- In this video, we dive into the current state of the horror genre, exploring both its strengths and weaknesses. I sit down with Benjamin to discuss what modern horror films are doing right, and what aspects may be holding the genre back. From the rise of elevated horror with filmmakers like Jordan Peele to the success of legacy sequels like Halloween 2018 and Scream 5, horror seems to be in a creative renaissance. We also touch on the diversity of horror styles today, from indie hits like Long Legs to the unique flair of A24 productions. But what’s the one thing Benjamin hates about horror? You might be surprised to find out! Plus, we discuss what needs to happen for the genre to stay fresh moving forward. Don't miss this in-depth conversation about the evolving world of horror!

What a great time to be a horror fan right now. Alien Romulus, Abigail, The Substance, Longlegs, and MaXXXine are all in my top 10 movies of the year so far.
I would love to see more horror film like Barbarian, one of the best & most batshit movie I’ve seen in this decade so far.
I genuinely cannot wait for Nosferatu, Eggers has been on a ridiculously good run.
This is a great answer. Couldn’t agree more.
This might be a contraversal opinion but I think the 2020s is my 2nd favorite decade for horror right now (unless we get nothing but crappy horror in the next few years) I mean we got movies like The Black Phone, Nope, Barbarian, M3GAN, Talk to Me, Saw X, Longlegs, Abigail, Thanksgiving, Alien: Romulus, the X trilogy, the list goes on and on
@@TheNumbersGuy-bm6bt 2022 was such a gift for horror fans.
Here are 10 Modern Horror Movies (2010-Present) that I believe best represent the genre right now:
1. The Witch
2. Hereditary
3. Overlord
4. The Lighthouse
5. Get Out
6. Green Room
7. The Babadook
8. It Follows
9. The Black Phone
10. It (2017)
I love alot of modern horror movies
Don't put 80s in a slasher box. There were massive types of horror in the 80s: Lost Boys, Poltergeist, The Thing, Hellraiser, Cujo, etc. Etc.
Yes! The shining, The fog, etc
Not a "hate", but monster movies and creature-features are a little lacking, lately. The only recent ones of quality that I can think of are Alien: Romulus, Godzilla Minus 1, Predator (with Prey) and IT - and all of those are re-works of very dated intellectual properties.
The next horror movies to become a big hit:
1. Scream 7
2. Five Nights at Freddy's 2
3. Terrifier 3
4. Notstifstue
Scream 7 is in shambles
Not really. Not as much as you might think
Im sorry most modern horror movies suck these days.
Most modern films suck these days regardless of the genre. However i think that IT chapter 1 and 2 were good films, even though chapter 2 was clearly less good than chapter 1. I also like Smile and US
So far this decade we got Aliens Slashers Creature features Cults Witches Zombies Satan Ghost Vampires Werewolf's possession Action Comedy
You have a point in 50s and 60s it was Giant Bugs/Creatures 70s it was cults and Satan 80s Slashers 90s Teen Horror 2000s torture And Zombies and 2010s Ghost and supernatural
Blumhouse is always a gamble, but I actually really enjoyed AfrAId. It wasn't scary, but it was fun, humorous, and had some interesting turns and reveals.
I completely agree. We have directors like Robert Eggers and Ari Aster doing really fresh, crazy elevated horror. Also Jordan Peele and Mike Flanagan both having huge success the past few years. Plus the studios like A24, blumhouse, NEON, etc. No matter if you love all horror or just certain sub genres there's something for everyone
I don't enjoy modern gory horror movies, nowadays most scary movies are really bloody, my fave modern ones are Alien Romulus, The watchers (Ishana Shyamalan) Black phone, A quiet place, Five nights at Freddys, Megan, Get Out / Us, Insidious sequels, Doctor sleep, etc. But old horror movies were top and not too gory. Even old Nightmare on elm street, Friday the 13th, The texas chainsaw massacre, The shining were tamer. There is a step/grade when they go to I love/like this movie to become this is too much 4 me
I really despise the term “elevated horror”. Get Out is a horror movie and so is Evil Dead Rise.
This is an interesting video to see months after Cody's panel with you and Joey at Megacon earlier this year.
