Theres so may ways to interpret this song.
Theres an old Jewish Legend that at the beginning of time God’s light was held in ten holy vessels. But the vessels couldn’t hold the light and cracked. Billions of holy sparks were scattered about the universe so humanity was created, to gather the holy sparks which have been scattered across creation and to bring them into wholeness again.
I think that’s something he references in the song.
The fact that we don’t live in a perfect universe. But we are always striving for some kind of unattainable perfect state. We’re just banging our little broken drums and doing the will of the broken universe in our imperfect way.

I bought the DVD 'Live in London' and wound up playing it every day for a year and a half. I then bought a second DVD ( lest I wear out the first one) and lent the first out to some friends to include five librarians (four of whom thought it the best music they had ever heard). I agree. And I'm a Led Zeppelin/ Pink Floyd fan. Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada (Leonard's home-R.i.P.).

Love seeing your reaction to this. It really gets me too. All the despair, and then we get one of my all time favorite choruses..."Ring the bells that still can ring, Forget your perfect offering...There's a crack, a crack...In EVERYTHING...That's how the light gets in"...Now matter how bad it may get, how utterly hopeless, there is a crack, that's how the light gets in. I don't think many are familiar with this but it has been one of my favorites since I first heard it years ago. Here is another of my favorites of his, from this same performance. It's a spoken word version of "A Thousand Kisses Deep" ua-cam.com/video/JtsP8PEjdps/v-deo.html

Thank you for such a good and personal reaction. You come across to me as a very beautiful person with love for others; so was Leonard. Leonard is a fellow Canadian that I have followed since the 70's first his books of poetry and then his music. I'm so old I only paid $8 back then for his first concert. He had such respect and love for everyone. You can see it in how he treats his band and the audience. I miss him even though he never knew me - I knew him

I was about 20 rows from the stage at this brilliant concert. I'd seen him a few months earlier on the opening night of the tour when no one knew what to expect. This was in a fairly small theatre. We'd have been happy with 45 minutes of seeing the legend, instead we got nearly 3 hours of classic after classic. Shortly after the tour transferred to big arenas, which is where this was recorded. All in all, I saw him 7 times on this tour and it's still a highlight to remember.
Anything and everything from 'Live in London' is spell binding.

Thanks for the entertaining reaction. To add context, the extended ending of the song was so he could mention each member of the band before the mid-concert intermission. After being retired for some years, Cohen went back on tour again at age 74 in 2008, that tour lasted through the end of 2010 (when we saw him for the first time). Then he recorded a new album, toured again in 2012-2013, and recorded two more albums, the last one just before his death in 2016. Wish we could have seen him earlier in his career, but are thankful we got to see him when he un-retired. His concerts were almost like religious experiences, and long--usually approaching 3 hours. You might like to react to "Steer Your Way" from his last album, "You Want it Darker."
