to fit my usual chuck. The chuck tilts the turning axis away from parallel. This gives the turning a unique look.
I turned a chunk of cedar round with dove tail tenons on both ends. Then at a chop saw, I clamped the wood to the saw and sawed a 20 degree cut. Then adjusted the cut to 10 degrees and trimmed the wood a little more. This yielded two chucks that I'll call skew axis chucks. I used hot melt glue to mount wood disks to the chucks although I recommend double stick tape.
The brooch is turned first as a cylinder then about one quarter inch is parted off after cleaning up what will become the back side. Then the disk is flipped over and fastened back onto the cylinder it just came from. This mount enable the face to be trimmed and sanded. Then the disk is mounted yet again to one of the skew axis chucks in any desired offset from center. A button can then be very carefully cut and sanded. On some brooches, I offset the disk up to three times for different decorations.
Most brooches were apple wood. One was from a multi-wood blank from a previous project. Each was finished with shellac and buffed.
Afterwards, I glued on a finding from Fire Mountain Gems that allows the brooch to be either a necklace brooch or a pin.

"High potential for STUNNING spiral catch" Alan, I also enjoy the manner with which you turn a phrase.
God's blessings on your family!
that just slipped out :)
Thank you Torvig

Great idea Alan. Thanks for sharing the process. It's nice to see another generation of turners, it's rewarding for teacher and student.
She'll be doing more turning. Just has to find the time with her family responsibilities.:)
Thank you
Alan
Alan, what a brilliant shop made chuck! When I saw the caption "Infinite Axis Chuck" I was expecting some bright shiny thing worth hundreds. My shop will soon have a similar one. Really like the brooch too! Many thanks, Gord
Best of all, you can have two chuck for nearly the price of one. The PVC is double ended. :)
Alan
Alan you've created some terrific how-tos with great photo and narrative work. Thanks and I can't wait to try this myself. And by-the-way I totally concur that the DS tape work
Oops, got cut off before I could say I've found the DS tape does indeed hold better than the HM glue, specially when you cannot use tail-stock for reinforcement.
It would be good to do a direct controlled test.
Hmm
Alan
Another great video Alan. I'm making some pendants now for Christmas and the skewed turning will be a good addition to my projects.
Perfect.
Alan
Beautiful video, Alan.
The pendants, brooches look fabulous.
The idea with the two (20 ° and 10 °) tool is a good idea.
Yes, I immediately liked the idea of the chucks
Thank you Gunter
Alan
Very effective process Alan, and a beautiful result.
take care
Mike
Thank you Mike. Good turning to you.
Alan
That's very clever! Actually, the one that you're considering for the firewood pile is my favorite! I like that you cut all the way through! It's looks neat!
That one grew on me. Another time, I may laminate a couple of woods together and make it deliberate. :)
Thank you
Alan
Thank you for showing me this process.
Beautiful result.
Take care,
doolas
You are welcome doolas
Alan
Very nice Alan.
Thank you Donald
Alan
Saw Linda's presentation at Totally Turning a couple of months ago. Goog Stuff!
Make nice broaches or necklaces, but also work very well as zipper pulls for sweaters/jackets
Glad you saw her demo in person. Great ideas.
Thank you
Alan Stratton
Very nice! I love turning apple, such great colour.
It is nice wood as long as shrinkage is in bounds.
Alan
You have launched many new ideas with this video...
Hopefully the inspiration spreads and sparks yet more new ideas from other woodturners.
Alan
Those are neat. I would take that one with the hole in it and put some clear packing tape on the back and then fill the hole with either colored or clear resin with an inclusion. :) - Heidi
Why not - another great possibility
Thank you
Alan
They look good Alan. Desmond
Thank you Desmond
Alan
Had to watch your demo a second time but I think I've got it figured out.
Great - give it a try. :)
Thank you
Alan
Nice project Alan and explained very well!! Rich
Thank you Rich
Alan
Interesting demo you did. I think it could have a few other applications. Thanks
Ken
Yes - I think it could be use many ways.
Thank you
Alan Stratton
Excellent Alan! Nice project! Cheers! Daniel
Thank you Daniel
Alan
Good project, Alan!
Thank you Rick
Alan
Very simple but very effective
Agree - next video, I'll up the ante a bit. :)
Alan
Love the idea, this would make great buttons for knitted sweaters, just add some holes for sewing them on.
Yes a great combination. You may want to check my videos back in April 2013 making buttons. Those videos focused on getting the holes correct in the disk. This is decoration - Time to put them together?
Alan
Interesting technique! I'll have to give it a try. It looks like it would also work for making inserts for inlayed box tops.
Question: Why is double-sided tape vastly superior to hot melt glue? Used properly (right kind of glue stick, heated to the right temperature, etc.), hot melt glue provides a strong hold and can be quickly released with just a dab of rubbing alcohol. I don't think its used enough be woodturners.
Hot melt did glue securely. The problem was timing to get it to the correct temperature; Thicker glue when slightly cooler; difficulty in removing. spider web like strings...
Yes, it was strong enough - that was not the issue. I use hot melt in other woodturning situations.
But, I definitely prefer double stick tape here. Sounds like you'll prefer hot melt - that's okay too. :)
Thank you
Alan
Good project.
Thank you John
Alan
Beautiful, Alan, I'll try... Cheers. Mauro
Absolutely - you'll do well. :)
Alan
Hi Alan,
Another really good video.
I've been trying to make pendants for my Wife and Daughters, I also used the hot glue but it causes the CA finish to flake! The pendants have a curved front and back, would I still be able to use the angled jig approach?
Thanks Alan for sharing such an interesting video.
Thumbs up all day from me 👍👍👍👍👍.
Take care.
Cheers

Hmmm.. In general, I'd have to say that you need a flat back to use a flat topped jig. But let's be creative and experiment.
My guess is the heat of hot melt glue is the problem with hot melt glue. Would a couple of layers of tape insulate the CA on the wood from the hot melt heat?
could you use a small turned holder to hold your pendant so that the rim of pendant is solidly held in a recess in the holder. Then the holder is fastened to the chuck. sort of an intermediate jam chuck?
May be other solutions also - time to experiment.
Alan
+As Wood Turns Oh I never thought about insulating, I'll be giving that a go for definitely.
Thanks for your help and advice Alan it's very much appreciated. 👍
Very interesting The Apple wood looks nice as it dries does it crack and check bad?
Apple is not known as a stable wood so there is a very real chance that it will crack or check.
We'll see what additional character evolves. :)
Ala
Nice!
Thank you
Alan
What a great idea. I am on it. Have you tried the micro owen tecnik (sorry, bad english) to dry the wood. I have never had the currich (bad english again) to do it.
regards Júlíus
Yes, I have microwaved wood to dry it but I don't like doing it. I used the over outside in case it caught on fire. Then had frequent trips to check and reset. So give it a try outside on very low power if you want.
Alan
Thank you Alan, I will take care.
Great idea! In case you want to wear one just tell people it is a pendant not a neckless!
yes good idea - with different hardware, could be a bolo tie. :)
Thank you
Alan
Very nice Alan. Can tell us where you obtained the combination finding? I haven't seen that before.
The combo finding came from Fire Mountain Gems.
Thank you Alex
Alan
Love the video, I just got everything put together to do these. Where did you get the hardware? I can't seem to find them. Thank you!
Try Fire Mountain Gems.
