I just had these for the first time last night and it was the most delicious , heavenly food ever !!! And ... along with it a tiny wild grouse. I roasted it all in a cast iron pan on the stovetop with butter and encrusted the grouse with my homegrown oregano and added the mushrooms at the end , sprinkled a little Utah Real Salt on it and felt so blessed .. oh my gosh !!!
Wow, that has got to be one of the most beautiful living things I've ever seen! Not just among the mushroom family, but any living organism. Just stunning!

This spring (2019) my son spotted a huge one up in the woods, so we went up to it.. I had never heard of chicken in the woods mushroom before, but he told me that they were suppose to be good to eat.. I picked 1/2 a plastic grocery bag full just to test. I checked the Internet first and that stuff sells for $25 / pound roughly, and suppose to taste a lot like chicken, which I'm not that fond of chicken, but it's free.. After cooking up a batch by flour batter and frying, it tastes a whole lot better than chicken does.. The next day I went out and got another 1/2 bag, but the bugs and dirt was starting to show.. I cleaned some, but left the rest in the bag in the refiig. and used it as I got to it. After about 2-3 weeks of eating, I noticed over that time period the mushroom taste was starting to decline from when it was fresh, but still edible.. Anyway, before we could eat it all, it started getting to the point that I had to throw some of it away, but we enjoyed it while we could.. The one he found was probably 4 to 5 feet across on a very large oak that had got blown over a few years back.. Later I did cut a lot of wood off the tree, but I had left about 3 to 4 feet that was connected to the root system that was sticking up out of the ground... I'm hoping that it will come back this coming spring...
I had one of these growing in my yard, also in central Minnesota. I'm not trained at all in identifying mushrooms so I just got rid of it, but after doing research I'm pretty confident it was chicken of the woods. Shame because it was a really big one too. Growing on the stump of my oak tree.
I've never had those types of mushrooms before but I heard any local restaurant that deals with specialty cuisines will pay top dollar for beautiful specimens like that.
I pan fried this mushroom with onions, tomatoes and habanero slices, oh lord! It was FIREEEE!!! I wouldn't share that mushrooms with nobody, i'd eat it all by my selfish self!!
ive found lots of chicken of the woods beautiful yellow with red on hwy 101 south of florence oregon around milepost 200 on the east side about a half mile back into the old growth. pretty sure i found it growing on a nearly 100 year old logging stump of what could only be cedar or pine of some kind, defenatly not on an oak or any kind of deciduous tree or hardwood. maybe the tree was just so old that i didnt matter
I saw those for the first time when I was hiking the Appalachian Trail a few years ago. Eventually I ran into some hikers who knew what they were and they would cook them up with dinner, I was too chicken and stuck to my ramen noodles. It's cool to see someone get that excited about them, I had a feeling they were a special sight, maybe next time I'll try some.

I like to find Laetiporus sp. when it is younger than this, since it is more tender the younger it is. Once the edges begin to get wavy the texture begins to toughen. This was a beautiful find. I have seen patches that were ten times as abundant, but that's rare.

+330 MaNiaC people think salmon is always pink but it's krill eating krill that makes salmon pink, is it tannins in wood that give that color to the shroomies ? Or there no matter what, I heard oak is their favorite and oaks super high in tannins coincidence?
Hi, hope you don’t mind but I have another question. I was out looking for these beauties this morning, didn’t find any but I did see a bunch of felled trees with white fungus, very small like someone spray painted the log, can that be the mycelium of chickens early stages? Thank you, Michael.
