Trey Gowdy Schools Professor's View on Racial Discrimination

  • Republican House Representative from South Carolina, Trey Gowdy directly challenged the assertion by professor and community policing advocate, Deborah Ramirez, that African-American victims of crime are treated differently than white victims of crime in America. This quickly sparked a fierce debate, with Gowdy's beginning his line of questioning by listing some of the “more than 340 officers killed in the line of duty in South Carolina” followed by several victims of “interracial homicides in South Carolina.”
    Gowdy was relentless in taking Ramirez to task for her assertion that poor black communities often fail to receive justice, while noting that there is a very real problem of actually getting the victims of violent crime to cooperate with police investigations - “even after a drive-by shooting of an 8-year-old at a birthday party?,” he shouted at Ramirez.
    His frustration comes as House Judiciary Committee Chairman, Bob Goodlatte says he “will not rest until we make progress”, in regards to policing and criminal justice reform. However, the Virginia Republican’s effort to build consensus has continuously devolved into partisanship - with Tuesday's hearing being the latest case. This suggests Goodlatte and reform advocates have a long way to go before they will ever find any common ground for on new policing standards or training.
    This was the first of several planned Judiciary hearings on the rising tensions between police and African-American in their local communities. Several of the most high profile cases of police brutality and abuse of power have been perpetrated against African-Americans, the most famous case of course, being that of George Floyd, occurring in the summer of 2020.
    “I want us to get to the point where we lament the murder of a black female … at the hand of her abusive husband … just as much as if it was at the hand of a white cop,” said Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor.
    Democrat Representative from Texas Sheila Jackson Lee attempted - as she does - several times to defuse tensions at various moments in the hearing, interjecting to people in the room that they “may disagree” but “we don’t heal when we take each other’s pain lightly.” She has continuously urged the panel to work together to find a solution. However, has also spent more of her time caught in the same partisan rhetoric she accuses her colleagues of displaying.
    Many of the African-American members of the panel chose to spend their allotted time seeking guidance from policing experts about what Congress should do to improve the situation, and also sharing personal stories of being stopped or harassed by police. Republicans, meanwhile, used their time to discuss the essential need for policing, imploring the public and Congress to respect community police officers and allocate them the appropriate funding they need to do their job safely and successfully.
    “I want to assure all of you that the purpose of this hearing and the ongoing efforts following this hearing is to make sure we’re doing everything possible to address the problems that have arisen in recent months to make sure communities are safer, police officers are safer and our citizens’ rights are protected,” Goodlatte said.
    Despite a measured tone by the Chair, fiery rhetoric from Milwaukee, Wisconsin County Sheriff David Clarke, stole the show. Clarke blasted federal lawmakers for getting involved in issues of policing at all, arguing they are a matter for local consideration, outside of federal authority. This is inline with the Republican's past and present support for states rights. Clarke has taken the same stance essentially, just in a more micro sense. Republicans, like Arizona conservative Trent Franks, praised Clarke for his work, with members asking him how officers are handling the political heat?
    “Let’s leave that police conduct for the public to engage in, not… the elected officials who can’t resist the opportunity to exploit the emotions of an uninformed or misinformed public simply for political gain,” Clarke said, before suggesting the root of current problems is “black underclass subculture behavior” that has little to do with police practices.
    Since the recent Baltimore riots, Goodlatte and Conyers have been working together, inviting witnesses to testify and talk about potential future next steps.

      I’m going to be honest with you man. You have every right to think and believe whatever you want. We live in a country where fortunately we can think and feel freely. When we as a nation consider the alternative to free speech we have totalitarianism. I am a conservative myself, but I encourage you to fact check even the things that conservatives say, and I encourage you to think for yourself. If there was no disagreement in this country it would be so much worse.

I have a question also to follow yours up: Why are so few people willing to admit some things simply can not be known for a fact? . Sure, you asked a rhetorical question, but not one with the purpose of making a statement of fact, just one to express your support for someone I also admire. The lack of cooperation with law enforcement in the black community is very real. I recall a murder case in Maryland that occurred on a basketball court in the middle of the day in the Summer. The victim was shot and killed in front approximately 30-40 people and NO ONE on that court/area would identify the shooter. That’s a culture problem, not a law enforcement problem!!

    It is a shame that portions of the public do not trust law enforcement or view law enforcemet personel as their adversary. Long gone are the days of the cop on the beat, someone who was from the community, had a stake in living conditions within that community, and viewed the people as his neighbors, and treated them as such.
    Ever since the beginning of our so called war on drugs, rules have been skirted, personal freedoms infringed upon, privacy invaded, personal property and hard earned cash confiscated. Otherwise good hard working people who used to like police officers, and would support their efforts have in too many cases had their lives ruined not by drugs, but by the laws that should be in place to help those with addictions deal with them in a meaningful way to the benefit of the person, his family, the community, the police,courts, etc etc etc. Instead the laws of the land would rather simply spend trillions of taxpayer dollars on persecution and prosecution which serves no one other then perhaps those engaged in for profit prisons, organized crime, and perhaps all those now simply in it for the money.
    And the true victim is none other then the party being arrested for a condition that can for much less cash and far less damage to lives be effectively treated.
    In a world with huge budget shortfalls due to falling revenue and rising law enforcement, adjudication, and incarceration costs, why no one is addressing the obscenely high costs in money, lives, and basic humanity that are continuing to mount while we the supposed example of freedom and democracy, The Land of the Free continue to jail more of its people then China or No Korea. Hardly a sound,,prudent or sane way to set an example. It is no wonder we have lost the respect of the rest of the world as we have squandered our once moral high ground as we try to legislate and imprison our way to someone's ideal of how people should behave.
    It would be so easy to return law enforcement / community relations as well as US / world relations while crippling organized crime, and and corruption that it breeds rather then simply ruining the lives of countless Americans over this victim-less crime.