What I love about the horror genre is there’s an enormous playground for stories to be told. From haunted houses to sci-fi to werewolves to comedy, there aren’t any limitations on what horror films be made. And right now, there’s not the definitive horror subgenre. Just in the last year, we’ve gotten several possession stories, body horror in The Substance, a surprisingly solid Omen prequel, the return of Saw, multiple spider horror movies, and a Mickey Mouse horror film that’s apparently absolute trash. I think the horror genre is currently in a strong place because we’re still able to unpack quality horror stories, which other parts of Hollywood is struggling with.
Horror seems to be somewhat shredding the stigma that had developed around the genre, where people outside of the core horror community are checking out things within the genre. It's nice to see
Classic horror is superior.
Please someone ask him a question about Nazis 😂
That's what I love most about horror, all the subgenres
James Wan is modern horror
People are wrong Afaird was a fantastic movie and a unique one
I haven’t seen Speak No Evil yet but, I want to as I love James McAvoy in charming psychopath roles like that but, that one I figured I would have to wait and maybe catch on Peacock since I know most Blumhouse flicks go their when they do come to streaming.
Yeah Blumhouse is distributed by universal which is connected to peacock
I see what you are saying about there being lots of different types of genres. But in my opinion there is almost zero horror movies from the last 15 years that I would consider all time great. Like if I were to make a list of the top 25 horror movies ever, probably like 23 of them would be from before 2000. There is nothing coming out nowadays on the level of the original Halloween, Alien, The Thing, Nightmare of Elm Street, Dawn of the Dead, The Exorcist, etc. And I think Sean is massively understating the variety of old horror.
And all of the different sub genres of horror’s best movies are old.
Silence of the Lambs and the Shining are better Psychological horror than anything from the last 15 years. Dawn of the Dead (78) is the best zombie movie. Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream are the best slashers. The Exorcist is the best possession movie. The Fly is the beat for body horror. Old horror absolutely destroys new
So much of what comes out now is just pretty forgettable quickly and a lot of these new horror movies are obsessed with being weird just to be weird
@@Jbuckets23 If the modern horror movies are wanting to be weird like Barbarian or The Substance, that’s a good thing imo. It means that we’re getting something new and different to the genre.
I mean classic horror movies arent that great. Poltergeist, evil dead 1 and halloween are all terrible movies and the only reason people like them is cos they grew up watching them. Anyone who defends these types of movies but then shits on anyone who enjoys the fast and the furious is a hypocrite.
Would be careful who you call a hypocrite😂 halloween is not a terrible Movie, maybe its for you but for most ppl its iconic and scary✌️🤩
@@Efi2002 myers is basically a walking zombie, nothing can kill him and because of that there is no tension, its predictable and frustrating due to its logic. So when people love this movie with all of its flaws and eat it all up, they can't look down at other franchises like fast and the furious, thats all im saying. P.s. the only credit i can give it is it was the first movie that established the modern tropes we see in horror, but its aged horribly if you dont watch it with rose tinted glasses.
@@mohammadmirza84 ok thats ur opinion, I find the movie very tensful and the atmosphere is top tier. Just bcs he cant be killed doesnt mean there isnt tension
@@Efi2002 fair enough, it just made me accept the fate of the characters, and felt it was very cheap to give him that much plot armour. It made it uninteresting to me when theres no puzzle to solve
@mohammadmirza84 The original idea of Michael Myers in Halloween when it initially released was that he was human, with some kind of supernatural edge. Sequels got rid of the ambiguity of his character because he kept taking bigger and bigger beatings. You also have to factor in the historical context. Halloween released 1978, in a decade that peaked in serial killer activity with some very famous serial killer cases. I can't imagine how terrifying of a first watch that would be if you were a regular suburban citizen.
1 movie is called a standalone
2 movies is called a double feature
3 movies is called a Trilogy
4 movies is the start of a franchise
Scream didn't become a franchise until 2011. The Dark Knight is actually The Dark Knight Franchise. There's a fourth movie, called Batman: Gotham Knight and it's animated voiced by Kevin Conroy. It takes place between the events of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. So to say two movies is a franchise is incorrect.
Cambridge Dictionary defines franchise as a series of movies that have similar titles and are about the same characters. I don't know where you got the idea that it has to have at least 4 movies from
Jordan Peele movies are trash
