From then on dozens of a aspiring musicians emerged from acts like Marty Wilde, Joe Brown to the Beatles, The Animals, The Stones and beyond. Thank you Lonnie, you set the ball rolling and music changed forever and today anyone with real talent can emerge to greatness. We have a lot to thank him for. Prior to him we listened to music which we had no say in and had what we were given.

When I saw him, probably the very end of the 50's it was in a big and very full theatre. Mind you, the atmosphere there, good though it was, wasna a patch on the atmosphere in the pub here. It's fabulous.
His chewing gum never lost its flavour on the bed time overnight, it changed flavor all the time and it also blew up not only in the UK but across the entire world... I really wonder what was in that chewing gum and how it could grow so much the whole world seemed to fit inside of that chewing bubble gum.... 🤪
Lonnie predates Presley. He had his first single out, 'Rock Island Line' recorded in July 1954 which went gold in the UK. It peaked at No. 8 in the USA. Elvis was a Truck driver starting in on April 20th 1954. But by July 1954 his clowning at Sun records got Elvis noticed and by the 7th July he's on the radio causing listeners to phone in to find out who it was. He was aged 19.5 the next day on the eighth. Lonnie was 23 that April '54.
when this first aired my dad put the 1st vhs tape he could find in the machine to record the program trouble was it was our family Christmas 81!!!!! oh dear but at least we had Chas & Dave with Lonnie plus Eric Clapton later in the show doing a turn , like they say they dont makeum like this anymore
As Pete 'Kiwi' keegan I met Dickie Bishop who played with Lonnie. We had a 'skiffle group' that appeared on BBCTV in 1957. We often 'busked' aroud Leicester square playing to the cinema queqes! Post war you only needed a guitar ( £5-£16) a tea chest bass, washboard & you were away! Its was simple, rythmic & easy to find th funds! There were no 'smart phones', 'social media' e.t.c We were happy and enjoyed our youths!
I had to wait till 1976 to see Lonnie, at the Liverpool Empire, like he`d never been away. Someone in the audience shouted out, " LONNIE DONEGAN ! " It swayed him a bit. Also on the bill was, Joe { Mr Piano Henderson. } Another great entertainer.
I took my youngest boy to the tribute to Lonnie gig at the Albert Hall. Saw Chaz and Dave, they rocked hard. I am an old Punk and Metal boy but that night saw many legends who were influenced by Lonnie and in turn set off younger bands. Had tickets for right above the stage door and got a wave from top British talent. Cheers

I had the privilage to meet Lonnie Donegon in Bristol when he was being interviewed by the "Late Great" Trevor Fry, one of the most talented radio presenters the Beeb ever had. Lonnie was so personable and a real gentleman, with an incredible sense of humour.... I'll never forget that few minutes in my life....

Unknow to me then chazzzz n Dave played a set n half way through Lonnie came on what an awesome night .Lonnie had just recovered from a heart attack he and the WAS THE BEST. 😍....🤔 Erm ....... They were good days to be growing up and Lonnie Donegan was a musical inspiration to many famous people to follow. The Beatles openly admitted being influenced by his music. As a young man in the late 1950's I frequented the Bodega in Cross Street, Deansgate, Manchester. Lonnie Donegan played Banjo there. Later I went to the Manchester Free trade Hall to see him and his Skiffle Group. Anybody remember Amiel Ford or Wee Willey Harris?
I saw Emile Ford twice in Liverpool. First time he had a little backing band, second time he was reduced to backing tapes. Shame, he just sounded like his records.
I used to buy a certain type of bubblegum (I think) which contained a picture of a singer. If you collected so many you could claim a prize. I never managed to collect more than about nine because I kept getting the ones with Wee Willy bloody Harris!

I’m Drew I’m 31 and I was introduced to Lonnie Donegan when I was still at school my favourite song that he used to preform is my old man’s a dustman.
This was when Britain really was Great, sadly it has now been lost.

I have my mothers 78 records of Lonnie. Still play them occasionally on her wind-up gramophone. He was a sound of my childhood.