      Jim Man My parents were very conservative people, and members of a group called the John Birch Society. Grandfather and his father taught at MIT and Harvard, my family from the Boston area where we have lived since 1620, blah blah blah. Growing up in a very structured environment I had piano and French at like 7 as well as mathematics, literature, and (you fill in here) being taught us kids during the times when we were not being instructed in a private school. My parents idea of recreation was reading and other educational constructive activities. This I say not to be a braggart, but to relay the kind of regimented upbringing I 'suffered'.
      Anyway, I was probably familiar with the constitution, and conservatism at a time when most my age were actually out having fun. The brilliance of parents who strictly instill these types of behaviors when a child is young was not appreciated by me until some years later in retrospect, but the net result is the overwhelming need to understand what one encounters. If unfamiliar subject matter, the uncompromising need to learn it is second nature. In all actuality it becomes like washing your hands if a obsessive compulsive.
      Imagine going through 60+ years in this manner, because something that reinforced and made habit as a small child doesn't just go away. And although my social skills suffered, my critical thinking skills became very sharp. So those who do not know me may think I am some cold unfeeling academic, but it isn't intentional , its just all I know.. In my 60s, on an air machine as a result of emphysema, I spend a lot of time, probably too much time here and google+ commenting blogging, and other writings justifying it by my not wanting all these years of learning to be buried with me, and if you and whomever are within earshot, you shall become a probably involuntary recipient.
      Your comment regarding the presumption of innocence is accurate. In too many instances the law enforcement as well as the judicial systems in this country have become so corrupt as to be a racket. I have not heard of the sex offender war, but am very familiar with the travesty known as the war on drugs. To begin with, the term itself is misleading,and I must assume was adopted in attempts to skirt constitutional issues, and simply muddy the waters of various subsequent laws and actions that congress has no constitutional authority to make law short of a constitutional amendment such as was required for prohibition and again later its repeal . Numerous constitutional assaults have been included as they build a house of cards based upon the foundation of an unconstitutional incursion. The fact that these laws have not been overturned simply makes me suspect our Supreme Court has loyalties other then doing as they pledged to do, and that as to uphold and defend the rules as laid out. They have become so corrupted as to simply become a Supreme legislature with no rules to limit their.discretion, nor a constituency to toss them out when they ignore the law.
      Our entire system of representative government has been corrupted to a point that I fear does not bode well for the countries future. But those doing the corrupting have had exactly this in mind since the days of their first invasion of the US banking system, and now 100 +/- years later they have nearly completely ransacked the country and have become so proficient in the art of evil, most Americans can simply not comprehend anything that dark.
      I urge you to check out the John Birch Society's videos as ell as their websites. You'll find everything happening today was predicted years back, but people didn't hear very well then either.
      Best Regards

    • @CameronKerrBocher
      @CameronKerrBocher 9 років тому

      Jim Man As it is in most cases, when a segment of society is targeted for whatever reason, it begins as being represented to mitigate effects stemming from the most extreme activities of a few people in some subset of the segment of the population of the targeted group. The proposed action they push although quite often unconstitutional receives little objection as in the exampled extreme cases it is felt the benefits justify the infringement. Once the legislation is drafted though, it is often so vague and ambiguous so as to allow what is perceived as a small crack in constitutional protection to be expanded into a gaping indiscriminant persecution and victimization of a vastly larger segment of the population. As soon as it is legislated and written into law, you will find prosecutors pushing the vague terminology to an ever expanding limit. Eventually the small incursion into civil liberty becomes large enough to drive a truck through and any attempts to reign it in result in character assassination or being called soft on crime. What you speak of in sex crimes is very apparent, and while most welcome keeping kids safe from these predators, most never intended that a couple teenagers a couple years apart engaging in sexual activity could result in one of them being permanently targeted and his/her life being ruined in a clear misapplication of the law.
      I assume this is your primary concern, and it is a legitimate one.
      These types of abuses of the spirit of the law written are found throughout the criminal justice system and is usually a result of a prosecutor unethically padding his stats with no regard for the lives ruined as a result. of it. While not condoning this in anyway, it is easy to understand dealing with criminals on a daily basis and the things they do would inevitably make one a cynic.
      .

    • @CameronKerrBocher
      @CameronKerrBocher 9 років тому

      Jim Man Unfortunately the educational system in this country has pretty much guaranteed the kids won't even remember we had a constitution. The dumbing down of these kids is criminal and follows the game plan of the United Nations not the United States.
      Seems the best a lot of us can do is to illuminate.
